Hello All, I've recently been trying to figure out the history of my 69 Coupe deVille (no real reason why, just thought it'd be interesting)... Right now I'm wondering how to decode the VIN to figure out what plant it was made at... J9248663 is the VIN and I haven't had any luck finding out what the code means... Google searches bring up tons of CHEVY VIN decoders and such, but none for Cadillac... :helpless:

So far I think J=Cadillac?, and 9=1969... After that its all just numbers to me... :confused:

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks much!

Thats the one on the dash right? That one doesn't really tell you much of anything. The J is acutally a sales code for the car's bodystyle.

M= Fleetwood Sixty Special Sedan
P= Fleetwood Brougham Sedan
N= Calais Hardtop Sedan
G= Calais Coupe
B= Hardtop Sedan Deville
J= Coupe Deville
F= Deville Convertible
L= Sedan Deville
H= Fleetwood Eldorado
R= Fleetwood Seventy-Five Sedan
S= Fleetwood Seventy-Five Limousine
Z= Commercial Chassis

The Second digit is model year, and the last six are production sequence, starting with 100001.

For finding more info on your car, you can try this: http://www.cadillaclasalleclub.org/authenticate.shtml (I just LOVE that little bold disclaimer) And I would Highly Recommend a Factory Service Manual. That is where I got the VIN info. I also have the style numbers (not exactly useful on a different model year), the algorithm for generating the code for your keys, And some ways to tell about stuff that may have been done to your engine at the factory (i.e. an asterisk in a certian spot indicates a .010 oversize bore, an L.C. indicates low compression overseas motor, and so forth)

Acutually, this has been bugging me for awhile. Does anyone know WHY Cadillac Historical Services can pull records for a 1903 Cadillac, all the way to 1970 BUT cannot do anything for a 1968? :suspect: What was up with Caddy in 68? I know of a major strike that year (21 days) but was that the reason?

I'm not sure about the 1968 issue... That is quite odd...

I just had an idea... would it be possible to get a list of previous owners from my local DMV? I should think that they'd have everything documented... but I'm not 100% sure.

Thanks Dave for the info :) much appreciated... I think I might've gotten the accessory codes from the body tag too...

Accessory: 03B-EY--S---K

B =
E = E-Z-Eye/Soft-Ray Glass ($50)
Y = 6-Way Power Front Seat ($120)
