So.... I'm not making any promises, but I might be trying to acquire a specific black vehicle that is powered by a 472. Can someone tell me if there's anything I should know about this engine?

Ok, enough beating around the bush... That black '69 Sedan de Ville I looked at last summer and practically tried to have sex with is still there and still for sale and I STILL WANT IT! Now... I stopped in today and the price if my memory serves me correctly has actually gone up to $4,700 from the $4,000 it was last June. It has 130k and is immaculate with little signs of age. What kinda offer should I throw at him? Keep in mind this car has been up for sale for over a year now and still hasn't moved. Should I do the ol' bring it to a mechanic and turn up a buncha price negotiable problems trick? I know in my own conscious mind that the price is insane so what would you expect to pay for this car?

The pics from last June because why not?

If that was closer to me I'd buy it! I love that bodystyle, and from what I've seen and heard, the 472 is a beast.

Well speaking from experience, its extremely reliable, extremely powerful, and extremely thirsty like everyone else said. It wants the highest octane you can give it and it often still pings slightly under the wrong conditions unless you retard the crap out of it; but I'm still looking into getting mine to run absolutely perfectly so hopefully it'll stop pinging at the top end soon. It's not far off perfect now, its pretty danged smooth and doesn't ping very often, but not perfect.

Anyway that looks like a beauty, with that many miles the price needs to be waaaaay lower though... I got my 1970 with 92000 miles for 1500 Canadian, it needed paint but 4700 is unreasonable for that car. I hope you can convince the owner to sell for less.

Is there a reason you don't put the money into your current beautiful Brougham? I'm always trying to buy cars I shouldn't be buying too... :D If I remember you were needing a valve job and maybe a whole engine rebuild?

That '69 would suit you though Dope!

As for mileage, I'd expect about 9MPG city and 15 highway.

Screw the gas, it's not like she'd be a daily driver. And even if that were the case, who cares? She's gorgeous. Buy it!

As the ad below says, "the spendlor of the most special occasion is rivaled only by the pleasure of journeying there in a Cadillac."

Oh, this Caddy has it all over that Town Car. It even has subtle tail fins. No offense, Chad. I just like Caddies way better than Lincolns.

Funny you mention that, that's how I got my Fleetwood from $3,500 to $2,200. :lildevil:

I would love to get it. I juist started a new job that pays close to $240 a week so it's not too farfetched. I offered the guy $1,000 last summer and he turned me down. I dunno what to offer now......

I'd say $2400 would be a resonable offer to start with. I mean, what's the worst thing he can say: No.

I looked up the value for a '69 Sedan de Ville at Nada Guides (http://www.nadaguides.com/default.aspx?LI=1-22-1-5013-0-0-0&l=1&w=22&p=1&f=5014&c=14&m=1032&d=253&y=1969&vi=64992&z=97351&da=-1), the only site I'm aware of that has prices for classic cars. What he's asking is in line with what the car is worth based on the pictures.

For anybody interested in buying a classic car, I highly recommend looking up the NADA Guide; you may find the car you want is a real bargain, or the seller may be hosing you. You can also look up a specific year, make and model at Hemmings Motor News (http://www.hemmings.com) to see the range of asking prices. I think there's also an Old Cars Price Guide at bookstores, but I don't know if there's an online equivalent.

Keep us posted, Dope. If he's not ready to sell at the price you're offering right now, make sure he has your name and phone number. He may call you down the road to make you an offer. I've know people who got nice classics that way.

No offence taken. Before driving that '77, I would have taken a '70s Lincoln over a '70s Cadillac any day of the week, but I was actually kinda disappointed how that car drove. Just like the '90s Town Cars, it felt much much larger than it looks. In the ride-handling balance, Town Cars (and most Lincolns) always leaned towards the ride, Cadillacs offer the better balance. They don't ride *quite* as well, but they handle oh so much better! I'm pretty sure that I'd take a '76 Coupe deVille over a '76 Town Coupe any day of the week now, and...

Yes, that means I'd rather have a '77-'78 Eldorado Biarritz over a Mark IV!

I drove a '78 Toronado, and I remember that thing handling quite well considering how large it was. It never felt like a mammoth like the '77 TC did, and the Toronado and Eldorado share the chassis and most of the drivetrain (sans motor). So unless the Mark IV drives a lot smaller than the Town Car, I'll take the Eldorado!

Driving a lincoln is like driving a f**king waterbed - guess why said that.

That is from "Donnie Brasco", I think Al Pacino's charachter said that.

That's pretty much the best way to sum up driving a Lincoln. Bouncy, bouncy, bouncy..

Bingo, but I can't remember who said it, been a while since I've seen it. :D

But I still think that complite lack of feeling is sort of cool, because everybody else wants their car to handle like a rock on wheels.

It's cool to an extent, the level of isolation in a '70s Lincoln is downright scary at times.
I hope the '70s Cadillacs aren't as isolated, but going by everything I've read on them, they aren't.

If everything's in perfect shape $4k might be acceptable. I'd start with a 2500 offer.

It's really not though. If I remember from last summer there's a few blemishes, a hole in the trunk seems to stick out in my memory. Here's the first thread I made about this car.....

I had a '74 Fleetwood with a 472 and it was not fast but it did pull the big boat just fine and I loved the sound of the old quadrajet at WOT. Of course the '74 was a smog motor so the '69 would be much quicker.

I~LUV~Caddys8792
09-24-06, 10:58 PM
Yup, plenty of power, but not fast. The '74 was 205hp net with 365 lb/ft. The '69 is 375hp gross, and 525 lb/ft gross. Roughly, in net terms that's around 280hp and 425 lb/ft if I had to guess.

The '69s will do 0-60 in the 8 second range, the '74s do it in around 10 seconds.
