| View Full Version : Consumer Report: What's YOUR opinion? We'd like to know... BeelzeBob 04-06-03, 11:38 PM Okay. So what's your opinion on these cars? Which do you own? Which HAVE you owned? Let's hear it from the people who can tell it... Ralph 04-07-03, 12:52 AM I hope I can give you the information you want. Keep in mind I have only owned my 1991 Fleetwood FWD for a month, but because of the very low miles it has, (21,000) and the fact that my stepdad bought it new, I know the whole history, here it goes. Under warranty, my dad had to get a new oil seal on the pan. He only played a tape a couple of times, and after he did, the radio failed to function, as well as the clock. He had it fixed then. Now, roughly ten years later I have had the same problem with the radio not functioning, which is strange because the tape plays. It does not have the optional Bose, it is marked "symphony sound." The radio/cassette has been out twice in two weeks and I am still waiting to get it repaired. It is very frustrating and time consuming for me, and I am going to inform Cadillac Division that this mint/stored car should NOT have this problem. Other than these, the car is very dependable and a pleasure to drive. Thank you. Angstrom 04-07-03, 10:45 PM I have owned a 91 Fleetwood since 1994. It has been a very good car. Logged about 100 miles on it and it is still running strong. The only real problem was losing a couple of air ride struts, but luckily they were both covered by extended warranty that I purchased. Also had some ECU updates done under warranty. Not great resale value on these cars. I have mine stored now for about a year. I couldn't get any reasonable money for it. So I've decided that it will become a project car some where down the road, maybe ten years or so from now. zippy8792 04-24-03, 01:11 PM I have owned my '97 DeVille for 4 years now. Bought it with 24,700 miles on it. Only thing I had go wrong was the electronic EGR valve go bad(warranty took care of it) and the rest have been trouble free miles. By the way it has 84,000 + miles now. I could decribe it as driving your living room sofa down the road. Very comfortable and pretty good MPG . I added a six cd changer and a Crime Stopper Plus auto start. In January of this year I added 2003 DTS wheels and tires I thought it looked real good. I added 3 pictures in the photo section take a look. GB Ralph 04-25-03, 01:42 AM Zippy, your car is even more beautiful than my dad's new DTS!! zippy8792 04-25-03, 06:50 PM Ralph, thanks I try to keep it clean and looking new. LymanSS 05-05-03, 02:42 AM I've had my DTS for about 15 months now. I bought it new in January 2002. It has every option except the sunroof (I wanted more headroom) and the cellular integration package (wouldn't work with my phone). I got the adaptive seating, night vision, navigation system, zebrano wood trim package, side airbags, etc etc. The first thing I did was have the interior gutted, and I added 432 square feet of noise damping material, along with a few layers of acoustic foam. The car is dead silent. 63 Db at 70 mph. It gained a little weight, but performance didn't seem to suffer too much. I did experience a couple of problems (before the modifications, so those can't be blamed on the modifications). The navigation system has worked great with one exception. Maybe once or twice a week, I start the car, and all I hear is a buzzing sound from the stereo. It's loud, and annoying and it won't go away untill I turn the car off for about two minutes. Other than that, no problems with the nav system. I had a little trouble with brake squeal, but I got over that by trying to drive more like an old man. I had to have a wheel speed sensor replaced (under warranty) and one factory recall (again, no cost). Overall I've been happy with the car and the service I've received. The acceleration isn't quite "fast" but "authoritative" wouldn't be a bad discription. Braking is a little weaker than I'd like and it could use some more grip in the corners, but in general it handles very well for a car of it's size and weight. I drive my cars hard. This car is NOTHING like my Z06, but when pushed to the limit it has a nice feel to it and the stabilitrac does a good job of keeping things under control if you get a little crazy. I plan on replacing the tires with something wider and stickier, which will hopefully improve my cornering. I'm also seeking thicker sway bars to quell the body roll. Performance in the snow is fantastic, easily allowing me to go out under almost any conditions I've seen in my area (Massacusetts). I've done several road trips with it. I haven't found a car that's better for long drives in terms of comfort an smooth easy cruising (although I sat in the new Rolls Royce, and i'm pretty sure that'd be one hell of a road tripper). Much nicer on long trips than my brother's Audi A8L. However at high speeds (say over 115) it feels too mushy. Not enough grip, and not stiff enough suspension....especially when the car is loaded. But if you plan to cruise at even vaguely legal speeds it's fantastic. There's plenty of room for four in the car. Five is ok if the third person in the back is small, or you aren't travelling too far. Trunk space is generous, but not mind blowing. Interior appointments are excellent, and everyone likes the seats (nice leather in my opinion), the seat heaters, the multizone climate control, and the reading lamps that are well placed to prevent glare to the driver. The trim impresses most people, but there are a few pieces that get on my nerves. The plastic panel surrounding the climate controls and the nav screen is really cheap and doesn't fit flush. Some of the controls on the dash look and feel cheap (although ergonomics are great) and the center console isn't as rock solid as those of other high end cars (it creaks if you lean on it). I've got 24,000 miles on the car now and I've driven it under virtually any sort of circumstances. I've been please over all with the car and with all of it's features. Even the night vision has made itself useful, saving me from a definite collision with pack of three moose on one occasion and several times with deer. If I could change a few things about the car, this is what they'd be: 1. Dual pane windows...a good bit of the cabin noise comes from the windows 2. Another 50 hp 3. Stiffer swaybars 4. Slightly better interior trim 5. Slightly stiffer suspension 6. 255/45/18 tires (I think that'd be about the right width and would maintain enough sidewall to be comfortable. If anyone has any specific questions about my car or my experience with it, feel free to ask. Scott Ralph 05-05-03, 03:12 AM Scott, I'm curious how much weight you added to the car by installing sound deadening material, what it cost, and if you think it was worth it? I would be leary of rattles after a big job like that. I had my dad's new DTS up to 120 kph, and there was only a whisper. I know what you mean by trim pieces that get on your nerves. I have a low mileage Fleetwood (21,100 miles orig.) and there were bolts not snug, maxifuse panal doesn't fit or twist down properly, etc. I also noticed a little creaking at low speeds from the rear suspension. (could be from storage, age, rubber bushings going dry?) What color is your DTS? LymanSS 05-05-03, 03:49 AM I probably added about 200 lbs. It seems like a lot, but it's only about 5 percent of the weight of the car. Roughly equivilant to one large male passenger. I can feel the difference (just as you could feel the presence of a passenger) but it's not that severe. So far, no squeaks or rattles. The work was done by very talented guys at a local shop, and I monitored all stages of the process. Since I used brand name Dynomat, the cost came out to be quite high. Just under ten grand. But it's quieter than any production car on the market (according to Car and Driver's reports on noise levels at 70 mph). I've been satisfied with the sound proofing work and if I had to make the choice again, I would definitely do it. However I think most of the effect could be had with about half the cost and weight. I'm working on getting the dual pane windows made for it, which should make a significant difference, if I ever get it done. I drove the car around stock for a while, and I have to say it was a fantastic machine for the price. The insulation work just brought it to a new level in terms of peaceful high speed cruising. Those Fleetwoods are HUGE!!! I rode in one once and thought it was awesome. I thought about getting a late one instead of my DTS but living in DC half the year, I just couldn't deal with the size. Awesome car though. Scott Ralph 05-05-03, 04:00 AM Actually, I should have mentioned that my Fleetwood is a FWD, so not really that huge. If you want huge try on the 91 Grand Marquis I had. I wouldnot want to hit a deer with the Caddy, it is so low to the ground I will probably be pushing snow around in 6 months! I have to admire you making your car right for you. There have been issues with many of my cars that I wish I took enough initiative with. PS, you can always get some level 2 bullet resistant glass from a Brinks Armored truck. Man, that stuff is thick, any thicker and you will not need bi-foculs. LOL SoundAdvantage 06-15-03, 11:23 PM I doubt either one of you would like riding in my noisey 87' it squeeks and rattles and the viberation is terrible! and there is this very loud banging sound comming from some where in my trunk. :farting: Ralph 06-15-03, 11:28 PM Originally posted by SoundAdvantage I doubt either one of you would like riding in my noisey 87' it squeeks and rattles and the viberation is terrible! and there is this very loud banging sound comming from some where in my trunk. :farting: It's probably knocking around from the people you kidnapped in your trunk, and they are trying to escape! :D cadysrme 09-25-03, 10:27 PM I've had my DTS for about 15 months now. It sounds like you are describing the same problem I had on my 2001 DTS. It hasn't happened yet to my 2003 though. The dealer fixed it and it didn't take them that long to figure out the problem. There was an amp or some connection on the back of the rear seat where the electronics are mounted that had a bad connection and was causing the loud sound out of the speakers..just a loud roar/buzz. It was so loud when I pulled it into the dealer when it was occuring that people started to walk outside to figure out what the noise was...they thought there were low flying jets! It was loud...anyway they fixed it and it never happned again. Frost 10-07-03, 11:02 AM I've got an "88 DeVille, am the 2nd owner, but have known the car since new. She is well over the 170K mile mark now. Still no rust (she has gotten undersprayed every year around this time) and twice a year she has had SLICK 50 oil, tranny and power steering treatments done. I got her in the summer of '98. I didn't like the external colour much so I had a 1995 Caddy colour applied (Mocha Metallic). It is a perfect match for the taupe interior. I also shaved off the caddy emblem on the hood, filled in the hole and mounted a larger emblem in the centre of the grille. Also reefed the "script" emblems of Cadillac and Sedan De Ville in favour of the 1998 DEVILLE block letter emblems. This summer I treated her to an upgrade of sorts. She now has NGK Iridium plugs, K&N air and oil filters, MOBIL 1 synthetic oil and tranny fluid. Next up on the agenda will be a new exhaust system. You can see photos of her in the DeVille photo section. Would I change anything else? Well, I wouldn't mind having a 4.9 instead of the 4.5 and I saw in a local boneyard that the Fleetwoods' of the same year had real wood trim for the interior - I may go back to that boneyard, pull the trim and use it as a template to fashion new ones out of walnut - I have the perfect slab of wood at home. No real huge expenses other than regular upkeep on a car that is approaching the 200,000 mile mark. She is still ultra quiet (each Spring and Fall I go over the interior and tighten anything remotely loose - can't STAND rattles in a luxury car. It is the ultimate turn-off for me), still rust free and still turns heads - especially with the exterior mods. Would I get another? Damn straight I would, but the money tree is in hibernation right now so I will continue to shower this one with affection. JJhomer83 10-08-03, 10:39 AM 1992 Cadillac Eldorado I bought this car about a month ago with 67,xxx miles on it. It is Diamond White exterior with the black ground effects around the car. There is nothing wrong with the exterior except the passenger side door. It has a large gouge in the molding that should be fixed as soon as i get some extra cash. The interior is PERFECT. The only thing is the normal wear and tear of a 11 year old car. About the car in general it is a well rounded coupe. A few things that i don't really care for are the frameless windows b/c of the noise it makes at high speeds. My car didn't come with any cup holders and that really bothers me ALOT i love my coffee in the morning. I also have the base model coupe so i dont' have the wood accents in the car. That adds a touch of class to it. The stock rims are abosolutly horrible to keep clean b/c of the 30 spokes and its very time consuming. It is also basically a 4 person car. There is no way 5 adults can fit into it. The things that i do like are endless. The interior is really comfortable and elegant. It turns a lot of heads to see a youngin driving it. It will smoke most stock cars on the road even though its the 4.9L. Gas milage is great for a v8 (no matter what anyone says im used to 10 MPG). The handling is perfect for a car of that size and how I'd expect it to handle. Well that's really about it. Would i get another one YES. But i would make sure i get the North* and a 95 or newer. Spreng 10-12-03, 11:36 AM Even being a Cadillac, I'll stick with trusty Nissan. With only 62,000 miles, my Caddi has needed the A/C replaced, new front rotors and calipers, new upper radiator hose, new transmission fluid cooler, and the EGR is throwing code P048 (not to mention it sounds like a washing machine!). I know for a fact it hasn't been abused because my mother bought it new! My other car is a '93 Nissan 240sx with 141,000 miles. It's need a clutch, A/C recharged, and the catalytic converter is clogged. It has had half as many problems with twice the mileage! The fit and finish is also a ton better... American cars just aren't the same. Big quality difference. Sandy 10-12-03, 01:06 PM If you're still reading Scott LymanSS - Hello, remember me???? I have a 1993 Sixty Special, and it's a fabulous car. Outside of blowing one of the electroluminescent "C" pillar crest lights (2 times) I have never had a gripe or a problem. Granted, car has 9,400 miles on it, but it was money well spent. I have never warmed up to the 1994 - 2003 style, but am hopefull the next re-design will be more to my liking. The CTS is growing on me, however. Ralph 10-13-03, 12:23 AM Even being a Cadillac, I'll stick with trusty Nissan. American cars just aren't the same. Big quality difference. You need to read an interesting thread under the "Non-Specific Discussion" called "Cadillac Vs Other Manufacturers." We had a large discussion about Cadillac quality, etc. ChiMick 01-27-04, 03:39 PM The only things that I would change about my 1990 DeVille (that I can think of at least) would be to have a non-Bose AM/FM/CD option and have an adjustable lumbar support in the driver's seat (an air bladder system would be sweet). Emerald 02-05-04, 02:49 PM I have a 1995 Sedan DeVille, I bought it pre-owned with very low mileage given the year I bought it. They are all highway milage as the car is local, and we are in a very rural area. I paid $6000 for it. You could not ask for a smoother ride, or a better running vehicle. It's very roomy and perfect for my family. My husband is very tall and I have two children. I no longer have to hear about a cars lack of head room, leg space etc from my husband, or listen to my kids complain about leg space and cramping. (That alone is worth the purchase lol). Everything electronic works. Everything is holding up (meaning pieces aren't coming apart, leather is excellent etc). I do hear that clicky noise some of you mentioned once in a while. I wondered what it was. Nothing major I see. The car is very quiet. No road noises or tire humming can be heard inside the car. I love the climate control panel too. I had my car about three months when a beast of a truck slammed into the back corner of it. I can not believe how little damage it had. That's impressive to say the least. I could've lived without my heater core problem, and I could live w/o the fact that the transmission already has problems, but overall I am happy with my car. :) I also want to mention I live in an area where icy roads and snow are a problem, and last month I finally got to see how this car would handle it. Well it handled it with no problems. That is a huge plus for me and anyone else who lives in areas where road conditions are a problem. I was also amazed as the gas milage this car got. 22.4 MPG is excellent for a car this size. I recently lost some MPG but that's more than likely a sign that I need to tune her up when I get her back from the Tranny shop. ChiMick 03-11-04, 12:16 PM I have a 1990 Sedan Deville that was owned by my late stepfather and that I purchased from my mother. I have more details about it in my introduction in the new members section of the board. Suffice to say that it has most available options with the exception of the winter package, sunroof and remote locks. The car is in remarkable shape for it's age, although not what I would call "pristine", just this past week the car turned over 50,000 miles. It has been well maintained but not to the letter of the maintenance schedule, which I am trying to correct the more obvious or pressing items in somewhat of a priority order. The maintenance I have performed so far: New gas charged hood springs- both had leaked and would not hold the hood open. Do yourself a favor and get replacements at your local Pep Boys or whatever. They are super easy to replace and the equivalent part is about half of what your GM dealer will charge you. Re-Glue dash pad above speedometer- Apparently this area gets hot on sunny days in a closed car and the area had basically delaminated. Super easy to fix with some silicone based glue and clamps. Instrument cluster looks so much better now. Only bad part is that I had to take off the entire upper dash pad to fix it but it was not hard just time consuming. Replace front stereo speakers- While I had the dash pad off I checked the front speakers which seemed weak. As you might have guessed they were rotted from the sun. I put a set of Kenwood KFC-4675C (http://www.kenwoodusa.com/product/product.jsp?productTypeId=29&sortBy=price&productId=117) 2-way speakers in as a replacement and although the sound quality difference isn't dramatic, it is noticeable. The speakers were a perfect fit and the only problem was the connectors which I took off of the OEM speakers and soldered to the spade-type connections on the Kenwoods. Replace steering wheel- Apparently this is a common problem with this series of Deville. I found a matching color wheel that had been repaired on eBay and swapped out the original wheel. It was an easy swap and the only real issue was disarming the air bag which is covered in both Chilton's guide and the Helm shop manual for this car. If you follow the directions it is no big deal. With the new wheel the interior looks 100% better. I did a few upgrades such as replace the air filter with a K&N, Sylvania SilverStar headlamp and turn signal bulbs, etc. as well as the usual radiator flush, lube and oil change. Front Strut replacement- the front struts were almost totally gone when I got the car and replacing them with Monroe-Matic struts has helped the overall ride quality a great deal. No more wallowing and diving under braking now. Up to the point of buying the Deville I have owned mostly smaller cars with the exception of a 1967 Olds Cutlass wagon, which was one of the best cars in terms of overall utility that I have ever had. It's a bit of an adjustment driving and being seen in a Cadillac. The Deville is much larger than my other "driver", which is an Accord Sport Coupe, and because of that the handling and performance is totally different. The Deville's 4.5 L V8 has a lot of punch- nearly as much as my 1969 GTO. The automatic is smooth and does the job well. The only issue with the engine is a very very slight hesitation from a dead stop which my natural reaction is to apply a bit more gas and then the car "catches up" and jerks forward. It is likely that I just need to be a bit smoother with the gas pedal! As others have noted the big Cads don’t stop on a dime and as such, the driver needs to think forward into traffic a bit more than a smaller car. Overall the Deville is comfortable and rock solid now that the maintenance it needed has been completed. I recently bought a used set of the wood veneer interior