View Full Version : Surprised by Year

We all are aware troubled Cateras can exist. They are the exception, but they are seen too often, and more often than we would wish.

What surpirised me about this example is the YEAR of the car:

I have to think a competent service professional could bring this car back.

FINDING that person, however, would likely be quite a challenge.

I dont know man, the good cars are cheap enough i would just spring for one of them, but then again if i had a lift and good tools and a cheap low mileage engine and tranny i would be interested...

Understood and agreed.

I should have said earlier the other thing which surprised me here is the low miles.

You read the ad and hear the hopelessness in the writing of the seller. The guy obviously has reached the end of his rope and given up. He just wants out at (almost) any price at this point. I mean this is a 2000 for goodness sake. I have seen giveaways on 1997 Cats and even some 1998 Cats. And there were a LOT more cars made during those earlier years.

But you do not see this kind of desperation sale very often for a 2000 Cat. The cars were better in 2000.

My feeling is this guy paid thousands for poorly executed repairs and has just reached the end of his rope.

Re the repairs:

It's not the as-stated Cadillac parts I would question in this car; it is the quality of the repair WORKMANSHIP which would cause me to have concern.

Any poorly maintainted car can become a money pit and this car doesn't look well maintained and was probably inproperly fixed.

My 2000 would be the same if I didn't keep up with the repairs, etc. They aren't much better than the early models.

True, for a 2k its not too bad of a deal, id like to know whats wrong with it though...

I still say cadillac needed to offer a manual tranny for these cars, had they done that when my 98's auto unit died at 106k miles, i would've retrofitted a 5speed (or mabye a 6speed if cadillac was real smart) in there and drove happily, instead i let the car go...

Well, the auction ended and the car went for south of two grand!

I'm just shaking my head here. That seems so out of line for a 140 MPH Y2K German sports sedan with less than 60,000 miles on the clock and with a clear, unbranded, title.

I don't care if the car has warts, which this one did not!

That just seems out of line.

What can I say. Live and learn.

What is the audiobahn package? I think they are limited at 130 mph. Someone on the forum tested it and got up to 134 mph.

AFAIK

All Cateras, including Sport and Standard, computer limited to 125 because of tires fitted at factory. MV6 capable of 140 MPH in steady state. Cat, too, provided:

* Computer governor defeated.

* Proper, 140 MPH rated, tires fitted.

I believe the Catera is the fastest Cadillac-badged car ever built in 2001 or prior.

OK, you got me.

What the heck is an "ETC"? Where and when were they made?

I always figured neither Caddy nor other American iron (Corvettes aside) went as fast as Catera, pre 2001, because there is no application for such speed in the USA. Catera, cloaked as MV6, was originally designed for the Autobahn - not for America. I know there are really fast Caddys today. They cost a fortune, too, beyond the budgets of many Cat fanciers.

Live and learn. Thanks for the dopeslap.

Looks like I needed it!

Was just cruising by in the Catera section. Kinda curious how the Cat is doing :)
An ETC is the Eldorado Touring Coupe. Named like that only in the final Eldorado (2001/2002) years as Cadillac changed the naming of the models to abreviations...

You might be lucky with the CTS (in a while)? That one is engineered for (and on) the Autobahn as well. You will find the same 3.2 (based on the 3.0) Opel engine as in the Catera in the 03 CTS.

I see Omega's every day over here. I really like the Catera 'version' of it and once in a while I see one over here.

If you are interested in more power for your 3.0/3.2: there are some fanatic Aussies that work on this engine (for their Holdens: also GM) and managed some Forced Induction and working on ECU manipulation... I am sorry not to be able to provide you a solid link, but they must be out there on the net...

have fun!

Thank you.

OK, the ETC is a teensy bit faster than Catera for the same model years. But it also is FWD. It would be unwise of me to write here my strong views re FWD automobiles.:stirpot:

Suffice it to say its RWD design is a key reason I am a Cat fancier. I've never owned a FWD automobile; I never shall own one.

Bottom line: Catera rules.

Cateras are not drag racers. They are road cars; they are great for touring and/or going fast on twisty roads.

And with its RWD design the Catera offers a 53.2/46.8 front/rear weight distribution that would be the envy of ANY FWD iron.

This is to say nothing re Catera's TOTAL absence of torque steer:

Read. Learn.

MPH Magazine - What is Torque Steer? (http://mph-online.com/mag/streetknowledge/003)

Bottom line: Catera rules.:)

Buy a real car, with rear-wheel drive.
