: Transmission Problem

I have 94 Eldo. 105,000 miles. It has been running warmer than normal. This has done this the last 2 weeks.

Today the service engine light came on, and the transmission stayed in 2nd or 3rd gear, would not shift. When I check the fluid, it looks like it is boiling. It's not burnt or brown.. When vehicle is cools down, the transmission works fine and the engine light is off. The problem returns when car is ran for 10 to 20 minutes.

Got any idea what my problem could be? :bigroll: Thanks for any and all help.

Have you pulled the DTC's? Sounds like a shift solenoid failure.

I think the most likely cause is shift solenoids sticking.

There are threads with instructions on how to change them yourself. Parts about $50. Labor to have done $200-500.

punish,

I had that EXACT problem. I might be running down the road at 30, 50 or 70 MPH, and then she'd drop into second and the check engine light would come on. I could kill and then restart her and then she'd work fine for a short period (less than 10 miles).

Unfortunately I didn't come to this forum and look for the threads; I took her to the dealer and he replaced the shift solenoids. He didn't bother to grease up with any vasoline first either; $500. So, if you're willing to give it a try yourself, you can save a bundle.

Would the shift solenoid, cause the car the run hotter than normal, when the transmission is shifting fine? It shifts as smooth as it possible, until the temp climbs.

No, the opposite is true. Heat can cause the solenoid to stick. It is cracked or worn at this point.

There is a kit that adds a small bracket to hold the filter in place. If it comes loose it will break the solenoids. It was added about 96 to all new trans's. The kit includes new solenoids.

Do you have to pull transmission to do this?

No, search for the posts that have the instructions. I'm not sure if it's in tech tips. If not it should be put there.

the code should be PO94 and Po29 solinoid "A" and "B" Resp.