trim from a 1990 Fleetwood to update the interior appearance. The Deville fake "wood" is not bad but the Fleetwood trim is noticeably richer in appearance. Also I plan to put an FM-modulated CD changer in the trunk to the existing "Symphony Sound" AM/FM/Cassette which is fine other than not being able to play CD's. I had considered buying a Bose head unit and all new Bose speakers but this idea was off the charts cost-wise. The upgraded front speakers (possibly rears if they are damaged when I examine them during the process of installing the CD changer) and CD changer will have brought the sound system up to modern specs and that's the only thing that I can honestly say that the car is lacking. The interior volume is massive and the back seat passengers have almost as much leg room as a limo. I must say that the passenger and luggage "packaging" for this series of cars is outstanding. As others have said, these cars dont hold their value for some unknown reason, and if you can find a low-mileage example it's not unusual to pay less than the price of two good men's dress suits. About a "Cleveland" as the rappas say. People who don't have a clue about the age of cars think mine is only a couple of years old and I get the odd complement which is fun. An older woman stopped me the other day and commented how "elegant" that the car looked. Final analysis is that a good used early 1990's Deville gives a lot of Bling Bling for not much Ching Ching. MrSmith 03-19-04, 06:32 PM ChiMick your post is very helpful. Im thinking of taking possesion of my Fathers Caddy. He asked me to come and get it. Im iffy because I never hear anything good about them. {I dont here anything bad either.} His {well soon to be mine} is a 91' Deville, Mileage I dont know. I think its pretty hi though (100,plus) because Its been driven from Nc to New York and on other trips. I think most the miles are local though. he lives in NC and Im in Atlanta. I usually Drive an Acura Legend so it would be a change as you have made having the Honda. what im looking to know is, is it expensive to upkeep? I know not 1 single thing about Cadillac and what type of problems will I be obtaining . 7.0,hellyeah 04-08-04, 05:05 PM I took a '79 deville on its first trip since 98'. Dang that thing felt huge. I dont know if the linkage was rusted or something, but once it got up to speed there was no stopping it. I don't know how much HP the 79' V8 7.0L has, but it was plentiful. JimHare 05-02-04, 06:09 PM I just posted some info in my "introduction" thread over in that forum, but I'll add a little here. I traded my 93 Suburban with 139K miles on it for my '99 Deville in August of 2001 - hadn't really planned on a Caddy, per se, but wanted something smooth, comfy, big enough for my golf foursome, and had a bit of zip to it - I looked at things like new Merc Marquis', a couple of Lincolns, etc etc. Then just saw this Caddy at a big tent sale and went for it. Mostly pleased, apart from the repairs noted in my intro thread. The car is quiet as a church mouse, I get about 22 mpg on average with a combination of suburban/highway/around town driving. I have a 30 mile R/T commute to work in AC every day. On a trip to Florida via I-95 in May of 2002, I got about 26 or 27 mpg at a rather steady 75-80 mph, with the AC on full blast, so I really can't complain about that. There are no squeaks or rattles at all on the car (not counting the brake sensors that just came on..lol) and everything electrical works like a champ. The only nagging problem that I just haven't beaten up the dealer about enough is the electrical problem in the front that causes the Traction Control to kick in about 7 out of 10 starts from a dead stop - and about 3 out of 10 times, the ABS/TC lights come on the DIC. I've read that this is a "known problem" with electrical interference in the front wheel, and that it can be fixed with a wiring harness change, but like I said, I haven't pushed my friendly local dealer often enough to get them to fix it. Quiet, fast, good mileage, comfy as a Laz-e-boy, and relatively reliable. What more can I say.... Jim cadillacdeville 05-17-04, 11:01 PM Even being a Cadillac, I'll stick with trusty Nissan. Big quality difference.some new american cars arn't the same(the cadillac not being one of them) but my 77 has had one problem the starter went out for the first time at around 135,000 miles. she'll beat any Nissan or other jap crapper car on the road old american big blocks are the only way to go. tenmark 06-23-04, 09:17 AM I have a 1990 Sedan Deville too. I lost my job recently, and so had to jettison my DTS car payment for something I could afford cash. And it's been everything to me that I need right now. It's a true low mileage one owner "grocery getter" and everything works. It's surprising, but it's true. At 80K, it runs famously. And the interior is immaculately clean - looks new. The paint is slightly faded on the roof, but with this car, what you see is what you get. I would take those kind of problems over mechanical issues anyday. It has the impressive dark blue exterior with the dark blue leather interior. It is, however, one of the most stripped down version of these cars I've ever seen, no twilight sentinel, no power passenger seat, etc. And the radio didn't work when I bought it. That was no problem, though, I swapped it out with one from the local junk yard for $12.00. I also did the wood interior upgrade replacing the tops of the door panels and the dash trim with the real wood veneer from a 60 special. I also thought about replacing the steering wheel, as it shows slight wear, but instead opted to sew on a leather cover I bought on ebay - and it looks fine. I would prefer the 4.9, but the 4.5 moves along alright. I mean, it's serving my purpose right now. I learned to drive on a 1964 Sedan Deville, and took a 1979 Sedan Deville as my first car over a 1964 1/2 Mustang. I later owned a 1979 Coupe Deville, 1984 Coupe Deville, 1985 Seville, 1989 60 Special, 1994 Fleetwood Brougham, and 2001 DTS. I like the Fleetwood Limited but prefer the Concours interior. I'm thinking my next car will be a Limited with a few Concours upgrades. I still like the LT1 Fleetwood Broughams too. Who knows what's next. ogbuehi 07-24-04, 10:26 PM I own a 1995 Deville I bought with one previous owner with slightly less than 100k miles on it. I was sold when one of my employees let me drive his 93 seville. I couldn't believe there this car was not only big and luxurious, but fast. My car hasn't really let me down majorly until recently. Here are the few things that have gone wrong with the car: 1. When I got it the rear door cigarette lighters didn't work, the seat belt indicator went nuts, and the door chime had a mind of it's own. Took it to a shop and found out there had to be a short blowing the fuse that controlled all those things. What a pain because the first junction box was behind the electronic display. We had to lower the steering column, remove the whole front dash and the electronic display to find all those wires were hopelessly melted and fused together to separate :bonkers: . The culprit :lildevil: seemed to be that the previous owner must have tried to use a microwave or hairdryer and when the fuse blew, just stuck a higher amp fuse in the fuse box. We cut out all that gunk and rewired everything and haven't had a problem with that since. 2. Started hearing a squeaking noise from the engine and I took it to a mechanic shop. Said my serpentine belt was loose and put a new one on. That problem fixed but... 3. I guess the tightness of the new belt caused the bearing in my a/c compressor to go out. The compressor siezed while I was driving and cooked my brand new belt open. I was getting ready to go to Iraq so I needed a quick fix to keep driving and would get the compressor fixed when I came back. They put on a belt that bypassed the compressor. 4. I come back from Iraq ready to replace the belt, compressor, receiver/dryer?, and orifice tube. Put everything on and the a/c worked for about one day and stopped blowing cold air. Seemed obvious that I was leaking freon but couldn't figure out where the leak was at. Finally found out that the compressor was doing the leaking. Replaced the compressor but a/c still doesn't work. It's pretty hot here in Virginia 5. I keep getting a message that says "SERVICE RIDE CONTROL". I took it to a Cadillac dealership and they say the computer registers no code for that error. The only thing on the Cadillac website suggests is to replace some ride control module that costs $1000. It doesn't seem to affect my driving so I'll wait until I get a bonus or something. 6. The baffles in the muffler went out so now my car sounds like a Roush Mustang. No big deal because that was the motivation I needed to go ahead and get dual exhaust put. I think I'm going to put a resonator in because I have a hard time hearing my stereo at speeds faster 45 mph. (I have 2 15" subwoofers in a custom enclosure, so it is pretty loud) 7. The engine stays wet with oil all the time but doesn't seem to cook off and it doesn't drip either. I was told that that was the norm for american made engines. The mechanic said that I could get a Jasper engine replacement for $5000 (that includes the pumps and hoses and labor) but it would probably start leaking again after about 30k miles. I don't notice any drop in my oil levels. 