Hi, I'm a new member, my name is Brandt. Lately I have been considering purchasing a new cadillac. But I have this fear that I cannot seem to overcome. lol. my fear is of it's transmission.

when I was 16 and 19 i owned two cars. they were both Ford's.. and between both of them I had to buy 3 different transmissions. as u can imagine this put a VERY Bitter taste in my mouth in regards to ANY Ford vehicles.

later on I heard that Cadillac uses Ford transmissions.. and so I refused to even consider buying a caddy.

im wondering if there is any truth to this, is there ANY link between Cadillac and Ford? Any at all??

and after answering that, what experiences have any of you had with cadillac transmissions?

all i know is that Cadillac is a subdivision of General Motors.. but then again so is Chevy and GMC vehicles, which I am also considering.

anyways.. whuddya think... any links between Ford and Cadillac?

thanx for any help,

Brandt

Hi Brandt. Welcome to the board. There's a lot of good people here.

You don't have to worry about any connection between Cadillac and Ford. There's only one and that's the fact that a fellow named Henry Leland started Cadillac and later on started Lincoln. That's pretty much it.

I've owned one Ford in my life and it's the last one I'll ever own. Unless, of course someone wants to give me a GT40.

Why would a GM use a Ford transmission when there are other GM models to use a transmission from? No, there's no Ford transmission in a Cadillac.

I guess everyone deals with cars in the same way. We've hardly ever had GMs for the same reason. The only reason why I drive a Cadillac is because I like some of them.

The Lincoln LS and Cadillac CTS use versions of the same transmission from Getrag. Other than Getrag and Lincoln, there is no connection between Cadillac and Ford.
I believe that the transmissions mated to the Northstar engines (transverse and transaxle) are unique to those engines (at least I don't recall them ever being used by another brand).

I've had better luck overall with GM I think than any other of the Big 3. The only transmission I've had to rebuild was in the 1980's on my 1978 Dodge Monaco, but I don't know how the previous owner treated it. I've put my 1980 Pontiac through hell and back, and never any engine or transmission problems! The Mercury I've had kinda cost me too much money here and there, and I got tired of it. That Merc was always cared for and I had all the records of maintenance from the previous 2 owners.

Great responses.. thanx! Then I will try to reprogram my brain to accept Cadillacs. I am in love with the 2004 Escalade. I never did know much about cars, and I still don't. But for some strange reason earlier on in life I associated a Cadillac with Ford.. because they are both under GM. I can see that's silly now though. It's either a Escalade or Yukon Denali.

thanx guys,

Brandt

Ford is it's own company. It isn't owned by GM.
Ford -----> Lincoln
GM ------> Cadillac

Welcome and I hope you end up with a Cadillac. You won't be disappointed. :)
