View Full Version : Gas war

I just got this in my e-mail today. It might just work. Feel free to distribute it any way you desire.

Join the resistance!!!!

I hear we are going to hit close to $3.00 a gallon by the summer. Want
gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united
action. Phillip Hollsworth offered this good idea: This makes MUCH MORE
SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going
around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because
they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas.
It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them.
BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really
work.

Please read it and join with us!

By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super
cheap. Me too! It is currently $1.97 for regular unleaded in my town.
Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to
think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50- $1.75, we need
to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the
marketplace....not sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each
day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see
the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not
purchasing their gas!

And, we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How? Since we all rely on
our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas
prices if we all act together to force a price war.

Here! 's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline
from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If
they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If
they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.
But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers.

It's really simple to do!! Now, don't whimp out on me at this point...keep
reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to about thirty people. If each of you send it to,
at least, ten more (30 x 10 = 300) ... and those 300 send it to at least
ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000)..and so on, by the time the message reaches the
sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION
consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten
friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes
one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all. (If you
don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is
send this to 10 people.... Well, let's face it, you just aren't a
mathematician

But I am ... so trust me on this one.)

How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten
more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could
conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you I didn't
think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together we can
make a difference.

If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD OUT
UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK

well, that woudln't work, even if 3 million people stoppe dbuying form them it woudln't work.. I personally go to Citgo, they are the cheapest here....

...but one thing that cought my eye.... back in the days of Rockafellerwhen he owned Standard oil, and it all broke up, Exxon and Mobile became 2 branches.. .they recently united again and became 1... now you would think there woudl be a monopoly here, but why did the Gov't allow this? becuase Exxon and Mobile only account for 5% of all fuel sales... nothing will hurt at all from that deal.... I don't know how they can say that Exxon and Mobile are the 2 largest supliers, when in fact, out of the mainstream brands, they are the 2 lowest.... something to think about....

in realitly, if you complain about gas prices, or want them lower, simply do not drive as much... but you know you can't do that, we are Americans, we love to drive....

...last summer, when the prices went up, that didn't stop me.... and that was when I was making a hair over minum wage at KOA.... the cheap Citgo I go to, premium was topped at $1.94, but there were times I paid over $2/gallon.... I still put 7k miles on the DeVille in the 4 months it was on the road.... but gas prices, within reason don't bother me... the same idea goes for the whole 15cents of regular vs. Premium... the Cad requires it, the Olds (winter car) dosn't, but it dosn't like regular, so I run premium in it as well.... I have since put 3k miles on the Olds in the last 2 months or so it has been on the road.... damn.... I guess I love to drive :D

Both cars have an 18gal tank, but the Cad got 16-18mpg aorund town and 25-28 on the highway, the Olds with it's "small" 3800 V6 gets 19-20mpg around town, and... well, from the short highway trip I made, about 25mpg on the highway.. .it wasn't a long distanc though, and had some town driving, so I am sure it would be higher with a longer drive. That is also with a pretty heavv foot, I am always running WOT or near it when I accelerate with that... it has the same tranny as the DeVIlle (except vaccume, not electric) not sure what the FDR is, but it is also like 500lbs lighter.... and while the enigne dosn't make the power/tourqe of the V8, the car is pretty quick for what it is.... this is the Gen I 3800 so it is 170hp and 225ft lbs of tourqe....

I already don't go to mobile because they're prices are insane. about $2.35 for regular. The cheapest gas station in town is Exxon at $1.87 so i'm gonna have to stick with them.

I got advice for you elvis, please get off the internet before you hurt yourself. It's amazing the crap people believe and forward I fear some day people like you will be jumping off bridges in droves because of some email you got.

EDIT: The above post was kind of harshe but it was out of frustration, but seriously please turn down your ignorance a few notches

I Cobourg it is 74.9 per litre -3.78 l to US gallon and Super is 84.9 l that would be around $3.20 Cdn or $2.40 / US gallon.About 1/3 is taxes
Yes there is a different between Canada and US gallon.
That the price is one reason Canadians buy high % of small cars
But I have 5.3l 4x4 GMC (work truck)and STS so I do even look at the price and just pay.

Theres really no way to evade companies like Exxon... they feed petrol into over half of those "3rd party" gasoline stations and we have no option yet to buy from them.

I don't think Elvis is ignorant, he's an intelligent individual who would not like to see monopolies get too powerful, (as I) because if they do, then they can charge anything they want! If people don't take action sometimes, then monopolies or large businesses can and will walk all over you. I am NOT talking about overthrowing the government. They are businesses after all after only one thing, MONEY. Sometimes THEY get greedy. Something like this is just a mild form of protest, and it may make the oil companies realize peoples needs and/or concerns. Big companies love it when people have a defeatist attitude and do nothing. I'm quite certain that no one will be jumping off bridges over this one. :suspense:

GH, under the thread entitled "1990 Deville-premium gas question" in post #3, you state: "Todays gas prices are terrible, I can see why you want to switch to regular." My question might be to you, why complain if you're not willing to do something about it

I get "frustrated" when someone calls someone "ignorant" just for giving an opinion! And a damn good one at that! IMO.