8. The car would pull to the left as I drove and even more noticably when I accelerated. One of the motor mounts had went out and I had that replaced. Still pulls slightly to the left now even after balancing and alignment but not enough to wear on my tires. Enough on the negative stuff. This engine is punchy. I have no problem holding my own on the highway or in the city. The leather seats are nice, just wish they didn't start to feel like vinyl now. Regular maintence has kept the engine running smooth which is what counts. The color scheme is beautiful and still looks brand new after nearly ten years. It's a bright red with small metallic flakes and beige ragtop. I get compliments from people on it all the time. I put custom 20x8.5 rims which barely fit with 35 size tires. The interior is a mansion. I'm sad to see that new Cadillacs gave up all that space for new technology. I owned a 97 nissan sentra before this car and I don't know how I drove a car with such small legroom. Sorry Japan, I'll take cruiseship over a kayak anyday. I keep my seat all the way back and people who ride in the back never complain about legroom. Even if the engine blows, I'd rather replace it than buy any other car. Unless it's a big body cadillac :coolgleam grilco 09-12-04, 09:52 AM Started out with a 1990 Lincoln Continental. Had nothing but trouble. It did not take long for me to realize to get rid of it. So I saw a 1994 Caddy Eldorado - Black/Black (loaded to the max) at a local dealership and bought it. Needless to say I was thrilled. I kept the car for six years and can honestly say it was one of the BEST cars I ever owned. Sure I had a few things go wrong but what car doesn't. I had the following replaced (all under warranty as I believe in having a warranty). The water pump went and the computer board (pcm). Other than that just things like the power antennae, window molding, visor clip, auto door lock and the drains to the sunroof so I was told. I decided it was time to move on. Having been happy with the Eldo, I decided I wanted to stay with a Caddy. I bought a brand new 2004 Cadillac DTS black/black with every option except Night Vision. I didn't want the night vision. The car is AWESOME. Unfortunately I do have one gripe and that is the interior. For the money paid the interior seems a bit somewhat cheap. Now don't get me wrong I love the leather seats, the dash etc. Whats cheap to me are the Visors, the Console, Seat Belt Locks and a wee bit too much plastic. I guess it's just little things that bother me. I guess I got spoiled with my Eldo as the interior seemed much stronger all the way around. I do realize manufacturers cut corners to save money. But for Pete's sake not at the price we pay for a luxury car. The ride in the DTS is nothing but OUTSTANDING! Ultra Smooth and Powerful. Very Quiet (although there is a little wind noise in the driver side door window) If I move the window down a notch noise goes away. Gas mileage in the city is nothing to brag about, but I do a lot of stop and go. Highway mileage no complaints as it is much better. Nav, XM Radio & CD Changer superb. Love the sun roof. Integrated phone in car is fantastic. Nice option to have. Would I buy the car again? DEFINITELY. But I do hope the interior will get better. They say the 2006 or the 2008 DTS will be the ultimate. Only time will tell but lets hope so. BTW love this forum and glad I found it. 94CaddyConcours 10-06-04, 06:06 PM Scott, What did they or you do to get an extra 50 HP? BILL SONG AOL:khm3rkaliking keithss1 10-11-04, 10:31 AM I bought a 1991 CDV in April 04 with 57K on it at the time. I am impressed with the car as to the ride, comfort and quality of a 14 year old car. The car is in mint condition. I have changed the oil with synthetic, cap, rotor, fulshed and filled the cooling system with the additive and replaced the alternator and serpentine belt. I just took at trip from Philadelphia to Boston and back and the car averaged 27 m.p.g. at 65-70 miles per hour. majax 10-16-04, 02:10 AM '77 Coupe DeVille The odometer had rolled at least twice by the time we sold it. In the time that we owned it the transmission blew 150,000+ and the A/c and trunk motor never worked. '87 Eldorado My dad had the engine pretty much rebuilt by having all the gaskets replaced for about $1,300 I think it had the 4.5. Also every time you would come to a stop the oil pressure light came on. But as we were worrying about the Engine going out the trany started to go. Also the main computer in the center stac started smoking and died. The only replacement for it was in Oklahoma for $400 or so, Dad did not buy it. We paid $4500 for the car with 83,000 mi and traded it in on a '93 DeVille in '99 for $1,500 to the local Toyota dealer with 100,000 mi or so. The car had had 5 owners prior to us, take that as a valuble lesson. It came for Califorina. '93 Sedan DeVille We bought it from the Toyota used lot with 63,000 on it selling for 8,500 or 7,500 in '99. We bought it on the condition that the dealer paid for whatever was making the SSS light come on. It was something to do with the ride levelr $800 and a new battery. Since then it has had some little starting problems but fixed I never found out what they were. The struts/shocks are kind ashot now and the exhaust needs work. Thats it great car! oh and my dad blew out the power steering motor. 123,000mi '99 STS Only replaced the water pump so far, and prior prior owner only had the front rotors were replaced. 46k now 48k Great car! Our Nissan 240sx is not a car that I like to much(150,000 and dead). Our Honda is way better. Phroneo 10-24-04, 06:47 PM 1993 Deville, 128,000 miles, I think. Red w/ Carriage Top and red leather int. It's got lots of power, lots more than what I expected. The interior is nice and in good condition. We just purchased it a few months ago. When we purchased it there were two small cracks in the top middle of both front fenders that I figured I'd have fixed pretty soon. My wife drives this to work which is only about 4 blocks or so from the house. The cracks immediately grew down to the middle of the fender before I drilled holes to stop the cracks. Plastic fenders???? Man did that shock me. I though Cadillacs were supposed to be wonderful from top to bottom. Two places, one on each side at the bottom had the paint peel off for some reason?? no clue why. The top was dirty so I used a power washer on it and now is pretty as can be but I only hand wash the rest. The interior is wonderful and as I said it has lots of power but otherwise what a piece of junk. I thought it would be a safe car to purchase used but with all the brake dust on the front wheels all the time and the other problems, mainly plastic, I think I'll pass on any more caddies. It's a shame too because the ride is like floating on air--and I love that. I just never expected plastic. :crying: better luck for everyone else, all the pictures are wonderful. Phroneo Phroneo 10-24-04, 06:50 PM Strange place...It won't post exactly what I type. And I'm not using any strange font or anything. I own a 2001 Cadillac DTS. The suspension is firmer then perevious models and has an European feel to it. It handles real well much better than my 1998 Concours. I was surprised to find out that the new DTS only has 290HP down from 300HP on mine? Anyone know why they cut back on the horses? FLSurf420 11-06-04, 12:49 PM I've got a 91 deville sedan w/ 103k miles on it and i will never buy one again. Maybe its just this one that was not taken care of, but theres just too many problems with it. I have put alot of money in it and the next day something else goes wrong. I advise you to buy another car before you buy a used caddy. New on the other hand I could do if i had that type of cash. gust_1980 12-10-04, 02:19 AM hi, i currently have a 94 seville sls, but prior to that i had a 91 deville that i loved. owned it from 88k mi to 140k mi in a 3 year period and enjoyed every bit of it for the most part. it had the 4.9L in it which i liked in my deville but hated the engine in my bros 92 seville. it had tons of torque and i swear it seemed faster than my seville. it was was blue on blue with the simcon top. i even delivered pizzas in it (dont laugh, it payed for the car itself). things that bugged me though, were....it was kinda hard to clean because of all the ornamentation; grille, wire wheels, chrome trim etc...my seville is much easier to maintain in the hygiene dept. my 91 was the most comfortable and pleasing car to drive to date. although, with my bad back, i wouldve loved to had lumbar and htd seats. while being extremely comfy, the style doesnt compare to my sls. i like the idea of center console and the whole simplified style. and, the fake wood on my deville sucked ass; my buddy had a 89 fleetwood and it had real wood which was pretty, matter of fact that whole car was sweet (too bad his block cracked). other than normal things that will go on a high mi car it was pretty solid and i regret selling it. one thing though did scare me. towards that last year of ownership my steering wheel SMOKED! yeah, you heard me, it would happen sporatically, but it would come from the seem of the wheel and the column and smelled like burnt plastic (assuming wires or something) and scared the crap outa me. i never had it looked at and was afraid of trying to remove the wheel with the airbag, but i sold it before it got worse. all in all, i loved the car, my first caddy and i loved those tail fins! 8 out of 10; given year, condition, mileage etc....looking at a 00, 01 dts next. MachX 12-17-04, 04:49 AM I have a 1990 Sedan Deville that I have owned for a year. It's fairly rare with a white exterior with gold/chrome trim, styled gold aluminum wheels and a two tone white and blue interior, leather seats. The styling has aged well, and I get attention wherever I stop from police to car salespeople. My dad has a 1992 Lincoln Town Car, so I get the best of both worlds - the muscular 4.5 of my caddy or the pillowy smooth silent cruising of the Townie. But my question is, why is Cadillac so bloody inconsistent with their styling? 50's were gaudy and over trimmed, hate them. 60's they took a cue from Lincoln and smoothed it all out (if you look closely, the tail lights are very Lincoln-esque), beautiful large sedans. 70's once again large, and in charge with 'locomotive styling', though the 4 door Lincs were smoother looking and more elegant (79 black on black being the best), these are nice too. The dreaded 80's. The Devilles shrank in '85, looking little more than re-badged Olds's, and we won't even talk about the hideousness of the slant-backed Sevilles. 90's - 1989 brought about a new Deville (except with the same damn interior as the 80's Devilles) with classic styling, tasteful chrome, and a lusty 4.5L V8. I love my 90. 