My 83 Coupe Deville's trans seems to work fine for a while. But after 10 or 15 miles when you come to a stop as you slow the whole thing shakes and the engine starts to die like a stick shift when you stop and don't push in the clutch. Then something releases and it runs ok. Maybe the torque converter locks and doesn't release? What could it be and how do I fix it.

Check your codes, I'll bet your car is throwing code 39. That is for the Torque Converter lock up solenoid. It's a fairly easy and inexpensive fix. This is a fairly common problem, try searching it in this forum, all the answeres and info you want has probably been posted already.
