View Full Version : Temp Gauge DopeStar 156 09-09-06, 05:14 PM What's involved in installing a temperature gauge? I'm thinking about installing one and putting it right next to the gas gauge. (Where the roll over clock used to be on the '77 models) How hard would it be to find one that is even that size? I want this to look as is it came from the factory with the temp gauge. FASSTWOOD 09-09-06, 08:37 PM I wish i had a pic of my blue fleetwod but try putiing them by the dash on the right. they will fit nice there... I had oil pressure and water temp there along with the rpm gauge on the left...

As far as mechanical installation goes for the sender (or thermocouple) it is pretty straightforward.
Gen one engines usually have provisions for a sender in the top of the intake manifold somewhere - there should be a fitting (pipe plug) that you remove so you can add a sender.
Most mechanical temp gauges are really cheap (like $10) at parts stores and come with a variety of plumbing fittings so you can add it to various locations on the engine. Be sure to use thread sealant (aka pipe dope) so you don't have coolant leaks.
Another location is in the side(s) of the heads near the spark plug locations. There may be a fitting (plug) that can be removed and a sender added. This usually needs a torch though to free it up and turn it loose.
Basically you are looking for a coolant system passage to insert a probe that will relay the temp back to the gauge. You will need to route the sender through the firewall and into the driver's side area. Be sure to keep sender lead away from moving and hot parts. :bighead: Benzilla 09-12-06, 05:06 AM My '79 has a temp gauge under the center ashtray, looks clean. Nice to have too. DopeStar 156 09-12-06, 05:43 AM Ooh actually... what about inside the ash tray? I've wanted to convert that thing into something useful, maybe a mounting for an MP3 player or something..... Benzilla 09-12-06, 05:57 AM That would be cool, but I'm keeping mine.
Nice size place to put an Ipod though.. Un-used ashtrays make excellent candy holders,,,,,or spare change holders for toll roads, squeegee kids, bums, tramps, slack-arses, anyone looking for a free hand-out, whatever,,,,,,. Benzilla 09-12-06, 08:05 PM Whats the point of being in a Cadillac if you give handouts? lol, we're supposed to look down on street scum and zoom off leaving them in a cloud of stones and dust... j/k, but it would be fun.
I just like knowing that my car was build during an era where you could actually smoke without having 100 tree huggers on your ass for killing the earth. I mean 4 lighters and ashtrays per car, Rolls Royce doesn't even have that! Rick186 09-12-06, 11:42 PM Does anybody make A-Pillar pods for that body style like they do for the 93 to 96 FWB (actually Impala) like I already got from J'EGS along with the 3 gauges I haven't gotten around to installing in my '95?? DopeStar 156 09-13-06, 01:17 AM I really hate iPods and will hopefully never buy one, however I wanna get some form of MP3 player and store it in the ash tray. Something useful will go in there. 1990CaddyBrougham 09-13-06, 09:37 PM Id like to put a temp gauge in the Brougham too. Aside from a non power, no way to recline ever passenger seat on the base models, not having a temp gauge is ****ing retarded. Benzilla 09-13-06, 10:06 PM You can't recline the base seats? damn. 1990CaddyBrougham 09-14-06, 09:52 PM Nope. WHen i bought it i didnt know it was like that. its a ****ing cadillac, it should have power seats standard. i would have settled for a lever on the side... but nope, nothing. i dont know how to decode the tag in the trunk, but if the caps are original, i think the only option was the wire wheels. Rick186 09-14-06, 11:50 PM NONONONONO!
Nothing to do with Apple's silly little iPod!
I'm talking about the thing that fits against the pillar on the left side of the windshield.
My wife already matched the interior cloth and we covered the grey plastic with the 3 holes for the 3 digital gauges (water temp, oil pressure, oil temp.) and I hope to wire up the whole shebang in the near future. Benzilla 09-14-06, 11:59 PM He wasn't talking to you... Rick186 09-15-06, 12:02 AM Sorry,
I was answering DopeStar's reply to me on the previous page and I guess it ended up here.
Say???? How did the topic switch from gauges???? Benzilla 09-15-06, 01:17 AM Say???? How did the topic switch from gauges????
That happens a lot here lol. pimpin88 09-15-06, 03:04 PM Id like to put a temp gauge in the Brougham too. Aside from a non power, no way to recline ever passenger seat on the base models, not having a temp gauge is ****ing retarded.
aww, thats sad, except for the fact that i cant recline EITHER front seat. wtf were they thinking :rant2: . it sucks so much. 90Brougham350 09-15-06, 03:37 PM Most 80-year olds aren't gonna recline the seats up at Lover's Lookout. Benzilla 09-15-06, 04:12 PM All of mine recline :p pimpin88 09-15-06, 06:08 PM Most 80-year olds aren't gonna recline the seats up at Lover's Lookout.
LMAO!!
All of mine recline :p
and you, you, i dont know, you just shut up. lol. :thepan: DopeStar 156 09-16-06, 01:00 AM I was actually respinding to Benzilla's post about putting an ipod in the ashtray. I~LUV~Caddys8792 09-16-06, 04:28 PM Both of my front seats recline, sure they're manual, but they're faster than the power ones! My Roadie had the power recliners, those were nice too. That '77 Town Car and '84 Sedan deVille I drove didn't have reclining front seats, and I thought that was retarted! What if the seats aren't comfortable from the factory? Then what! Luckily, they were, so I was alright with that. DopeStar 156 09-17-06, 03:55 AM Mine recline, except my driver's seat. They're both power recliners, I guess my seat is broken somewhere. Switch or motor is shot.... | |