We are 89 cents per litre!! (premium) :want: We have prices like this despite the fact that the news announced Sask. and Alb. have MORE OIL in the ground than Saudi Arabia!! Someone's screwing us! These Yanks just don't realize how lucky they are. :p

I think if we as a nation are going to be serious about conserving fuel, then we should stop letting liberals tell car companies how much MPG their fleet should get and just increase the frickin tax on gasoline. Nothing else will make the consumer change their habits. I know, people are supposed to be good and corporations are supposed to be evil. But you can slap the largest gas guzzler tax you want on any vehicle, but people with the money will just add that into their monthly payment.

Only when it becomes part of their daily out of pocket expenses, then good people will change their buying habits real fast. And the evil corporations will change faster than that!

"When I am elected president, I promise to raise gas taxes by $1.00, in order to promote fuel conservation and the rapid development of alternative fuels."

Don't worry, it'll never happen. Liberals are just like conservatives, they crave power too.

Gas Station Boycott Urged

A boycott of the gasoline stations of one oil company, ExxonMobil, is being urged by chain e-mails, aimed at forcing oil companies to dial down retail prices before a feared summer upsurge. The boycott suggestion may have originated with Florida retirees and seems to be circulating among old geezers. Maybe the young whippersnappers will buy into it, too.

The theory is that by putting retail sales-loss pressure on the largest gasoline supplier, the boycott target, that company will be forced to lower its prices, thus forcing competitors to do likewise. It is predicated on a rumor that retail prices may rise to $3 per gallon this coming summer.

Validity of the theory also depends on what really controls retail gasoline prices -- OPEC, oil importers, refiners, EPA requirements for local conditions, variations in state taxes and local competitive conditions among distributors and retailers.

However, should there be a virtual doubling of retail gasoline prices, it would likely result in much public hand-wringing, particularly in a presidential election year.

It'll be interesting to see what happens. After all, Detroit could again become the whipping boy, suffering from widespread but false beliefs that individual vehicle fuel economy has declined whereas what has actually happened is the public's growing appetite for less fuel-efficient cars, trucks and SUVs. So total fuel demand has grown, also abetted by more miles driven in more vehicles on the road. -Mike Davis

MY Ignorant comment was due to him posting an email forward. His ignorance was proved by believing what he read and actually posting it on the internet.

More ignorace was shown in actually believing people would read it and go "hmmm... I'm gonna do this".

I'm not saying this in a way where I look down on him, more like tough love, like me calling my sister an idiot or something.

Yup I complain about gas, but there isn't much you can do about it. You want the real deal, most gas is suppied by ONE company PHILLIPS (I believe) That FACT gets lost in the paper trail where after a few documents get recreated and it magically becomes eXXon or Mobil fuel.

Here is something that is even more upsetting The Super you are paying top dollar for a good portion of those gas stations when they over purchase regular make the driver dump in in the high and super tanks so they don't loose money.

I had a rude awakening when I was going on one night about how I only put Super in my Z and bla..bla..bla my friend let me know about all this because he runs a trucking company that transports fuel to local station. Needless to say I was very upset t know every time I fill up I may not be getting what I pay for.:annoyed:

I don't appreciate being told that I'm "ignorant" and I never said I actually believed it. I did say that it might just work. The REASON I said "I just got this in my e-mail" is that I naturally ASSUMED that intelligent readers would take it for what it was worth. Without judging ME first.

Certainly from a local standpoint it DOES work in theory--if you have four gas stations on a corner, and choose to do business with the "mom & pop" store rather than with Exxon, Mobil, or BP, THE BIG GUYS WILL LOWER THEIR PRICES TO COMPETE.

Thanks, Ralph, for getting my back. I've been on this forum practically since the beginning, and with very few minor exceptions I've never really been fired upon like that. Especially from a N00B. Take that crap back to a Nissan forum.

Why would anyone want to kill a giraffe anyway?

:) There is no need for you to explain why this was important to post... Take the time to read exactly how I meant what I said, instead of being so quick to snap back, if I succeeded in one thing with my post I hope you will be less niave if the near future. Ignorance was not meant as an insult, more like a wakeup call. People like you need to stop wasting other peoples valuable time by forwarding thousands of hoaxes back and forth via email and web forumz. There are sites you can go to look up this stuff and find out weather it's real or fake.

Giraffe}{unter is my nickname name not what I do. If I took your nickname seriously I would look at you as if you were an overweight druggie with sideburns, that likes to dress up in flashy satin outfits and shake your rump on the weekends. Who would want to do that.

As for taking my crap back to the Nissan fourm, I will be telling my mommy to report you to the AOL authorities for saying the "C" word :crybaby:

By the way, if you had taken the time to read post number three in this thread before launching your attack on my ignorance, maybe you would've seen that I had already been made aware that this was a hoax a couple of hours before you took it upon yourself to educate me.

Another user, Experiment626 very nicely posted the link that exposes the e-mail as a hoax MORE THAN 24 HOURS BEFORE YOU POSTED YOURS.

This is less about me or the validity of the e-mail that I copied here than it is about you trying to make a name for yourself and show off a little. I'm not playing with you anymore.
