I have a 1999 base Deville and was told by 2 stereo installers that I needed the GMRC03 harness. I had 3 others tell me no so I had them (CarToys) install my Alpine deck and Sirius tuner without it. It went fine and sounded good until the day after.

I go out to my car and hit my remote unlock on my keychain and nothing happens. I try all the buttons and still nothing happens. I open the door and no interior lights, no flashing security light on the dash, seems like a dead battery. So I insert the key and it starts fine and everything works. The problem is it reset all by data on the dash to zero. Like the miles driven, fuel used, trip odometer. and fuel left in the tank. Is this a known problem with not using the GMRC03 harness?

This problem only happens about every 2 days.

They used a standard wiring harness and ran a continous 12v feed from the steering column.

Before I spend the money on this is this a problem that other people have had in the past? I want to be sure. I am not one to throw money at a problem until it works.

The problem with that is GM has alot of the electrics running through the HU wiring. Not using an interface leaves some of these electrics opened. When installing a HU in a GM car (and maybe all OEMs nowadays) you must take this into account. The only way to do it, is to leave the factory HU wired and relocated, and completely run new wires for the new HU. Or find a good interface. I used a GMOS-06 and all of my electrics work, kind of. But I have no major issues anyhow.

Calm dowm man. I have zero problems paying whatever is nessesary for my car. I did not buy a Daewoo. I just want to make sure I am getting my money's worth. The reason I have money to invest in my car is that I don't waste time and money on things I may or may not need. I do the research and then make an informed decision. If there were more posts about this issue that were detailed enough for me to make a decision on then we would not be chatting right now. I am looking for what other people have experianced in doing this install. I get what you are saying and I appriciate your input.

Since this is my first Northstar I want to be sure the issues I am having are being caused by the install and not another problem altogether. If I wanted to take a shortcut I would just throw money at this until it was fixed but that is not me. I do not blindly take the advice of the first person that answers my post, I look at all the advice and see what the concensus is.

i had to buy the gmrc03 for my 00 sts. but, they had one that was taken out of a prior install that was perfectly useable and i got a great deal on it! id definitely say buy one dude. i thought about it, and the headache associated with rewiring the h/u to the trunk or problems caused by your original install are just not worth it. the shop wanted to charge me 80 bucks for it, but let me have it for 30; made my decision easier.

Were you ever able to get everything to work properly? I just had a Sony HU installed in my '99 Eldorado and they used the GMRC-03 wiring harness and I'm having all of the problems you mentioned (sometimes the keyless entry doesn't work, the alarm goes off when I start the car, etc.). Just wondering if you ever figured it out.

I said this again and again, that the METRA POS-03 interface DOES NOT solve the sleep mode problem, but no one believes me. Read my thread about my stereo install in my 98 Deville, I was all hungover when I wrote it but I can't edit it now.