94 brought a major ugly redesign. The huge front grille looks like a big toothy mouth, and the huge slabs they call quarter panels look pregnant with the half covered wheel wells. Then 1997, and *bang* they got the styling dead on - a proper sized grille, they ditched the pregnant quarters, this car is dead even with 90's era Town Cars as far as smooth looks go, and go they do with the world class Northstar V8. Could we expect Cadillac to keep up the good work? Well, no. Whereas a 2000 era Townie has some of the most beautiful styling ever to grace a large car (looks as good as any Rolls, Bentley or Jag) the 00 and up Devilles look almost cartoon-ish from the front, and the squat rear 80's Seville-ish. And don't let Cadillac fool you, the interior is definately not as roomy as Devilles of the 90's. Hopefully with the '06 re-style, they can play catch-up to Lincoln in the styling department, and rear-drive would be nice. But then the Town Car is due for a re-style as well, and is already (or still) rear-drive. We'll see, come next fall. dsetter@netzero.net 01-25-05, 10:12 AM I have a '94 Fleetwood - the big RWD model with a live axel. It is absolutely huge! Whenever I try to sell it, all my friends beg me not to. It drives 4 full-sized adults in absolute style to concerts, football games, skiiing, wherever in the US! It tows a boat as well as a truck with its 350cu V8. Sure its 'old school," but I can't find a straight-up replacement for it - maybe a newer Deville. Here are my opinions: Pluses: Absolutely the biggest car you can find. You can sit in the back seat and fidget your feet around on the floor without bumping ito anything or stuffing them under the front seats. I stuffed the interior of a Jaguar (seats, dash, carpet, door panels...) into it to deliver to a guy in the next state. He drove his Buick that is built on the same frame. When he showed up and I swung pone his rear door, I new we had trouble. The Buick is a good 6" smaller in the rear seat area. We had to strap parts in his open trunk. Self leveling suspension - the car always looks poised whether towing a trailer or if the trucnk is stuffed full of bricks for that weekend project. Monster V8 never seems strained under any conditions. Just push the pedal and you go. Heck, one could call the car fast! Traction control and snow tires allow this car to handle snowy Midwestern conditions with aplomb. Nearly 20MPG at 75 on the highway. Heck, I get about 12 towing a ski boat and tons of gear. 148K miles, and I think it'll go another 100K with the usual maintenance. Minus: High trunk lift-over. Too many expensive repairs (100k tune up - $1000, ABS pump $1500, AC compressor $1000 for example, rear air shocks $750). Live axel jumpy over big bumps. A few cheap plastic interior and exterior trim pieces could be better. In all, these last generation Fleetwoods are great cars that are irreplaceable at their current value. PMartinez 02-16-05, 12:28 PM I am new to this, Her is my problem. My sister owns a 1991 DeVille that she got from my mother, the Caddy is in pretty good shape but has a leek in the heater core. i remember in the old days you could bypass the the heater core by connecting the to heater core hose to the return hose, untill you had time and money to fix the problem. Is this still possible? dstarr 02-23-05, 09:32 PM Just acquired my first ever Cadillac after 20 years of driving 4 banger minivans. The DeVille is good looking. Distinctive styling, especially the front end. Road handling, cornering, braking and accelleration are good. The Caddy sticks on corners better than a Jaguar sedan I owned once upon a time and accelerates better than a Dodge Intrepid with the full house 210 Hp v8. The Northstar gets the Caddy well above the speed limit in no time at all. Took the Caddy up skiing last weekend. Good snow car. I can pull out into an unplowed passing lane with a couple of inches of fresh snow on it, and the car feels good passing at 65 and up. Front wheel drive is the way to go. Traction control pulls it up a snowy driveway, and the antilock brakes are a confidence builder. The outside temperature indicator is really nice for those dark nights when you are wondering if that black stuff up ahead is black ice, or just wet asphalt. It's big enough to haul a teenager and his stuff to camp or to college. It makes more of an impression than the look alike Acura/Accord/Beemer/Mercedes fancy sedans. The Caddy is fine Detroit iron. It takes a good deal of the curse out of long car trips. It's a pleasure to own one. Cat De'Lac 03-12-05, 11:12 PM Hi I purchased my 1998 Deville D'Elegance with 67000, miles on it in Nov. of 04 and the honeymoon is still not over . It is the body style i like the most and i can't say enough about value for a used car! I have had many cars and love muscle cars of yesterday so after discovering the Northstar lurking under its hood i finally have it all. This gem is loaded with all but a moonroof . Windows have just been tinted with 3m 20% film (I will post pic's with tint soon), not only does it look cool it keeps cool. Next it will get a little (bump in the trunk) to compliment it's great sound system then maybe some 20's on the ground. I won't mention the very few things that might not be perfect because they have no effect on my judging of this car . Besides i'm not perfect. Thanks for listening. Anthony:dance: LuvCads 03-18-05, 12:01 PM My 1st car was a 1987 Chevrolet Sprint (5 door hatch, automatic). Got it in July, 1994. Not really my idea of what I wanted in a car, I called it the detour on the way to a bigger car LOL. It was ideal where I was travelling back & forth to town alot, and being easy on gas. In December, 1996, the Sprint started acting up (heads were bad), so I put it in the garage to sell in the spring, and I got a 1987 Oldsmibile Cutlass Ciera (4 door, 2.8 V6). This was a much nicer car to drive than the Sprint. I had that car until March, 1999. While I owned the Oldsmobile, I briefly owned a 1975 Buick Limited Park Avenue. That car was a tank, and jet black, 4 door with a 455 4bbl V8 rumbling under the hood. After I got rid of that, I got a 1989 Chevrolet Celebrity Eurosport for a short time, 4 door, maroon with a 2.8 V6. The end of Oldsmobile ownership came when I came across a 1985 Pontiac Parisienne Brougham, 4 door, gold with wire wheels. It had some major problems, and I was in a cash crunch so I got rid of it in April, 1999. From April, 1999 to Feb'05 I didn't have a car. That's when I got the Coupe DeVille that I currently own. I was just out for a drive because it's a beautiful day today, and I thought to myself...."I don't think I could ever go back to another make of car, if I can get another Cadillac after this one, I will!!!" Last night, I was having a few beers so I got my room-mate to drive me around. He was in his glory driving around town in a Caddy LOL. Even his girlfriend, a devoted Honda Prelude lover, said she'd love to have a Coupe like mine!!! I thought she was out of her mind, where she was a devoted Honda fan all along LOL. As far as luxury cars go, if I couldn't find a Caddy as my next one, I would definitely drive a Lincoln. But I plan on keeping my Coupe for a long time because it's my 1st Caddy, and I love the attention this car generates. Peace to all the Caddy drivers out there!!! Birdie 04-04-05, 12:57 AM Currently have a 89 fwd fleetwood,92 Deville,96 seville. A+++ on all. Glad I sold the 96 town car, I used to buy a new town car every 2 years, But the 97 and up bodystyle makes me puke. Cadillac all the way now. Probably be looking for a new sls or sts soon. Keep up the great work GM. Phroneo 04-09-05, 04:27 PM I'm still amazed at this car. We haven't had it very long and more and more issues just make me wonder. I still don't get why they used plastic. Then there is the issue with our paint. The paint is FALLING OFF! No I don't take it to the car wash. The paint is falling off the plastic car. I've had some junk cars in my life but I don't think any would top this. We expected a nice car. This one floats a bit too much and just seems worn out. I forget at the moment how many miles, somewhere around 125k or so...I guess these simply aren't made well anymore. That's so sad because we had to look for awhile to find the Maroon with the white carriage top. It also uses about a quart of oil between changes. That's enough complaining for now. Sorry.... Dave amott37 05-05-05, 06:15 AM My 97 Deville is a super rocket and the top in American cars. If you check out the STS owners you'll laugh! The Deville is a better machine all round, more comfort, more reliable (109000 miles and like new). The only repair has been new rear shocks, my fault. Very fast from the dig and a lot of top end. The weak spot in the drive train is mid range 35-50 is slugish. Biggest problem I have is keeping the tree fallings out of the vent system.this is my 4th caddie, 86 coupe D, 81 Fleetwood, 86 fleetwood and this 97 Deville. I did own a 91 towncar which honestly was better than my first 3 caddies but not my 97 D. bigeel0 05-17-05, 01:38 PM 99 Deville Concours I bought this caddy in Reno, Nevada, in 2004. Originally, it had 75,000 miles on it. It had over $2000.00 worth of work done for repair and maintenance. It was priveously owned by a trust company, which could mean anything, but its black on black:rolleyes2 . I have really enjoyed this vehicle. Presently, it has 109,000 miles on it, and mostly highway miles. I am getting about 22 miles to the gallon, and 26MPH when i change the oil. I drive the car on highways alot. I presently live in the high desert in arizona and travel to Flagstaff, Phx, and Albq, nm alot. The comfort and cruising is execeptionally. I use to own a 91 legend, and the power and pick up is about the same, but what the caddy lacks in cornering, make up in highway power and cruise holding power. I am over 6'1" and accessible to instruments and seat comfort is a plus:coolgleam. People just look when its gets it monthly cleaning. I am looking for a good set of tires that will enhance the riding. I am looking at yokohama tires versus Bridgestone, How do onther caddy owners think about these tires? I also have the same problem other caddy owners have with SES light and gas cap thing. I have done nothing yet to it and its drive the same. Sometime, I'll attend to it. Just a fine car, and I have no regrets. derrty_deville 05-30-05, 11:06 PM the thing i love about my 89 sedan deville and my 86 coupe is mainly the room. today for example i just returned from a 200 mile trip which i take frequently over the smmer and the room definitely helps. i sit in the back and have room to strech my legs. to match this you need a suv or a minivan at least. and even with the car being a shocking 16 years old i still walk out to the parking lot and proudly walk up to it. and i say yea thats my lac there. HUD 06-04-05, 11:15 AM Scott, I have an 02 DTS andhad the same problem with my radio. The dealer replaced the amp. and the probem was fixed. cadibrougham 06-08-05, 04:03 PM first of all i have BRIDGE STONES on My DEVILLE no choice thats the way it came but i love them. They are very very very quite on the road and not to stiff of side wall.:) :coolgleam I own a beatifull 1993 Sedan DeVille, its dark green with tan top and eleganct vougue rims (not tires.)