So I was wondering what that small belt is on the left side of the engine. I can't really see where it goes. It's half convered and half exposed. What the heck is that for?

The waterpump. It's driven off of one of the cams. Make sure to check the belt for any wear, cracks etc.

Really? I would have never guessed. I guess the water pump isn't on the front of these puppies huh?

I forget the reason it's over there, but it sure does make it really easy to change when it needs to be done!

The engine is rotated 90 degrees grom RWD. That would be the front in a RWD car.

Zonie77......In the N* the water pump is attached to what would, in a RWD vehicle, be considered the rear of the left cylinder head, driven off the end of one camshaft via a 1 2/2 to 1 stepup pulley/belt/tensioner arrangement. Just outboard of this is the transmission dipstick..... All the other belt-driven goodies are on the passenger ("front") side of the engine. You rotated the engine 90 deg. the wrong way.

You're right.

That whole housing on the back of the engine comes off, it connects the two cylinder heads to eachother and it also houses the EGR system.
It is an uncommon place in the realm of automobiles to put a water pump, but that is sure where it is.
