On the way back from a car show the IROC flicked over the 100,000 mile mark!
She's a mint condition 1988 305TPI that has lived her entire life in the UK, having been built in Van Nuys California in October 1988, shipped to Suncoast Chevrolet in Miami in November, never registered and appeared on UK soil in March 1989.

The car isn't worth much anyways in the grand scheme of things.
90,000 or 100,000 or whatever makes no difference.
However, as these cars were never sold officially over here there aren't that many of them and most are in the conditon you'd expect an 80s car to be in by now. Condition wise, mine is probably in the top 5 in the UK so regardless of mileage it's worth top dollar over here, which is around $8,500 - $9,000

As I don't plan on selling it anytime soon I'm not bothered anyways.


I've never had a car do 100,000 miles, just thought the mileometer looked neat flicking over! There's a real stigma in the general UK buying public for 100,000 miles as most cars over here are what you'd term economy cars and have 4 cyl engines. Therefore 100,000 is a lot and you'd be expecting to have to have a new engine soon (there are some exceptions, Saabs for example which seem happy to do 250,000). In fact, it seems harder to sell a car once it's covered 70,000 or even just 60,000 sometimes...

LOL! Yeah, from what I understand it's the white trash trailor park car of choice over there?

There's only about 5 80s Camaros in the UK that are in *really* nice condition, the rest are tired with worn out mechanicals, peeling paint, sagging headlining, torn seats, dodgy electrics etc. As you'd expect.
Mine was owned for several years by your stereotypical old english gent who had a big stately home with the stables converted to garages for his classic car collection. The IROC was his wifes car and was always garaged and maintained regardless of cost. Due to their age and thus difficulty getting in and out of the car it had to go. Their best friend bought it on a whim, kept it garaged and covered about 6,000 miles in her and then decided to sell it on 3 years later as he "upgraded" to a vette. I was the next owner and I've had her for over 2.5 years now. It's my pride and joy and if I *had to* get rid of one of my cars it would be the Caddy. The Caddy is better in every way, but I love my Camaro and as it has character (which the STS does not) I have an emotional attachment to it that I don't have with the Caddy.

I still remember when the '64 Impala my family had when I was a kid rolled over 100,000 miles sometime in 1974. We were on a short road trip and my Mom or Dad (can't remember who was driving) announced it. My sister and I peered over the front seat to watch the numbers go. We kept the car in the family for another 10 years and 50,000+ miles. God, I loved that car.

The '74 Celica I drove through high school, college, and my first year on my own rolled 100,000 miles in the summer of 1986. It seemed to have a nervous breakdown as the milestone approached with several things breaking down or wearing out. But I kept the car 2.5 years longer and another 30,000 miles. Wish I still had it; it would be a fun little runabout.

Cruella, my '91 DeVille, passed the 200,000-mile mark a few days after I bought her. With the digital odometer, it's not nearly as dramatic as all those nines rolling over. She has 215,000 on her now.

BTW, hardrock, I enjoyed the pictures from your car show. I didn't realize Yank Tanks have such a following in Britain. That gold '65 Riviera is gorgeous.

I take it the Impala was 2 years old when your parents bought it? Do you remember what sort of mileage it had on at the time? Sounds like it spent the majority of its life with your family. I wonder what became of her?


As for yank tanks in the UK, they do have a following (not that you'd think so if you watched Top Gear on tv). The big american shows attract some 50,000+ visitors in a weekend. There are american shows on every weekend in some part of the country during the spring/summer season. In fact, there's normally more than 1 on at a time.
Most people over here who are into cars would have at least one american car in their dream garage. Normally a Charger or a Mustang. Even though many people could afford to have one (as a weekend toy) they don't realise it. They're afraid of insurance cost, driving on the wrong side of the car, fuel consumption, availability of parts etc etc. But some of us make the jump, normally after watching a friends experience of owning an american car. Interestingly, once you've made the jump to an american car you rarely go back.

The IROC is my second ever car, before that I had a Focus. I sold that to get the IROC and bought an old Ford Escort for daily use. I soon got fed up of that after jumping out of the IROC so I bought the STS as a daily car.
I bought the Camaro as I was a kid in the 80s and watched Kinght Rider. When I discovered there were many american cars over here (often brought over by US servicemen or as a personal import) and they were wirthin my price bracket I started looking for a black 80s Trans-Am. Then I discovered the Camaro was the same car but looked a little meaner I went for one of them. I hunted high and low for a black 350TPI with leather seats and t-tops. But I saw so many junkyard dogs I almost gave up. Then I found this one, "Only" a 305 and the wrong colour but I bought on condition. As there are so few of them over here (compared to the USA) you really need to buy on condition and not on some imaginary "perfect" spec. I've since discovered that IROCs were only available in this colour in 88 so it's reasonably rare. The only IROC in this country in that colour that I am aware of, and one of only 4 Camaros in that colour.

I wonder what became of her?Very, very true. I've loved cars for as long as I can remember, and I specifically loved that car. When I bought Betty, I felt I had gotten a part of my life back. Even though Betty was rougher than I had hoped when I went to buy her, when I started her up, she sounded exactly the way I remembered Nellie did. And when I drove Betty, she drove just like I remembered. Bondo and rust notwithstanding, I was hooked.

I'm not sure what the mileage was when we got Nellie, but I'd guess it was between 20,000 and 30,000 miles. I think my Dad paid around $1,600 for her in December, 1966 when I was six months old. I have another picture from 1968 with me standing in front of Nellie:

Who would have thought when that picture was taken that I'd learn to drive in that car.

My Dad sold Nellie to an airman who was soon to be transferred to Minot AFB, North Dakota. A while back, I tried to track the car down to see if she was still on the road. I had the license plate number from 1984 and the first five digits of the VIN because I knew 41819XXXXXXX identifies a 1964 Chevrolet Impala sedan.

The DMV office in Texas I reached was actually able to match up the plate number and the part of the VIN I had, but she couldn't release the full VIN number information because I didn't have the name of the last person who registered the car in Texas (I assume that was the person who bought the car from my Dad). I've asked my Dad if he has any old registration papers or insurance documents that might have the VIN, but he said anything like that was tossed long ago.

Too bad, I wish I could find out if she's still on the road.
