Considering buying a 76 Fleetwood...

Notes on the car:
1. Used to be fuel injected, but converted to carburator
this seems to be a common thing for this car (based on ads I've seen)

2. Paint - fresh paint job with clear coat. No tape marks, bubbles, drips, runs
etc.

3. Mechanically (at least from what I know so far) is that it is running
perfectly with (2) exceptions: the ac doesn't blow cold - seller mentioned
it may need a compressor, and the cruise control doesnt' work. Seller
mentioned it may be a fuse - but not sure.

4. New exhaust, good tires, interior is in good condition. Only crack is a small
one on top of the dash. Cloth interior, no rips, carpet is in good condtion,
interior wood also in good condtion. Trunk looks good, couldn't find any
rust spots (although I didn't take a peek under the car yet.)

5. Mileage - 95,000. Seller is the third owner and doesn't belive there was
any major work done to the motor or tranny, and says he didn't see any
evidence of body repair work when he had it repainted (6) months. ago.

I'm new to classic / older car buying market - this would be my first for my wife. Seller is asking $6,000.00 for it - do you think it's a fair price?

No. Half that is a fair price. If the car were in flawless condition, then maybe 6k would be acceptable.

30 years old though... Might be worth a bit.

davesdeville is right. Old Cadillacs aren't worth a lot. If I was going to pay $6,000 for one it better be nice.

Well according to NADA, the price range for a '76 Fleetwood Sixty Special Brougham is $2650-$8650. Judging by your comments, it sounds like a car in average-good condition, which means, according to them it's a 6-7k car.

Personally, I'd offer $3750. When you think about what you're getting, $3750 seems like a steal.

My Dad sold his '76 Fleetwood factory Limo for $5500 and it was mint!

They are asking too much for that car.

Jeez, now's the time to get a '70s cruiser I guess!

Now is definately the time. I don't see them getting any cheaper from here on.

Buddy and I came across a 72 Fleetwood here in Toronto the other day. Asking was like $2200 or something. And it was a good honest 22K mile car. Only thing we could find was a couple rust bubbles and non-working passenger power seat.

We liked it but we each decided we didn't need any more big boats. My buddy gave him the old I'll take it for $800 here's-my-number routine for good measure, but no bite yet.

This car was somewhat celebrity-owned to boot. I'll bet it's still there. Seriously there is no demand for these cars. Best strategy is give a stink offer and leave your number. Keep doing it and someone will call you back eventually.

Harsh... but why pay too much?

What this car is worth is up to you. I've owned 70+ cars, alot of them Cadillacs, and paid what I felt was fair every time. There is no market for an old Cadillac except for the people that use this forum, and maybe a few others. I have a 78 Fleetwood Brougham that I have invested over 8 large in, and know I will never get that back, however the thrill of getting in it whenever I want and driving it on a 500 mile round trip without having a problem is priceless.

I paid $2,700 for my EFI '76 Fleetwood 8 years ago, and it sounds like the same condition as the one you are describing. My car had leather seats though. So, I agree that $6k is way too much!
Also, the interior "wood trim" is plastic. It just looks good! :)
