Does anyone know if my 2005 STS V8 has a top speed limiter and if so does anyone make a kit or modification chip to eliminate it ?? OK not the tires, but I am talking about the computer high speed limiter, just like the computer RPM limiter.

I am infering it is the same as the 98 - 04 seville. Look that the door sticker that tells you the OEM tire speed rating and that is what your car is limited to.

I read somewhere here about that..

Someone has reached the top speed... he said it goes to 269 kph (Euro STS)... I think it's the same with domestic .... talkin about the V8

btw.. 269 kph is 168 mph...

so there is a speed limiter.. but how to eliminate it... maybe cadillacfaq.com has something regarding that

As I recall the Governor on the domestic STS is 133mph

I did 131mph=211kph in mine last night to see what it could do, it wouldn't let me go any faster, not that I would ever need too!

The speed limiter is set per the tire speed rating, and many rentals are around 108. I believe you can go in with a TechII tool and reset the speed per the tire, but you can't eliminate it altogether. Most dealers won't do that, but if you have access to a TechII you can do it yourself, or find an independent shop that will--assuming you have the correct rated tires on there now.

No one has hacked the 05 V8 PCM so if you have the N* your stuck with your stock speed rating based on your RPO factory tires NOT WHAT YOU HAVE ON IT NOW
T-108
S-112
H-135
W-168
Z- No limiter (actually limited at 255 mph but unless you have a Veyron Im pretty sure youll never see that)

To the OP, if you havent even hit your limiter to know what it is why do you care about wasting time and money removing it? For the internal satisfaction that you know you can go as fast as you want? Well be sure and let the world know when you get past that whole wind resistance thing, thats if you live long enough...

My 05 1SG has seen 140 at the track.

Isn't there a V rated tire that is also OEM on some STSs?

Isn't there a V rated tire that is also OEM on some STSs?The 2005 model year came with V & W-rated Michelins. I don't know what trim packages had which tire.

Two corrections
T- 118 not 108
H- 130 not 135 (though my 03 STS with H tires hit the limiter at 138 MPH before hitting the fuel cut off)

and

V (apparently available on 1SE or 1SF RWD ONLY)- 149.

It has been claimed by some members that the limiter can be changed on all model years. I believe this. Export models have no limiter.

To date, the 2005 & 2006 PCM cannot be altered to vary mixture & ignition, but that's independent from top speed.

CadillacSTS42005

All of which is stored in the PCM which in 05-early06 has yet to be hacked (for V8 only the V6 all years has been hacked)

A Tech II cannot change the speed limiter either, its part of the cars PCM cal which is VIN SPECIFIC. Cals are downloaded from GM and placed in a sort of temp memory of a Tech II (much like using a Tech II as a jump drive) and then the Cal is downloaded to the PCM. It is not modifiable like the theftlock in the radio is, or turning off/on options in the BCM for voice commands or onstar, its PCM programming.

Most of the V6's are v rated-even the base base cars

Just stating what the tires speed saftey rating is, obviously this is not the actual limiter of the car it could be anywhere

Ive had rental V6 STSs up to 130MPH.

I've only had my V6 up to 123 or so though. It didn't top out I just didn't push it any further.

Hey next2pool. Did you see where he said. Can be modified like turning on and off options in the BCM like voice directions etc. ???

I'll just be damned! I thought the top speed limiter was supposed to be those white and black rectangular signs alongside the road. It just goes to show how mistaken you can be.

Although the fleet business is higher than GM would want, it is still a very big part of the overall business. After the Impala debacle, GM has stated that they will no longer offer fleet-only packages that may confuse or corrupt the aftermarketre-sale of these vehicles.

What was the"Impala debacle?"

Enterprise had a large number of Impalas that had the side (seat) airbags deleted since they were not mandatory (but standard equipment). When those cars hit the used car market, owners found out the hard way that the airbags were missing and had never been told they were deleted as part of the fleet package.

Thanks, I didn't hear about that, but then I would never buy a modern Impala. I used to own a 62 though.:)

my 06 1sg v8, is a late july car and I had a re flash or re program, had it set up on a 4wd dyno. It now has z rated tires, big brakes, cold air intake, cat back exhaust and no speed limit,as far as the car, it has been to 150 mph and was still pulling.good for me anyway.:)
