GM is NOW saying that the LS2 burning a quart of oil every 1000 miles is normal. No further action required on GM's part.

This according to my dealer today as I returned the car to top off the oil again. So thats another 2 quarts in 2000 miles even on the new engine.

It went like this: Blah, blah, blah, high compression engine, blah, blah blah live with it and carry around oil in your trunk at all times, blah, blah, blah.

Oh, and for good measure my rear is dripping again after 1000 miles and I must have 5 or 6 clunks going on at every shift.

Am I griping too much? I sound like a woman bitching.

The standards for acceptable oil consuption on LSx's is the same as the Northstar: Up to 1 quart per 1,000 miles. Harder driving tends to exacerbate consumption on the LS engines.

You can request a consumption test, but you'll need to bring the car in every 500 miles to have it checked. If they find excessive consumption, they'll probably replace the rings. Most of the Northstars I've seen sucking oil are due to a ring seal issue, but I'm not sure about the LS, since we've never torn one down for consumption.

Either way, that bites.

GM also says that "piston slap" noise is normal, and for dealers not to do anything about it!! Where the heck is GM getting it's findings from..

Tony, this is my second engine in my 06. First one was replaced at 1500 miles when it was using one quart every 300 miles.

I have seen GTOs and Corvettes with the same thing. Something changed in the LS2s and its making them burn more oil.

Wow...this is bad. My LS1 might eat a bit of oil over the course of 3,000 miles....sometimes none....but 1 qt per 1,000 miles? Wow!

I really want to get a V but the more I read the more I'm worried about buying one.

My WS6 is ancient when looking at how it's built and what it has...but I've never had to fix anything in it.

Hmmm....decisions, decisions.

I am using almost 2 quarts every 1k miles...I had some mobil left over from when I changed the oil in my CamaroSS...never really thought anything of it until now. I just assumed the LS2's burn more oil due to the higher compression ratio. My LS1 burned about a quart every 1500-2000 miles...

Might hav eto take the V back to the dealership and address the issue...here we go again!?!:banghead:

5k miles and I've burned maybe a little more than a quart here.

My '06 has used 2 quarts in 4500 miles.

Kaddony,

Sorry to hear your having more problems man.

Unfortunatly so am i...except this time...General Sales is not going to help me like they did last time. They told me to go to a different dealer when i called to get my rear inspected for the same symptoms as last time. Said the Area REp will not approve the diagnostics charge...

Good luck with them man...

I'm down almost a quart at 3600 miles. One quart every thousand sounds like a bit much...

I just had the rear refilled a couple of weeks ago (because it was overfilled). It's getting hard to tell on my already stained garage floor whether this has stopped the leaking or not.

One quart used in the first 5,000 miles on an '06. Rear is dry and clean. Life is good.

One quart in 2500 miles on my 06. Rear end occasionally leaks but not much or often. I have been pretty easy on the car. No burnouts, etc although I do tach it up fairly often. Sorry to hear about your problems. BTW I had a 98 and 01 STS which used a Quart every 800 to 1000 miles but never had any problems and I ran those cars hard.

I'm down about half a quart at 4200 miles
As an aside to this discussion, the dipstick in my 06 V appears to be the dipstick the owners manual describes as belonging to the V6 cts. Normal?

Guess I have been lucky, my 07’s 1st oil change was at 2,000 miles, maybe down ¼ quart, now 4,000 miles later negligible oil used.

I went real easy on the car for 1st 1,000 mile (man did that take restraint), maybe that is why I have been lucky with regards to oil consumption. 6,000 miles and counting, no problems yet, love my! V:2thumbs:

I too have the dipstick described in the owners manuel as belonging to the V6 cts. I do my own oil changes and the dipstick reads correctly, so no problem there.

you and your dealer are using mobil one right? what grade? what oil filter brand? what temperature does your car usually run? oil temp?

Somewhat new to the forum so sorry if this topic has been beaten to death:horse: , but for owners of 07V’s, selecting an oil filter can be a real pain in the butt.

The only oil filter listed to fit is the Delco pf 48; this oil filter was unique to the LS 7 engine in that it has an internal bypass valve in the oil filter.

