So, by a show of hate mail... how many of you would dis-own me if i were to trade my '96 SLS in on a Smart car when theyre available in the US? A couple of things id like to point out: I will keep my '85 Seville Commemorative, and i still have the 'Cadtoo' (see avatar) But i mean when i have to stop every time i see a gas station and pay $3.30... i hate to admit it... but it gets to me, and my debit card... its wearin' out. I'm sure that im pissing into the wind here, Love my SLS... but maybe it needs a new home in a higher tax bracket.

If you buy a smart, I will tell you stop to rolling tea leaves and smoking them! (chai in many languages of course means 'tea')

But let me pose this philisophical question: Why do people in Smart cars look so Stupid?

Why cant they make one that doesnt look like its on a whole new level of ugly?
Why cant there be an sls with the capability of 50mpg instead

Hmm on a more serious note as advice I should tell you that Smart cars are of course only serviceable at Mercedes dealerships, so ensure that you are in range of one, and that their general repair costs are higher. The same goes with diesel, if there are enough gas stations in your area.

I would rather go with a Civic six speed, their gas mileage is just as good, and in the long run won't be so harsh on your pocketbook, and hip. Have you seen their crash tests, I believe that is the only reason that they were kept off the American roads for so long, if you check the web you can see the crash tests as it hits another Mercedes (C class I believe) and it does not fair well at all... Heaven forbid it hits something bigger.
And the resale value is not as good for those cars, I hate to say it, but they're full of hype and less practicality. To drive one is to tell others (well at least I feel), "I'm environmentally righteous!" It's a status symbol in its own regard.

Overpriced.
Ugly.

But if you dig it, then have fun. :)

Yes, the other option would be a Honda hybrid, Ive been extremely impressed with Honda since i was a wee lad... Or maybe a Mini, best MPG in its class... or is it alone in its class...?
Ill have to agree with a good part of what youre all saying, service bills would be astronomical, and i dont live in a terribly urban setting, i mean i find plenty of room to let my SLS stretch out, so the Smart, for me, would be -dare I say?- over-practical. Then there's the styling of the Smart model that Mercedes is bringing to America... yup, fugly. If they brought the Roadster id be all over it, but they have stopped production on that model.
So maybe ill keep the Caddies (I dont remember what life was like without a Northstar) and get a Honda Shadow Aero, sounds like a plan.
Thanks for understanding, and talking me out of my dillusion.

You'd trade in a Cadillac for a Smart car?!?!
You do realise it's like 600cc has 3 cylinders is mostly plastic and has a habit of rolling over? Plus the interior looks like is's designed for pre-school kids?
You could put the thing in the Caaddy's trunk!

Oh and it's very definately a chicks car!
Unless you're a guy who works in new media or hair dressing.

I can now finally say, I've seen/heard everything...

Peter Sellers is rolling over in his grave...and soon Lassie will be too. Damned remakes!

No one would ever be able to pull off the CHIEF Inspector as Sellers did.

Martin did- Ok... My bigger disappointment was Keven Kline and his seeeming ability to lose the French accent. He's a much better actor than that.

Civic > Smart

And I never thought I'd ever say that the Civic was better than anything!

Yep. The Smart car vs. the 6000 lb SUV = certain death.

I dont think its a good image car for MB but still think its a pretty cool little car. I would be interested to see how it drives. If you like it then by all means go for it!. I'd bet this little car will have a very devoted following.
