View Full Version : AHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Finally! 440 Challenger!!! It's in! Still need to do a lot of accessories and external stuf...water pump, distributor, fans and pulleys and alternator and exhaust and ignition and such, but it now sits in its home. Looks damned good too, if you ask me. The guy in the white shirt I recruited to help guide it in...That's me in the black reaching down to tighten down the mounts. Drivers door is almost finished, passenger I'm working on today, will be done in an hour or three. crap...screwed that up...I have to resize them, then I'll get the pics up. urbanski 09-10-06, 05:48 PM use imageshack.us
and check the box to resize the pics when you upload them :) Lets see if this works. I've already put a few of them on photobucket... ok...edited and got it to work after a few tries.
This is what I started with.

I wish I had a better picture of the underhood detail. It looks GOOD, but this'll hafta do.

The engine. You can't see some of the finer details...but the intake end rails are engraved with "440 Mopar" and each bolt that you can see is a chromed bolt with the Mopar "M" logo on it.

Final tighten down of the mounting bolts.

The car.

The engine has finally found its way home. From a '68 Charger to a bad ass speed boat to an in-progress Challenger.
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i4/spyder1200/Challenger/Challenger020.jpg NICE! man that thing is sweet! congrats! Yea, its still a looong way from being close to done. Ignition, fuel system, carburetor, exhaust, flexplate and torque converter and all the little bits and pieces that I have to figure out and make work since this car never came with a big block. The power disk brakes are totally rebuilt, the transmission is brand new and ready to be installed whenever I find a crossmember, the interior is coming along nicely and the body is actually very straight. Rear end is a posi but I want to run 3.55s in it instead of the 3.23's I believe it is now. We'll see...it'll be a LOT of time, money and work, but it'll kick ass when I'm done! gdwriter 09-10-06, 07:26 PM Nice work, James. I remember the feeling when I was putting Betty's engine back in after the rebuild six years ago. Good luck with the rest of the work; as you said, there's a lot left to do.

http://www.gdwriter.com/images/ethel.jpg urbanski 09-10-06, 07:28 PM sounds like you'll be done about the same time they release the new one :p ;) Hell...the new one'll be out long before I'm done with this one...but I'll have one of each, so it'll be alright! :D codewize 09-10-06, 09:15 PM That don't look like no Northstar to me :hmm:
Nice car :) Can't wait to see it complete. Ha...The one and only Northstar I ever had I blew up. Ma Mopar will never let me down! :) RobertCTS 09-11-06, 09:01 AM I went thru all that with a '65 Corvette. I put a ton of work in the engine not to mention $5000 for a paint job. I also installed a 4:11 posi in it. Dam that car screamed!! Wish I had it back. I have a doggie '72 Corvette convertible now. I'd redo the engine with a HP cam and heads but it would destroy the resale value. I did repaint it and replace bad parts and chrome..
http://usera.imagecave.com/BobsWork/VetteII.jpg dbdartman 09-11-06, 09:01 PM A tip & a warning.
First the warning: Be prepared for the hard-core Mopar folk to complain about "the Chevy guy that built a Mopar" comments because of the black engine compartment that should be body color.
Now, the tip: When it comes time to install the flex plate & converter, lay the plate on the converter, line up all 4 bolt holes (one is off-set!) & spray paint ONE ear of the flex plate making sure to over-spray the converter. THEN bolt the flex plate to the crank. Once it's together, just line up the painted ear to the converter & you avoid bolting & unbolting trying to get it lined up correctly.
Another tip: when you install the converter, be sure the mounting lugs on the converter are at least 3/4" BEYOND the plane of the bell housing (lay a straight edge across the B'housing to engine surface, lugs should be 3/4" or more back). If they are not that far back, the converter is not seated fully & you WILL break the trans pump & maybe even bend the converter snout when you pull the trans to the block with the bolts!
BTW, G4 is one of my favorite colors on E-bodies, but not real popular (everyone seems to want purple, yellow & lime green ones :bonkers: ).
What cam? Headers or manifolds? Carb?
Good luck! :cool2: G4...? I SHOULD know this, I know, but I don't. I'm thinking Plum Crazy, black on black with a black vinyl top or the bad-ass pink color on that I've seen many times on the Challengers. Not sure which yet, but I like it. AND, I don't care about the Chevy guys giving me crap about the non-body color engine bay because I'm not sure what color the body will be and I really lie the Hemi orange on black. I like it, that's what matters. :) Not actually too sure of the cam...'tis a hardly used motor out of a boat...that was a ridiculously fast speed boat from a mopar buddy of mine. Yes, thank you for the tips, I shall use them...and I shall re-read this and respond p[roperly when there's much less beer flowing in my kitchen and much less Van Morrison on the CD Player...g'night to you for now. :) | |
