I have a 96 Fleetwood, and just got a new HU with CD. What's the easiest way to pull the one that's in there? Looks like screws based on the unit I got. How do I get to them?

Here you go, with pictures of every step:

LayItLow.com Gary's 1995 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham (http://www.layitlow.com/members/TheOtherOne/radio.shtml)

I've been in there about 5 or 6 times now, and by far, the hardest part is just getting the wood strip to unclip. Took me a while the first time, because I kept thinking it was going to break, but it didn't. Just get a fairly large flat headed screwdriver, and work your way along the bottom edge--you should be able to get a feel of where the clip points are. Only issue from there, that I always have, is the little green clips fall off the plastic stubs on the backside of the strip and into oblivion, but I've been able to find one or two of them from time to time with some searching.

Beyond that, it's all just screws...you'll need a 7mm socket:thumbsup:

This is a holdover. I have aftermarket plans, but it's a major step up. I want $120 for the factory unit.

Try here:
Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market (http://www.car-part.com)
and search for just '96 (since they're different, as you know) Fleetwood CD/cassette units, and a bunch should come up at different salvage places. It's where I found mine, and quite cheaply.

But I too have similar issues. Went from a perfect cassette only unit to a CD/cassette that worked perfect when first put in, then it started acting funny. Has trouble sucking CD's in fully after the first try, and they need a extra push (I use a credit card), and then the cassette stopped ejecting normally after about a month. Have to leave it in there for about half an hour, then randomly hit eject again and it will pop out...usually.

But for what I paid, it was cheap, and sitting on a shelf in a salvage center for a while, it was still worth it.

That, and I wanted to keep it all stock and as easy as possible. These 2 minor issues are still annoying, and I'd like to eliminate them, but rather than buy another used OEM one, an aftermarket is finally looking more tempting.

Actually, if it weren't for the mess (relatively) involved with getting an aftermarket done properly in a Fleetwood, I'd have done it already. Right now, this one has been looking most attractive to me:

JVC Mobile Entertainment \ Productline CD / Cassette Receivers (http://mobile.jvc.com/product.jsp?productId=PRD6000002&pathId=63)

Double-din sized and with CD/cassette, PLUS is satellite ready AND has an Aux. jack on the face like a lot of new OEM head units.

Wish it wasn't such a mess to get one in and working, though...or if someone who has done it would be so gracious as to make up a list of EVERYTHING needed specifically (wires, what length, what brand, etc.) and some basic step by step instructions.

I thought it would be better (and easier) to buy a CD changer-with MP3 capability- with a wired remote control (FM modulator to minimize hookups). The changer could stay in the trunk where the hookups are at anyway...

A couple of changers I was checking out at Crutchfield had remotes that were 20 feet long or so, plenty to run in the door jambs up to the driver's seat area. This way only need to run one single wire for the remote, plus it keeps the factory original look (and the head unit never has to be pulled from the dash). With MP3 capability I'd never run out of music to listen to.
I found one for about $260ish IIRC

Really? Hmm...never thought of that. I'm intrigued, especially since it's so easy compared to everything else.

Well, it is more pipe dreams than anything else at this point. My mod money is really low right now and for the forseeable future, LOL.
I have an old Kenwood CD deck already that would go in before my wife would let me spend more moolay right now. :bigroll:

I looked into it a couple of months back -- I used Crutchfield as my source or research because they listed on their website details about the accessories included with each changer so I'd know what the length of the remote wire is.
I would go with a wireless remote changer maybe (if available?) but not sure that with all connections and the changer in the trunk would it the remote register and be functional? Hmmmm...

Ehh, actually, I think I'd still rather just have a well installed aftermarket head unit or just a completely functioning stock one--the latter probably being what I'll stick with in the end, just because I enjoy music in the car, but not to the extent that I'd spend a lot on upgrading a system.

The CD changer idea still might work well, though, especially since they were a relatively common (at least older ones) install in these cars from new.
