Folks:

My blower motor works just fine, but for the past several months the fan has been annoyingly chirping on lower speeds, as though I have a cricket. It's the kind of thing that I'd instinctively first try to spray a little WD-40 in the right spot. But of course, 1). I can't get to it very conveniently and 2). Not knowing how these motors/fans are built, I don't know whether that would work anyway.

Is this something I could conceivably fix on my own, or would it require a replacement?

Thanks for any input!

Nope, time for a replacement. Mine started doing that about a year ago, and 3 or 4 months ago it started getting really loud. The bearings are going, time to buy a new one.

Dear 90 Brougham:

I absolutely appreciate the reply -- but earlier this afternoon I THINK I solved it! Thanks to the indispensable service manual, I decided to take a look at the blower motor. For some reason I had become convinced that even getting to it would be a problem -- but nope, it's at the top-center of the firewall in the engine compartment. After removing six small bolts with a rachet, I was able to tilt it out to discover -- a styrofoam peanut in the fan cage!! I removed it -- and tried to remove the entire assembly just to try a little WD-40 in case the peanut wasn't the cause. But to do that, you have to get a rachet inside the cage and remove a nut holding it to the motor. I just couldn't get any of my sockets to fit, so gave up and remounted the motor. VOILA!! Noise SEEMS to be gone. Now, I know it will take a few days of driving/blower ops to convince me of that -- but for now, I believe things are fine. :2thumbs:

And don't we all know the dealer would have insisted the motor had gone bad??? :ripped:
