I was surfing around for desktop wallpapers and came across this gem of a site:
Cord Automobile --- 1936 Cord and 1937 Cord (http://www.automaven.com/index.html)

It details the history and engineering behind the Cord 810/812 sedans and convertibles. There's also a really neat photo gallery of when they took a 1930s Cord through the desert on Route 66.

My wife's grandpa had one. It was a 'vert. Her aunt did a nice painting based on a picture of the wife's grandparents posing by it. Needless to say, I love th painting because is has a car in it.

Oh, and it isn't the best looking car ever. The 90+ Nissan 300 twin turbo and the Ferrari F40 are. It is a fact. Look it up.

The Z32 is among the best looking sports cars made, I'll grant you that, but the F40 isn't on the same level in terms of style.

It has been said that the '66 Toronado was designed to look like the Cord 812. I saw a '66 Toronado at a car show I went to today and let me say that car is gorgeous!! I never thought that much of it in books and stuff, but seeing one in person is so nice! It might just be the best looking personal luxury car ever.

I have lusted after Cords most of my life - I had the chance to buy one 30 years ago, but never could come up with the $$$$ they wanted. And now they are so far out of my reach that I'd need a rich relative to pass away and leave me his/her fortune (ain't never gonna happen, either).

I also passed up a Hudson Terraplane that was in need of a TOTAL makeover, but had all the rare chrome bits in the interior and trunk. They wanted 2 grand for it, but it would have needed at least 20 grand to come back to factory-fresh-cherry.

AAAAAAAHHHHHH, the memories.

Great sites, guys. I will peruse at my leisure at a later date.

My grandfather had a '66 Toronado. White with black interior. Absolutely beautiful. He got one of the first ones in the Memphis area, pre-ordered it. The Olds dealer was one of his best friends.

He sold it to a paraplegic friend who had it converted to a hand throttle and brake. He wanted that particular car because the space behind the seat was accessible to slide his wheelchair in it. He didn't need any assistance getting in and out.

My grandfather then bought a '69 Toronado in the same color. A year or two later he had to quit driving because his arthritis was so bad.

Saw a 1938 Cord when I was 16, working at an A & W. Hands down one of the most breathtaking cars ever built.

People always talk about the Tucker and the Edsel being so far ahead of their time, but the Cord really was. Hideaway headlights, front drive, power assisted hydraulic brakes - in 1937! Designed, engineered, and built by hand in Indiana.

The great depression/WWII killed a lot of great car makers.

Seeing that Toronado really made me want one. I went home and looked up all of the early Toronados, and the only one I really like is the 1966 model. 1967 was nice too, but it had different wheel covers. But in '68, they changed the grille and the rear window, and by '70, it was only a shadow of it's former self, and '71 was the new model of elephantine proportions.

My friend Evan's dad had a '68 Toronado back in the mid '70s. He loved that car enough to keep the grille, bumper, licence plates and the owners manual when he junked that car because of the rust issue it had. If you mention the words "Oldsmobile" or "Toronado" to him, he'll go off on this 30 minute spiel on how great that car was.

Damnit I really want one now, or a '68 Eldorado.

I agree that the '66 Toronado is a great looking car. A Ferrari Lusso is also gorgeous. I read that article in Automobile and there is some good stuff in there but there are so many other cars to pick from. What about a "boat tail" Riviera?

I really don't like many '30s cars, but I really like that Cord. It's so modern looking for it's time!

the outside of most fo the stuff from the 30s never did alot for me , cords , peirce and the like i always loved ...but most fo the high end stuff back then had some really interesting powertrains in them ....

that cord was front wheel drive , there was even 3 of them rebuilt with offenhouser engines somewhere around 1935 (the engines i mentioned more then a few times around here)

Yeah, the '30s sure were the age of excess! 11-12 liter I-8s in the Bugattis and Hispano-Suizas. Those were amazing cars! If I could find some good pics of them, I'll post them.
