On my 93 FWB L05 350.

I have a mystery coolant leak. Once a week or so the low coolant light comes on and it's low. I couldn't find the leak anywhere so I took it to the dealer. They're telling me the intake gasket is leaking and the coolant is running down the side of the block.

Is that possible? Intake leaking coolant outside the engine? Just seemed odd to me.

Well, I suppose it's possible, but only after the coolant pooled a little on the manfold and either ran down the front or the back of the block, the valve-covers wouldn't let it down the side obviously. Maybe he meant head gaskets.

Intakes can leak like that and its a normal problem on those engines. But if it's leaking that much you should be able to see it.

I verified intake and not head gasket. The dealer told me that there are water jackets toward the outside edge of the manifold and can breach to leak coolant. Weird.

I didn't crawl under the car because I haven't had the time but I did look around the engine bay quite carefully and saw nothing.

I can't complain, the engine has 190k on it. I guess I'll just do the work and fix it right.

Thanks

Intake leaks are common on almost every GM engine.
