hi. this is my first post. a friend of mine has a 1974 sedan deville and we are looking for the location of the air ride compressor. the system is not working, so i am trying to find a used compressor unit. i have heard that the compressor can be located above the rear axel and also behind the right side front fender. would this vehicle have two compressors?

any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks.

First of all :welcome: to the forums!

1974? .... It's probably in the engine compartment. I could be wrong though.

I am almost sure it is under the hood on a '74. Drivers side I believe.

o.k , i went to the shop to check things out and i found the following:

1.) a switch device above the rear axel that has wires running under the pasenger side to another piece of equipment located behind the passenger side wheel tub or inner fender thing.

2.) this equipment looks like some kind of reservoir. it has no electrical wires running to it , but rather a couple of vacume lines, there is a pneumatic line that runs to the formentioned switch, and one valve to manually fill the resevoir.

is this the entire system or is there some kind of compressor somewhere else. we looked all over in the engine compartment , but couldnt find anything else that looks like a compressor.

i have pictures but i dont know how to post them, any advice would be great.

To post pics:

go to photbucket.com, create an account, upload your pics, then on this (caddy) site when you're posting hit the little icon at the top of the post window that looks like a postcard with mountains on it, and insert the web address of your picture provided on photobucket.

Yes, there is a compressor. It is rather small. I can alsmost visualize it (though it's been many years. I would venture a guess that it is on the drivers side wheel house under the hood. Might have some cooling fins on it.

my buddy just bought this car, i pulled out this part in question, i dont think it has any compressor in the car. Basically i was looking on this fourm for anyone that has any info on this part. The vaccum tubes didnt hook up to anything the only connected line was to the rear axel just like described. anyone know what controls the 2 vaccume tubes? is the air ride automatic or is there a switch? and is the only way to add air at a service station?

Sounds like the compressor has been removed. The system is automatic. The lines run from the rear shocks to the compressor.

mine was under the hood on my 90 CDV but is in the back on my 99 STS so they've used both places.

You know, its funny you mention the fact that the lines seem to go to the axle and then no where else. I was about to reply the same as these guys last night and tell you you basically HAVE to have a compressor, but tonight I read about some Chevy Celebrity wagons that had a similar setup, and you "aired the rear up" with air from your typical service station to maintain the level of the rear when it was full up with passengers or cargo.

I would say either your compressor was removed, or it may have some unusual setup like that or otherwise.

If it has one it will be on the driver's side in the engine compartment. If you stand directly in front of the car on that side it will be mounted right where the wheel well arch begins. The carbon canister and snorkel for the air intake should also be in this same spot.

On another note these compressor do if I remember correctly have a nipple in which air from the a service station could be added. Never do this moisture will damage these compressors.

Would not have really added this but it made me double post.
