I am about to buy a 05 that has been switched to Bridgestones and happens to currently need new rubber. What are you guys doing for a spare if you have moved away from the run flats? Is there a steel wheel that will fit over the brakes and will a replacement wheel/tire fit in the spare compartment? Don't want to be in BFE with a flat stuck waiting for a 245/45/18 to be shipped in from a major city.

I switched to GS-D3's in March. I carry a small compressor and a plug kit. For long trips I will carry a can of Fix-A-Flat, it will ruin the tire pressure sensor but is better than being stuck somewhere that doesn't have cell service. I also have a Corvette with non-runflats on it and it has 55,000 miles on it, 3 trips coast to coast. I have picked up screws and have never had to use anything, the tire sealed around the screw. I was able to get to a tire shop before I needed air.

I have a spare wheel (actually 5) and have not done the thing to the tub to make it so I can put a fullsize spare in it.

Thanks. I try the search function and nothing ever comes up. Don't know why.
Any idea what a used wheel should run? I bet they are not cheap. Was hoping for a nice cheap steel alternative.

no steel 6 lug available. Need a full size wheel and tire OR AAA towing card.

He speaks the truth - except draught, not bottles

I popped out the center insert and used the threaded shaft and nut to hold everything down. I carry a bottle jack, deep socket and braker bar in case of flat tires. The cover goes on top and gets screwed down too - all fits well

I went to Falken Azenis 255/40/18. Picked up a millie from tire rack for 140 and a used tire for fifteen bucks.

Went the Millie route from tire rack and bought the parts from GM (dealership) for the insert, jack, tool, as listed in the FAQ. Thread and pics here.

Me too...called Tire Rack, and the salesman sold me an inexpensive tire to go on the Mille Miglia wheel that would match my Toyo Proxe T1Rs. The spare opens up all sorts of possibilities for future tires (non-run flats), and the price on the Mille Miglia wheels can't be beat.

Just bought the car and I think I got pretty lucky. While wandering the parts dept at the dealer, I ran accross a complete set of wheels with a few scratches on each of them with 90% tread F1 runflats on them. I bought the complete set for $600. Took them to Discount Tire and had the good runflats mounted on the nicer rims that came with the car. Ordered some winter snow tires for the beat up rims and will keep the Bridgestones that came with the car in reserve. Problems are now solved.

I figure that the only time I really need a mounted spare is a complete sudden tire failure, which is comparatively rare these days.
More probable is a simple nail-type puncture, which can be plugged. As insurance against a flat that cannot be plugged I keep an unmounted take-off tire in the trunk tire well. I still have plenty of room for emergency storage gear in the well.
The probably hassle is a situation where a replacement tire is needed. Most small town tire stores do not stock our tire size, so having an old usable tire covers this situation.

When I was tire shopping none of the three places (Goodyear,Discount Tire,Kaufman tire) carried the standard V sized tire in stock and had to order them. That's in Dallas.

So as long as I find a 6X115 bolt pattern 18" X 8.5" X 42 offset, I can use it as a spare? Just got done reading the FAQ.

Same, except scissor jack and 4-way lug wrench. Works. Fits.

Found a Federal brand tire in McAllen Tx. (deep south Texas) with correct speed rating and size for $161 mounted and balanced. I am not familiar with this brand but it will be fine for a spare after switching to GSD-3s. By the way Urby, does it have to be Shiner Bock?? We prefer Corona down here on the border!! :alchi:
