: Difference bethween L05 and LT1

Is it possible to get a break down of the differences bethween the L05 and the LT1 engines, other than one is a TBI and the other is port fuel injection? (block ,crank, pistons, intake. etc...). Also, transmission differences bethween the one in a 92 FWB (4L60) , and the one in a 96FWB....

Without getting to into it I'll just say that the LT1 is a much more complex motor. Cam driven water pump, reverse flow cooling, opti spark ignition, etc. Not much in the way of parts interchangeability.

Basically, I've always believed that the LT1/LS1 is a high performance motor that shares the CID of the other 350s, but that's basically it, I've always thought of the TBI 350 as a workhorse type of motor, with a ton of torque thats all down low.

They do sell LT4 hot cam kits for the older L98's like the one in my Caddy and I thought the cranks were similar too. I really dont know but like I said there isn't much in the way of parts interchangeability. The LT1 had more in common with the older small blocks than the LS1 which is pretty much a totally different motor. If you break things down though, the L05 would be a much cheaper motor to get hp out of plus the maintenance items are a hell of a lot cheaper.

Yeah, but they have like 300 lb/ft at 1600 rpm! Not bad for a Torqueless Wonder Small Block Chevy....

I miss my 455 Pontiac.... 500 lb/ft @ 2800 rpm... (I gotta watch it here, this IS Cadillac forums and the 500's were like 550-575 lb/ft!)

I still wanna put my 455 in the 94 Fleetwood.... With the full LT1 EFI....

From what I know, an LT-1 is a Gen 1 SBC with reverse-cooling heads and ignition on the front of the engine. It's the same bore and stroke and block.

It is a very unique block, can bolt on old stuff, but won't work with them (due to reverse cooling). This is the Gen II engine, they did a complete redesign, very little is shared, even though related.

LT1 cams can be run in older SB's, but lack mech fuel pump eccentric. And the pin on the front is long, which may interfere with the front cover (I am sure it will) so it will have to be cut down or changed. The LT4 HOT cam was designed on a std blank with mech fuel pump eccentric, but is compatible for all SB's.

The LS1 shares NOTHING parts wise, not even CID. It is a 345 CID engine. Only bore spacing remained the same (probably to save on tooling costs to tools could be modified to work on new blocks/heads, tooling is VERY VERY expensive!)

I found a 96 caprice with an LT1 with 156,000 miles for about $2000. I'm trying to figure out if its worth buying and swapping that engine into my 93 fleetwood and putting the 350 tbi in the caprice. i figured i could use the caprice as a winter car, but i don't need a winter car. is an lt1 with 156,000 miles worth the 2 grand? that would be the sole purpose of me picking up the car. Or am I denying myself the possibility of having a great performing l05 all year round?

Has anybody done this to their 93? Any success stories? Or am I an idiot for even thinking this up?:cookoo:

Not a bad idea. It would give you a good source of parts, but pricey for a parts car, unless you plan on tossing the L05 in the 96 and part ways with it.

I would go get a 5.3L or 6L GEN III V8, PCM, wiring, and toss it in for less than $2K and have a SWEEEEEEET ride. Swap in some 3.42's or 3.73's to make it a real screamer.

But reselling the 96 with the L05 would recover much and make the swap cheap. I picked up a 9C1 parts car with a good drivetrain for $300, engine, trans and disc rear end (rear end IS for sale....). So parts cars are out there.

I'm not looking for a 12 second fleetwood, but I know what you mean. I have the lowest gears available for this model, so I'm guessing I would have to change that if I intend on having any performance enhancements whatsoever. I'm just looking for a little more pick from what I've got now.

I really wanted to keep my mods cost to about $1500. No chance of that, huh?

With the LS1 style V8 maybe. You will need some work on the cross member and some exhaust work to make it fit. NOT a drop in. You need truck exhaust manifolds. A LS6 intake (all 01 up LS1's have LS6 intakes and injectors) is lower and a great piece. The truck intake is torquier in the low end, but over 5500 rpm starts to become a minor problem. But who drives over that eh? (ok ok ok, put your hands down....sheesh...)

The LT1, sure, easy to do it for under $1500. I wouldn't try with only $1500 for a LS1 style V8. You can get good deals now and then, but still the risks to go over $1500 are high. PCM tuning is also needed for any swap. PCM's are cheap either way you go.

I have a LT1 dual exhaust crossover up for grabs, $50 if you need it. I work in Libertyville, so I am not too far from you.