GM changed the threads on the pf 48 filter so you would not be able to fit a pf46 style filter on that lacks the internal bypass valve (used to be in the oil pan).

The Mobile 1 and K&N filters listed for the LS2 will not fit, and the aftermarket currently does not make a filter for our 07 V’s, as the LS7 was such a limited production engine, the aftermarket did not run out and produce any filters, yet.

After spending some time checking filters (no local stores had any PF48’s and my car was in the garage with the oil drained and the old Delco filter was in the garbage. All I had on hand was a useless mobile 1 M1 107 filter:eek: , I was desperate).

After rummaging through all the oil filters at my local auto parts store, (cross reference charts were not updated for the 07 yet) it appears that the STP S10060 is the same exact filter as the Delco PF48, fits fine, same size body, internal valve and same metric threads.

I hope I have saved someone some grief on their first 07V oil change.

The 07 Vs do not have the LS7. They have the LS2, which is, by no means, a limited production engine (it resides in the engine bays of no less than 4 GM vehicles - the C6, the GTO, the Trailblazer SS, and the SSR).

The LS7, which is available only in the C6 Z06 (unless you have a severe case of bloated kahoonas and/or are c5racr1), is indeed a limited production engine.

So, I assume it's safe to say that you are referring to the LS2 oil filter and, in that case, you may have not only helped 07 V owners, but other 06 LS2 V owners as well (though it seems that issue has yet to crop up for any 06 owners - some other 06 owners may want to chime in to make sure all is well with the dilemma you ran into).

Or maybe you just got a factory mutant, which just happens to be a latent monster waiting to romp on any and everything Bavarian. Mmm, Mmm good. Have you had your M today? Or AMG for that matter? Heh. That'd be cool, wudn't it? Factory workers thought they'd have a laugh and drop in an LS7. Who's laughing now? Huh? Who's laughing? Me, bitch! Me! Mua-Ha-Ha-Ha! Muuua-Haaaa-Haaa-Haa-Ha! Ahhhh, yeah. Ummkay. I'm gohne back ta sleep now, 'kay? Move over women! I needs my beauty rest. Grumble.

I only wish GM made a mistake and dropped an LS7 in my V.:)

The 2007 C6 vettes with LS2’s I believe face the same oil filter issue as the V’s do, sadly there is no 07 GTO so no issue there, I assume the trailblazer and SSR will also have the same issue with oil filter fitment, but I'm not sure. However, I am sure the aftermarket will eventually offer a high end oil filter for the V, like a K&N or Mobile 1 ect…

Have a 06. Use K&N oil filter with no problems. Change the oil myself.

I just changed the oil last week for the first time at 6k miles.

I burned maybe 1/2 a quart. No leaking (or whinning) from my rear either (yet).

The type of oil consumption some of you guys are seeing is by no means normal. It's a sign of a bigger problem. This is the something GM should take very seriously, because its partly why Cadillac is still not on the same playing field with the elite luxary brands.

I have a 2006 LS2 with 1,100 miles on it and the oil is still at the full mark on the dip stick. Maybe it depends on how they are broken in. The rings have to seat which means they shouldn't be driven too hard the first 500 or so miles. If the rings don't seat properly it will consume a lot of oil.

Sadly, I just verified that I've rejoined the ranks of the drippy rear ends (new drippings on my garage floor) :rant2:

The "it was just overfilled" diagnosis sounded a bit too easy to me. Back to the service department...

There is a problem and I think GM is just buying time until they update the LS block again.

I drive the car what I consider normal. No smokey burnouts, I rarely ever tach the car to over 6k, but I do almost all back road driving and stop and go on it. The 7k miles are hard miles as it shows in an 11.5 MPG average.

I love this car but in no way should it be using oil that much. I could see a quart every 2k, but 1k? Where the hell is it all going? Through the rings?

And naiculnila, actually General Sales has been very good to me and they are apologetic and they really seem to care, I have no gripes with them. I know they fought to get my first engine replaced so I really feel they are on my side. But when GM lays down the law, they have no place to turn and hide.

I actually bought a drip mat for my garage floor and figure the rear will leak the entire time I own the car. This is not just our cars, the Pontiac Soltice is doing the same thing. Phoenix Auto is racing them and the owner told me every single car they have leaks fluid out the weep hole.
