I have a 1984 Eldorado convertable and the emergency brake light tends to stay on all the time, even when the brake is off. Any ideas?

Does your car have a separate emergency brake light - separate from the regular brake warning light? My '97 Deville has a separate "Parking Brake" light, but most other Caddy's illuminate the same light for Parking Brake set and brake problem. If your car does not have a separate parking brake light and the brake light is illuminated, then there can be a problem with your brake system. carnut 08-05-06, 12:36 PM This lite comes on if vacuum is low in the booster, Check vacuum amount delivered from the belt driven vacuum pump. should be in the 16 to 20 hg range and steady. I've seen many of this era with misadjusted park brake cables which wont let the pedal fully return to depress the switch to turn off the light. The park brake levers on each rear caliper should rest on the cast in boss on the caliper when disengaged. If they dont this will affect the return of the park brake pedal. The pistons in the rear calipers ratchet out each time the park brake is set to adjust for normal pad wear. If the park brake is not used, the piston becomes siezed in the bore and the rear brakes wont grip the rotor with proper force. Then mechanics adjust the park brake cables in an effort to compensate rather than ratchet out the pistons with the levers on the caliper. Usually rebuilt calipers are necc. to correct siezed pistons. Roy Dunlap II 08-06-06, 09:03 AM thanks, I will give that a try | |