_ I bought i t at LUND cadillac with 59,000 miles on it in feb. Since then i have put over 5,000 miles on it. new water pump ,hoses and stuff like that at the dealer it had the original waterpump and coolant and hoses in it. YUKEY, the tech said he had to spray air PSI up the radiator to get the greeen sludge out, (they didnt tell me that when i bought it).(pun intended) i love the ride and the room, the back seat is hugh. The 4.9 is a little noisey in the morning but i LOVE IT. You drive down the road listeing to the slightly noisey motor but you dont feel it vibrate like most cars its great. after 5 min its quite. the only thing i CANT STAND about this DeVille is not have a TACH or a TEMP Gauge or a VOLT meter. the dash only gives you speeed miles and a plethora of dummy lights. otherwise the car is great i call it the D"ELEGANCE and get confused looks from people who ask about it. I had a 1991 seville and i think the deville is nicer for me im 280 pounds and 6ft 1 in. it was pretty small in the SeVille. The SeVille was so much quicker then the DeVille but the DeVille is obviuosly HEAVIER. my Seville was not as smooth as the DEVille but sure was loaded with power. I went and test drove the new line of cadillacs and the only thing i could fit in comfortably for a big guy is the deville or escalade. Even the 05 DeVille was little small for me my right knee cap hits that console and it not comfortable at all. so for now i will stick with my 93. I heard the 06 DTS will have a front bench for 3 people so i assume no console in the middle of the dash i look forward to driving that. anyways if your big like me and need room and power go with it DEVILLES ROCK!!!! i love all the cars in the line up everyone ESP 99 ltd. fleetwood. and 60 SPECIALS. but again if your big you need a big car haha. also i learnd that if you drive a cadillac always have $1,500 dollars in the bank for the car on any day at any given time for any given automotive malfunction. im a ASE TECH. and i take mycar to the dealer, people think im stupid, i just DONT want to work ON MY CAR! does that sound funny? let me know cadibrougham@cox.net ( i get interesting responses.) thanks:) TLeTourneau 06-30-05, 01:46 PM Hello all, I picked up a Crimson Pearl 03 DeVille about a month ago with 75K on the clock, what a Gorgeous color. This is my third Caddy and I have loved them all (yep, even the old diesel Fleetwood). It's a great car everything I have come to expact from GM's luxury division (SAAB doesn't count :nyanya: ). Tom imranokazmi 02-01-06, 10:57 PM 1992 Cadillac Eldorado I bought this car about a month ago with 67,xxx miles on it. Hi I need your advice FAST!!! I've been browsing thru ur archives for a month now; since contemplating purchase of a 92 Fleetwood here in Dubai (UAE); done 160000 kms, ABS problem; TRACTION OFF & ANTI LOCK lighted on the instrument panel; besides CHECK CCR lighted on the panel left to the steering (http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=583829#) (below). Furthermore, does the 92 Fleetwood have cruise? BTW I am contemplating the purchase decision coming Saturday :-) I do have other options like a 2001 Catair Caddy for USD 10,000... and 95 STS for USD 2,000 but the owner says "EVERY MONTH ON AN AVERAGE I SPEND USD 100+ ON REPAIRS + WASTED TIME AT MECHANICS..." KEEP IN MIND THAT I'VE ALWAYS LOVED CADDY'S SINCE WHEN I WAS A CHILD AND THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE THAT I CAN REALIZE THAT DREAM. Considering you are all PROS at Caddy's; is it a good buy at USD 1,500? and how much should I expect to spend on it? While I truly love this white pearl beauty with its chocolate roadster roof, I have been very disappointed with Cadillac's quaility. I thinks that its is a beautifully made machine but made from some very poor quality parts and I have the invoices to prove it! This, despite the fact that the car is extremely well cared for and is in showroom condition. I also found out that Cadillac's customer service department is nothing but smoke and mirrors. S33k3r_13 02-02-06, 08:12 PM I bought a 2002 DHS in November of last year (2005) with a little over 36K on it. Now let me tell you I have had some small problems with it that the dealer has taken care of (After 2-3 trips ffs:banghead: ) and aside from that I LOVE THIS CAR;) . It makes me smile every time I drive it and I'm a grumpy person by nature so you can imagine. The power is excellent and smooth as can be and the ride is excellent!!! I will tell you they have given me a 2006 DTS & then a 2006 STS as loaners and IMHO they can't compare to the ride of my DHS. I always like my Caddy's to be smooth. Anyway that's my 2 cents for now. Hopefully no more problems coming up to make me change this. S33k3r_13 cadillacgirl 02-08-06, 07:35 AM i own a 98 seden deville and i just love it.. i too have a tall husband and 2 teenagers and the room and comfort is just great i bought i 2nd with low mileage and interoir was and still is in great shape. i have driven many different cars from a truck to a z/28 and i am hooked on cadillac.:bouncy: Tombo47 02-08-06, 07:36 PM Whats up Gents and Gals, I am a proud owner of a sable black on black2000 DTS. My only beef is the fool before me didnt take care of the wood trim with pledge or protectant, so the shifter and cnsole are a little faded. This car handles insanely well for a car of its size. There is very little chrome on it, not as much as the base deville. This is due to its sportier initiative. Leather is soft and supple with no damage or lines. Great news considering it has 93K on the clock. The 300HP northstar is just amazing. The car is very menacing and intimidating, and glides. But when you mash the throttle you hear a beautiful exhaust note and the ride gets stiff. Stabilitrak and Traction Control ave never let me slide on ice. I tried to spin the car out on a court of ice and failed. This is my fourth Caddy, 1992 Eldorado Blk/Red, 1987 Fleetwood Brougham RWD (nothing is smoother) and a 1995 Eldorado in white diamond. I havent had any parts fall off of my cars dstarr 02-22-06, 10:31 PM A year has gone by since I first posted to this thread. I still have the '99 Deville. I have put 25K miles on it since this time last year (79K miles total). In a year's time and 25K miles nothing , absolutely nothing, has broken. All the gadgets and gizmo's still work. She gets fresh oil when she asks for it (about 6K miles per oil change). I treated her to fresh radiator coolant and that's it for maintenance. In a month or so, I'll have to buy new tires, but doing 78K on a set of tires is pretty good. Paint and interior is still very good, not quite like new, but plenty good enough for a 7 year old car. The styling is distinctive, the legroom is outstanding, the ride is good, the Northstar comes on like John the Bear when I stamp on it. I can climb into it after a long day at the office and feel pampered driving home thru Rt 128 traffic. A truly wonderful car. Worth every penny. '99 was the last year of really American styling on the Caddy. It is low, good eggcrate grille, smooth front end, and the tall thin taillights at the rear. Good looking car. The 2000 model redid the rear end in a more Euro-style. It's not bad, but I like the '99 styling better. For a big car, it looks good, and I want a big car. Let's hope GM keeps making real large Caddy Devilles. Granted it's a niche car, but it's a bigger market niche than Corvette. They ought to be able to make money selling them. To be a real Caddy, it's got to be big, with real rear seats with grown up leg room in the rear as well as the front. And a trunk big enough for four adult's worth of luggage. Was it me, I'd use less glossy plastic fakewood trim on the interior. I may replace all the shock absorbers with the stiffest ones I can find. The handling is OK and the ride is good, but I think I might trade off a little ride softness for stiffer cornering. Roads around here are mostly smooth as can be, so the car doesn't really need an exceptionally soft suspension. Some of the on-ramps can be very twisty (especially at night at well over the speed limit) and stiffer handling would be a confidance builder. Salsashark 03-08-06, 11:03 AM 1978 Deville I bought that car from a retired Cadillac dealer off an R.V. lot for $900. It was a Beigey pink color with a padded rust colored top and interior all leather with 92,000 miles on it, in really nice condition inside and out...this was in '93....I loved it for 5 years and never had any major problems other than basic tune ups and a new battery. Greatest car I ever owned but, was moving cross country and couldnt take it so I sold it and it broke my heart. I recently purchased a dark blue Firemist '93 Sixty Special for a mere $800and the love affair continues...although it has a ton of miles (192,000 +) it was a one owner who lived in the country and drove into town to work everyday so, i'm hoping I can baby this one along for a while yet. Other than the miles and some basic maintence issues it seems to be a strong runner....everything in it and on it seems to work fine and I think She's happy to have a new home...she seems to run better and better everyday that I drive her. eternity 03-11-06, 08:07 AM Just bought 01 DTS with 44k miles. Previous (one) owner had problems with Stabilitrac light coming on, is that a known problem? Thought I would try a Caddy instead of the Lexus or BMW, if reliability is good, I think I will like the car. Bought my first Caddy 30 years ago, but sold it because it got less than 10 mpg. Have not had one since. Also, wood console has lots of minor scratches, easy to replace? Or suggestions on treating the scratches? I tried a little Carnuba way, it helped some. WhiteFleet 04-02-06, 01:08 PM Hi guys, I owned a Fiat Tipo (my first car) a Citroen ZX Furio, Honda Prelude (guess I’ am French ;) and I everyday drive a Lincoln LS V6. What sensation is to drive a Caddy, this is like a boat on 4 wheels but I should say a Yacht in fact cos mine is 15 years old and full of options and gadgets when during this time in Europe the passenger’s electric windows was an option. Everything is runing good and lots of parts are original. If some parts need to be changed its simply becvause the previous owner didnt care enough about his car. Now I know exactly what “cruising” means and after spending 8 years at 150-180km/h on European motorway I enjoy driving smoothly with my 91 Cadillac Fleetwood. Long life to CADILLACOWNERS WEB SITE MikeyTrees 04-08-06, 03:35 PM 1994 Sedan Deville -113k 4.9L w/ Day Night package. This thing still runs like new. Honestly the only parts that seemed to give up after the first 100k have been; the door window motor, water pump, plastic coolant T to heater (they should make this out of aluminium) BUT THAT's IT! This engine runs incredible. Always given it premium gas which is required, but I consider it to be $150-$200 more per year as good PM work. The air ride still works like a charm, GM does sell a bypass system for these years which is MUCH cheaper than orig equip. I threw about 12 oz. of Lucas Tranny stuff to revive the fluid and it shifts smoother than glass. Front wheel drive with a reliable engine, and good on gas while crusing the highway... I love this car. I recenlty replaced emblems, ventshades, and added rockers and pillars in chrome. I think it looks better now then when it came off the line. This is the pic before. But you can't miss with this year Deville. http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19353&stc=1&d=1144527901 Tchiak 04-28-06, 07:56 AM 1991 Deville - 197k 4.9L with daylights. Everything runs beautifully in it, although i have had problems with water leaks getting into the backseat of the car and my fuel guage center seems to not want to turn on now adays. The engine has been rebuilt and brake system redone. She runs good. I get about 14-16MPG In the city, depending on how many red lights i run into(i always get the side with the looooong red lights). lukky4u 05-04-06, 09:41 PM i have a 98 deville paid 8100. for it. Wasnt sure about making this purchase cause the gas prices now reaching $3+. My other consideration was a ford explorer. well i can say that i made the right choice. MPG not bad at all smooth as silk ride, plenty of horses and at this point seems reliable. I purchased it with 61000 on it about 2 months ago and put 1500 on it since. Only issue i have with it is ...no CD player. I believe there is CD changer connection in the trunk but honestly wouldnt know where to get one. but i do love this car... bigbea 05-06-06, 10:29 PM I own a 94 Cadillac Deville and a 89 Brougham. Overall I am a huge cadillac fan. The comfort and ride are sooo trademark. The 4.9L isn't that fast but it sure is reliable. Only con to the non N* is GAS MILEAGE. TwoUpTwoDown 05-15-06, 02:15 AM I have a 1994 Deville, dark blue in and out. I asbolutely love it. Its got 84k miles on it, with one previous owner whom i know personally. He drove it only to church and family reunions, and the only thing he's ever had to fix or replace was the alternator and the windshield wiper motor. I'm 6 foot 5 and its the most spacious car Ive ever been in. I also have a '79 Fleetwood Brougham D'Elegance (off topic i know)with an immaculate original interior with tan leather and shag carpet. I love the '94 but the '79 is my pride and joy. 2003DevilleDTS 05-25-06, 11:43 AM New to the forum. I own a 2003 Deville DTS and like it alot. I have rented alot of tese cars for business trips and decided to buy one. I would never pay the crazy money they want new but I did find one in my price range and I am happy with it so far. I think cadilac managed to combine a luxury car with a sporty fun car to drive. I only things I would change would be from front wheel drive to rear wheel drive and a little more horses. Other then that it good. Chickengas 05-29-06, 07:48 PM 2001 DTS - loaded w/nightvision NEVER AGAIN. Cadillac draws you in with its "fit and finish" crap, and basically what your ending up with is an overpriced Chevy or Buick. All the same problems with trim and window motors and plastic buttons. Frost 06-17-06, 09:46 PM Most of the malcontents here seem to think that they can pay a used car price for one, but that car should operate and function just as it did when it left the factory! More's the pity, I suppose because they will continue to hunt down every squeak, every rattle and rant on into the night against the injustice of it all. Imagine a X years old car not living up to it's original out-of=the-box warranty! I suppose they use that same logic when buying stereos or anything used. I own 2 of these cars, an '88 and a '97. Both of them were bought used because the price was right; I knew they were used, I expected to find the problems and small annoyances that used cars bring to the table and I continue to enjoy both of these cars to the max. If you got the money to buy a new one, good on you. And expect to find nothing wrong with that new car, either. You're paying the big bucks to be the first to sit your ass in that car and be the envy of the neighbours. But if you go the cheaper route and buy used - expect all that follows that decision, as well. Don't tar the entire line just because a car didn't live up to unrealistic expectations. The 32,000 miles that we have put on it in the last 2 years have been expensive to say the least! Had to replace the engine last spring, then the starter, and O2 sensor went. The heater fan went shortly after that! Brakes had to be replaced too. I don't mind replacing the "wear and tear" items, but to replace a Northstar engine at 126K is just ridiculous. The ride doesn't cut it on the roads here in Maine either-the suspension is just too soft for frost heaves and potholes-the thing bottoms out all too easily. Gas mileage is impressive for such a large car-22.5 around town and nearly 25 on the I. Very comfortable if the road is smooth. Looks are impressive with the carriage top! Although there are some that I like, I will probably never purchase another one! JimHare 07-15-06, 10:36 PM Curious as to why you had to replace the engine? Complete self-destruct? And didn't the new engine include a starter? Your post doesn't quite make sense - Discounting the engine, you've replaced 1 starter, 1 sensor and heater fan in 132,000 miles...That doesn't sound too damn bad to me. Give us details about the 'replaced' engine... The only reason I ask is that I had a '99 D for about 4 years, from 33K to 100K and it cost me two alternators and a radiator overflow tank that whole time. And my '02, with 138,000 on it has gone through 1 A/C compressor, 1 window regulator and a headlight bulb.. 31415926 09-19-06, 09:52 PM I like my 98 Deville. Had some small problems but the engine is still running strong at 230K miles with 30 highway MPG in the summer time. carmaster 09-20-06, 02:26 PM My 96 deville bottoms out real easy too. jcw122 11-26-06, 03:23 PM I have a 2000 Deville, I'm 17 and needless to say I love it. 77CDV 11-26-06, 05:08 PM I had an 89 Sixty Special, triple dark blue, bought at 80K miles, slapped on another 80K miles over 5 years (including one cross-country trip) and never had a problem. Only sold it cause I had finally finished school and wanted something new for once. Also had a 2003 DHS, bronzemist over shale. Also a wonderful car with not a peep in the 3 years I had it. I love my Caddys!!!!!! :) Craig MachX 11-28-06, 07:50 AM I have to recant on my former post regarding the appearance of the 2000-05 deVilles as I now like the look. I now find it to be very elegant and those quad exhaust outlets look badass. My 1990 deVille has now sort of been relegated to parts car status with the purchase of my 1991 SDV. The 1991 is dark blue on dark blue leather SO much nicer and easier to keep clean looking. My 1990 white leather always looked dirty (especially the stitching) no matter how much I scrubbed. And while the 4.5L was quick, the 4.9 has downright aggressive torque making the car feel much more authoritative. Even though the 91 has over 200 000 miles on it, it idles perfectly with only a slight lope at idle, enough to let you know there is a burly V8 under the hood. Under acceleration there is no cabin vibration, only the slightest vibration in the steering wheel. My 90 feels rougher, and its engine has a bit of an oil leak. The ride in the 91 is sublime, feeling much like my dad's Town Car although it has way more sway and bounce over the road than my 90. The 90 has a much more rigid ride (though still supple and absorbant) and zero nosedive under hard braking, onramps are a treat. Anybody know if the suspension was changed THAT MUCH between 90 and 91? The 4.9 sounds way better and cleaner when you rev it, and it doesn't have that nasty bearing knock when you fire it up cold like my 90's 4.5 has, despite having 30000 more miles. Overall, the 91 feels way smoother and more refined than the 90. I like how the steering in the 91 doesn't bog down the engine when you turn the wheel while stopped, the 90 groans and vibrates. When you turn the key in my 91, you don't feel the starter crank the engine at all, whereas in my 1990 you can slightly feel it. The electric locks on the 91 have a much smoother sound than the loud THUNK the locks make in my 90. Either Cadillac made major revisions to the car when the 1990 Town Car came out or my 91 was better taken care of than my 90. Oh and you shouldn't be worried about mileage when buying a Caddy, they will run to 300k miles and beyond if they are taken care of. I bought a 1990 Fleetwood ($450) for parts for my 1990 and it had 280 000 miles miles on it and it ran and drove perfectly! The only reason I didn't keep it was because I needed a front fender and hood and my 90 had less miles on it. I wish I had kept the Fleetwood now that I know how long these cars will last! Note: I still hate the styling of the 94-96 deVilles. And 85-88 deVilles still suck. gergreg 01-07-07, 01:21 AM I have a CTS-V and I'm dismayed that I didn't get a 335i. GM's interior build quality sucks. Sick of rattles. cadillac_pimpz 03-21-07, 11:18 PM Hello all, I picked up a Crimson Pearl 03 DeVille about a month ago with 75K on the clock, what a Gorgeous color. Not knowing a whole lot the time, I quickly learned how bad the 4100V8 could be. It was a beautiful 82 Seville with 80K on it but sold it quickly with a bad taste in my mouth for Cadillacs. Fast forward six years to 98 when a 91 SDV caught my eye...much better experience this time. Put 50k on it and sold it to a cousin with 170K...it is still going strong with only new fuel injectors and over 200k. I then purchased a 93 SDV in Dk Slate Gray/Red leather with 43k on it. I am still driving it and currently have 57k on it. Then purchased a 91 SDV in light antelope that was just like new...had 70k on it, but you'd have never known. Should have kept it, but had an offer for it that I couldn't refuse. My latest purchase is a 91 Fleetwood in the same color as my 93 with 60k on it...not sure what to do from here??? Keep both...sell one? Either way...I will always be a fan! Hope to graduate to 93 Ultra at some point, but will continue enjoying what I have!!! neturn 07-19-07, 11:28 PM I bought a second-hand 1999 STS Deville which had been imported into New Zealand from an Embassy in Japan. Cadillac is not a common car here in New Zealand - there are very few of them and there is no dealership as such, although GM do have other cars here. So my car is listed as an "exotic" Bearing in mind that I sold a Mercedes to buy a BMW which gave me nothing but trouble and then sold my BMW to buy the Cadillac, I was taking a risk. But I am delighted with it. My only problem is getting information about it. I wrote to GM several times asking for assistance but I was totally ignored. Thank goodness for the internet and this forum. The car is a real head-turner. It has a low mileage (around 18000 miles) and is in mint condition. I even managed to get the DIC changed from Japanese to English, although initially they changed it to US English, but now it is reading in English with metric information such as temperature etc. It's a bit of a learning curve - the manual pretty much sucks. However the car is pretty complex and for me it has been a matter of trial and error. Even with the manual, setting the memory for the radio was a bit of an effort. Interestingly, although my BMW was a 2 liter, this car is less expensive to run, even though it is more than twice the literage. My only gripe is that so few dealers will send parts to New Zealand and so I am off to the US in one week to buy lots of little bits n bobs for the car, such a a small rubber grommet which is broken. Apart from that, this car is superb and is easily the best I have owned. Cars Owned: Mercedes SLK, BMW 280i, Lexus, Ford Fairlane Ghia (worst car I ever owned) Honda Legend, Honda Accord, Hond Prelude. Best car I ever owned? THIS ONE! Worst backup from manufacturer? Again, THIS ONE. But the Holden dealer (GM) here has been very helpful. Destroyer 07-26-07, 10:23 PM My experience with my '98 Deville was awful. IMO the Northstar is the Cadillacs fall from grace as was the 4.1 before it. Cadillac needs to start using corporate Chevrolet engines again. Would a Deville, STS, DTS or whatever with a 303hp 5.3 Chevy motor have been a bad car?. I think not. Old Fleetwood 09-17-07, 10:14 PM Got my 1995 Fleetwood Brougham in May of 2006 with about 91,242 miles on it from a Texas owner who kept it in showroom condition. Since then I've been wowed at how this barge has proven to be extremely fast, capable and surprisingly fuel-thrifty for its size. It doesn't even know it has our PopUp RV on the trailer hitch when we tow (and this car isn't equipped with the V4P towing package, either). The only major repair has been to the right rear window mechanism which let the window drop all the way down when I lowered it just a bit and those damn el cheapo plastic runners split apart in the channels. What a helluva job to fix. To aid in towing, I had a Carolina Performance Transmissions Stage II HydraMatic 4L60E unit plus high-stall torque converter installed and it makes a great difference off the line in acceleration both towing and when getting on to freeways from short entrance ramps. As a highway cruiser, there are none better. She's totally effortless and comfortable, even when the road gets a bit twisty which is surprising considering the weight of this big girl. I say this having had a bit of experience as a "road warrior" with good and not-so-good company cars; from full-size, V-8, Plymouth Fury IIs of the late 1960s to Ford Torinos of the mid 1970s (personal business mileage ~1mil) and owning Mercedes, Mercury, Buick, Plymouth, Chrysler, AMC, Dodge, Pontiac GTO, Chevrolet personally. Overall, Cadillac is losing high-end customers, in my not so humble opinion, by abandoning the full-frame barge such as this since this big, Dark Adriatic Blue FWB still elicits awestruck stares from just about everybody standing beside the road as it rolls by. Almost nobody believes she's a twelve-year-old. And at the campgrounds, she always draws a crowd. RRG 09-18-07, 05:36 AM I have had my 99 Deville for 7 years now . Nice powerfull, comfortable ride . Great looking car , but under engineered and poor quality for a 50 thousand dollar car . Far to many expensive problems . Thats why they depreciate so fast , once the warrenty is gone no one wants them . You can buy a year old one for less then half the new price . That speaks volumes about the car , but G M doesen't care , and thats why Toyota is now number 1 !!! My next car will be a Lexus , I have had a 96 Toyota SUV since new and only had to replace brakes and tires . Thats the quality I want . RRG ThrowSumD'sONDatBiSH 10-25-07, 03:55 AM I got two cadillacs. A 92 and a 95. The 92 is the best front wheel drive car I've ever driven I used to make super aggressive high speed turns to where the back slides out a little bit and you can still control it excellent handling. The 95 is faster, and thats about it. The handling is waay less better then the 92 in my opinion and I had to get used to the 95 because brakes suck. The Northstar seems like its a very expensive high tech machinary that was designed by the best engineers but it seems like it was rushed, and it seems like they made a very good engine thrown together with cheaper parts to increase profit. Barber of Seville 12-20-07, 10:07 AM My personal driver is now a 2000 DeVille. Picked it up with 100K for $5800. Runs great, looks better...but the vibration issue over 65mph is something GM should hang their head in shame about. http://www.carsurvey.org/viewcomments_review_19040.html Have to clear the SES P0420 and get the center mounted LED brake light fixed...but other than that an OK ride so far. 1990 Seville with the 4.9 liter - indestructible, reliable. 1986 FWD Fleetwood - Milkshake Motor need I say more. 1981 Seville Elegante Diesel - slow but reliable once they replaced the engine with a new factory one. grgrose 12-24-07, 04:17 PM I have a 94 Deville that I saved from the bone yard last Christmas. The car had 111000 miles on it when I brought it home. Over the pasy year I have invested around $1500 dollars in it to bring it back to a reliable state. Most of that is due to being a northern car and neglect. All of the transmission lines and brake lines had to replaced to rot. The car is no doubt a land yacht! It is the most comfortable car I have ever owned. I logged 1500 miles on it going on vacation last year and I am truly surpirised at the fuel economy. Fo a long road trip, I am convinced this is the only way to go!. HaydenOothout 01-11-08, 12:20 PM I Love my 99 deville its the best jasper60103 01-16-08, 10:15 AM Its great to hear all the positive testimonies. This is my first caddy. I purchased my 04 base Deville in Mar 07. It was a single owner, lease return with ~25,500 miles. I put on about another 7k miles since then. No problems at all aside from initial defects I discovered right after I took delivery. Air pump replaced, windnoise from rear quarter window (replaced) and noisey Blower motor (replaced). All covered under warranty. The dealer also replaced front brakes and rotors under their good will policy. I truely enjoy driving this car. The engine and trans produce a ride as smooth as silk. I sometimes prefer just to turn off the radio and listen to it pur down the road. Bradscaddi 02-13-08, 01:15 AM I'm happy with my 95 deville and have had only minor problems with it fuses, power antenna, and i still haven't fixed my A/C. I love it, its big and luxurious. The thing i don't like is I like to go fast and I can do that with my 4.9L the acceleration is great, a little iffy on the road over 100. The body roll on it is terrible it's hard to stay on the road if it is windy. It was a pain to put in my new pioneer stereo because no one makes a kit (I rigged one for a 95 Seville, it works) and I had to run all the wires to the trunk. Personally I'm glad I didn't buy it when my step mom did because for a car with only 40,000 miles on it she had a lot of stuff go wrong, the biggest being the fuel injectors died, some chip on the engine fried, and all the stock wheels became warped so now there are cheap ones on there with hub caps. Then just a few days ago my dad took it to work (he's getting a new engine in his 04 Silverado) and he spun out on an icy exit ramp hit the curb on "a sharp pointy thing" and got me a flat tire, then the spare went flat on him. LOL, AAA is a great thing. Like I said I love the car, just glad I got it after all the big problems. 111,400 miles and running strong. Lithorian 02-22-08, 05:05 AM same story as brad on my 95 deville, had a sh*tpot of problems before it was passed down to me, and after the problems were sorted out around 50k the car has run on the new parts to 150k and still running strong (revised parts perhaps?) lol, anyways, i love this car, been real good to me, even with a severely messed up starter it still starts every time i turn the key! 96DEVILLE2LOW 02-29-08, 03:52 PM my 96 deville has been ok for now i got it for 3000 almost a year ago with a new tranny from the dealer and a radiator , the battery was stock and the cable i had to replace that with new one from the dealer (150 bucks) , and a optima battery , and currently my traction light ,abs light , and service ride control are on, for now its only been minor things , im about to get some 14 x 6 daytons and 5th wheel for the trunk ill have some pics soon minnesotamom 03-01-08, 10:47 AM I have a '96 DeVille and I love it. Bought it for $2500 with 147,000 miles on it almost two years ago. It now has almost 170,000 miles and has just started having problems....bad shocks, codes popping up. I've had to replace the battery, brakes, the fuel pump and put on tires. The engine still runs great..and even when it was 20 below last week and my car had sat outside all night it started right up. The exterior is just starting to get a couple of little spots of rust (going to try my hand and doing some touch up painting this summer) and the leather interior looks virtually show-room new. Maybe I'm biased because my last few cars were Fords (as in "fix or repair daily") and I had to get new transmissions/head gaskets/engine mounts about as often as I had to add washer fluid, but even at almost 170,000 my DeVille has been the best car I've ever owned. I'm planning on driving it until I can't any more and then I'll buy another. dann2901 05-10-08, 04:18 PM I rescue a 89 coupe deville (Fleetwood) from a second owner's son, with 170 thousand miles on it. I manage 30 thousand miles, Before replacing motor and trans. Knowing about caddy I know what I,m in for I guest it,s the love of the car. (Too say I,m restoring the whole car). Pictures to come later. | |
