: Northstar...is it worth the 9K

So I've looked about here a bit today and have seen lots of great info.

I'm buying a 06 STS tomorrow:woohoo: and I have two choices the V6 and the Northstar.
I'm a V8 junkie from way back and have read a good deal on the Northstar.

I'd like to hear a few peoples opinions on the matter...

Thanks!

I think V6 is also northstar... but anyway

If i had to choose between them, I wouldn't even consider the V6... I think V6 has all the power you need but, the sound of the V8 is irresistible ... plus you get MORE power...

If you dig TSBs, you will find some problems regarding fuel pump with those V6s.. that is, when less than 1/4 is left in the tank, the car may stop... but that's in some V6s...

both are good and reliable... they are also very close in case of MPG...

you will never regret the V-8, but if you go with the V-6, you will always wonder about those 2 extra cylinders and what they could have brought to the party!

Better to go with the best, - **** the rest.

Both engines are winners. I like to look at a power to weight ratio. Since people argue about which is better, HP or torque, I average both HP/weight and torque/weight. Using the 3.6 engine with 255 HP and 252 lb/ft vs. the Northstar with 320 HP and 315 lb/ft, I come up with the following:

CTS rwd 3.6, 3500 lbs: .073
STS rwd 3.6, 3960 lbs: .064
SRX rwd 3.6, 4164 lbs: .061
STS rwd N*, 4026 lbs: .079

I run these numbers on lots of cars and keep them on a spreadsheet on my Palm Pilot. I then test drive lots of cars. (Yes, I know I'm anal.) I generally find:

- Anything less than .06 is just too slow for me. The only exceptions are some light 4 cylinder cars with manual transmissions like the last generation Miata that rates .058.

- Cars in the .06 - .069 range are acceptable, but sedate. This is where my rwd SRX and Sierra Denali fall. I find the STS v6 fits this bill.

- Cars in the .07 - .079 range are good performance sedans, especially for daily drivers. My 3.6 CTS certainly fit this bill.

- Cars in the .08 - .089 range are an awful lot of fun to drive if in RWD or AWD configurations. (Try a Trailblazer SS.) However, FWD cars usually have too much torque steer with this much power.

- Cars above .09, and especially above .1, are wicked fun, but could be considered too much fun. Lots of power, but they can overwhelm the road conditions if you're not careful. My C5 vette at .112 certainly fit that bill.

So, in my opinion, you could get a good, solid, sedate STS or spend 7-9K more and get one that nearly falls in the "awful lot of fun" category.

If you were buying new, by preowned and get all of the options you want for less than the V6 price. That is my plan.

Cadillac certified pre-owned is a good plan. 6 yrs. total age or 100K total miles bumper-to-bumper is a darn good warranty. Plus, the warranty is transferable to the next buyer.

I'm all in for the "awful lot of fun"!!
Frankly, the car is for my wife, but I will spend plenty of time piloting it. For her the v6 is ok, but it doesn't give me the *Northstar smile*.:D

I've also read there have been two pretty major recalls on the V6 and that is a turn off as well.

From what I understand the standard upkeep is less on the Northstar as well, 100,000 mile plugs, up to 12K oil changes. I have not seen what the V6 is but I'm looking...

I'm pretty sure that we're going to go with the V8....

And c5, Thanks! :salute:

"Northstar...is it worth the 9K?"

YES! The Seville has not had a V6 in it since 1981. I don't think Cadillac should have ever offered one again.

I have not driven hers yet, but I've driven 4 of them. Both the 2WD and AWD.
I'm psyched, for her and I both. I'll spend plenty of time driving it as her driving scares the bejezzus out of me and I don't let her drive when I'm in the car. She drives like an old lady.

Anyone who is a nurse, especially an ER nurse, DESERVES a new car. The nurse vocation is the most RESPECTABLE of all in America. I read that way back in a poll of what career is the most appreciated.

And thanks for the welcome guys!

I believe the transmissions are different, and one of them had issues when climbing through mountains (ongoing software glitch? maybe fixed for 06). Do a search. Enjoy the Northstar. :)

hahahah....yeah, I married out of my pay grade!

I drove it for the first time tonight and had fun taking 20 MPH corners at 30 without a chirp. My son was tripping out and I was Grinnin from ear to ear!

:D

Now if I could just get all of the customization stuff programmed...  :bighead:

I have 130K on my Northstar. Change the oil with dino oil when the computer tells me, changed the water pump and coolant and belts for yucks at @100K, no problems yet, knock on wood. Car is averaging @21 MPG driven fairly hard. Original plugs, wires, etc.

Awesome engine!
