My '95 FW has the check engine light on and with this year you can't just connect the A-B diagnostic connector pins and get the light to flash codes, you need a scan tool. What is a good brand to look at other than the factory expensive Tech1 and Tech2 models?

You don't need a scanner with them. Check this post further down this page to find out how:

If you need more in depth info, go to www.akmcables.com (http://www.akmcables.com), buy the appropriate cable, and then you can get Freescan, or any of the other available software out there. There are links on the akm site. Of course, you'll need a laptop. Also, I would highly recommend a Factory Service Manual. I got one on ebay for less than $20 shipped. It contains a wealth of knowledge, including flowcharts for what to do after you find out what codes you have. With these and a little automotive knowledge, you should be in good shape.
