not the best way to start the day....call from the credit card company about "suspicious charges". Anyhoo...somebody got my CC info and went wild over the last 3 days. Adult Friend Finder (lol), $660 of shoes :hide:, thousands of dollars of stuffz. Trouble is...you don't know HOW they got your CC info, or if that's ALL they have. I was included in the millions compromised by that huge VA data theft  so sure, they could have everything. Could have nothing but the CC...which is zero liability and easy to fix. ID theft is entirely different.

Oh well...solution?
1. Cancel CC. Dispute everything. No problem.
2. Visit www.experian.com and do the online process for the initial fraud alert. Thats an easier site to navigate than the others. Don't call, use the online way...if you call, you don't get a credit report. Online, they send you right to your credit report so you ensure it's clean. I very anally every 90 days refile the fraud alert.
3. I have bought this

ID theft insurance. Its NOT a "credit monitoring" service, like the credit bureaus offer. If fact, YOU have to file the fraud alerts. What it does is AFTER you become a victim they deal with it. They deal with creditors, collectors, affidavits, they even reimburse you for time spent dealing with it. I submitted my claim with them this am, and I'm damn well getting $ back for time spent. its cheap, really cheap, too. Dave Ramsey > *

Be careful out there folks. I anally shred everything....but just think about who you give you CC to everytime you eat out, shop, use online sites. Scary.

I'm just dreading the day something like that happens....

What do you think about the monitoring service?
I was thinking about that...

i've never paid for a monitoring service.
Since you can get a free credit report every 12 months from EACH bureau, what you do is use www.annualcreditreport.com
you select experian, then 4 months later equifax, then 4 months later transunion, then guess what, 4 months later back to experian. Add that to your every-90-day fraud alerts, and you MAY be protected.

Happened to me once, too.

Credit card company called to ask about $300 in suspicious charges. I said it wasn't me, they said okay no problem.

I cancelled all my cards. Every single company thanked me and went out of their way to help.

It was apparently an inside job at the CC company. They kept me informed so that I could maybe help them find out who did it. After about six weeks they said the case was closed, it wasn't related to me or anything I had done and not to worry about it anymore. I never got any details.

My checking account was draind this week because someone got ahold of the wife's debit card number due to a computer break in. They bought 1400 in bikinis, 900 in sunglasses, 500 in cameras, etc. I got all the moeny back and called all the merchants before anything was sent.

I swear I just heard something a day or so ago about the VA laptop being the cause of something like this. Good thing you used protection.

whats the every-90-day fraud alerts?no, you DONT need all 3. They are the same. Space them out.

fraud reports, do it online dude
www.experian.com is really easy to navigate
just continually put fraud alerts on....experian propagates them to the other 2 bureaus. this means they have to CALL you and confirm your identity before any credit accounts can be opened under your name.

Sucks to hear about urb. Sorry you've got it to deal with it. It appears it's unlikely to be related to the V.A. laptop.

VA laptop recovered; FBI says data not accessed.

I've been on Equifax's 3in1 credit watch for years. Too easy for the scumbags to get one's info now.

cool, well it may not be the VA...but Tricare was hacked (any of you have Try-to-care?). And maybe it was just the pimply-faced 19 year old at the hamburger joint a week ago.

No offense meant, of course, to any 19 year olds out there :) But you never know. With your CC, they have your name, number, and the security code on the back...AND your signature!!! ACK!

:hmm: Do you suspect foul play?

I don't remember what movie that was from but it's funny anyway.

Well you obviously know the next steps in repair. And not that it makes it better but at least it's only a few thousand. They could have spent 50k 60k on you or more.

I'm certainly not trying to make light of the situation but it could have been worse. As long as the CC company isn't going to hold you responsible then I would get all new CC's and change your SSN if you think that's been compromised.

I have heard of info being captured from those 'Pay at the Pump' deals. Do you use those? And don't laugh at the burger joint, that's highly possible. Those are all pretty new installs and could very easily be insecure and unencrypted.

the burger joint was a sit-down affair...the kind where you give the CC to your server and in 10 minutes they come back. scary.
