Back in '96, I remember hearing that GM was extending the '96 model year for the B and D body cars.

When were the last ones built? And how many Fleetwoods were built for 1996?

Mine was built in September 1996, and its vin ends in 12595.

I think the number was like 23,000 but I'm probably wrong on that one.

Side note, you have a '58 Plymouth Belvedere? Sweeet!! Coupe or Sedan?

It was that high?? That means they made a lot of them after Sept. '96 if mine is #12,595.

The Plymouth is a two door hardtop. I likey.

Nope, it was like this:

1993: 29,744
1994: 23,177
1995: 13,445
1996: 12,596

They made fewer each year, especially for '95 with the drop off of about 10k.

As for the last production date, GM DID extend the production through the end of 1996, so there are some Caprices and the like out there that do have 12/96 production dates--and the Fleetwood was cut off a little sooner, around September.

According to something Katshot, who used to buy these cars yearly for their corporate fleet, a lot of the "late" '96s that were produced in the final few months had largely varying quality levels--lots of poorly misaligned panels, crooked trim, rattles, etc. That would make sense, since the line was wrapping up and the workers started to slack a bit--and it's also something to look out for, if you're buying one today. Not a definite thing, but something he noticed having owned some of these cars each of the 4 years.

Buick61...at least according to the numbers, you may have the second to last Fleetwood ever built!

Most likely just got sent to a dealer and sold--they really didn't have a reason to keep the last one around for something special, and never usually do that anyway for most vehicles.

Probably a little old lady out there cruising around in it somewhere:)

God she is a beaut!!! Identical to Christine except Christine was a Fury, not a Belvedere. But in all reality, you could not get a Fury in red, just Black and white.

What motor does that have? Is it the 318 or the 350 Super Commando?

I think '58 Furys only came in Buckskin Beige.

Mine has the dual-quad 350 Golden Commando.

doubt that... the last vehicle produced probably went to the GM Heritage Museum... or whatever it is called.

They made 15,109 Fleetwoods for 1996. If you look through this part of the forum you might be able to find a list of all the different colours and how many were each different colour. Sandy made some posts like that for Fleetwoods.

GM typically only keeps the last of an historically significant model for themselves. Examples are the last 1976 Eldorado convertible, the last Eldorado (2003?) and the last Oldsmobile, I think that was an Alero. They also keep a milestone car, like the one millionth Buick or something like that. I doubt they kept the last Fleetwood, that was a car they were kind of glad to be done with. It would be a logistical nightmare for a car company to keep the last of every car they made.

"And here we have the very last Chevette ever, and right next to it is the very last Pontiac J2000 made"

LOL yeah right...

With the F.I. option it was 315. Mine was rated at 305.

I've read two sources that list 12,596. If they did make over 15,000, they were sure busy after September. When did they finally go out of production?

im still gonna have to disagree with you. i know they dont keep every last vehicle they make but think about it... it is the Fleetwood. Fleetwoods have been around for how many years? right see? the fact of the kind of vehicle it was. plus it was the car that was called the Cadillac of Cadillacs. if they did they did, if they didnt they didnt. i dont really care.

Sweet, my family had a '57 Chrysler Windsor four door sedan with the 285hp "Spitfire" (I think that's what it was called) 354 from 1992-2001. It was a coral pink with white accents. I think it had 44,000 miles on it when my father sold it to his Uncle.

Chrysler really knew what they were doing from 1957 to about 1972!

Yup. But it's a vinyl top, not cloth.

Thanks all for the information!

I rented a 1994 Fleetwood (LT1 right?) and it started me on a circuitous route that included a 1995 Impala SS to a 1999 Lexus GX400 to a 2003 Subaru WRX to a 2003 50th anniversary Corvette back to a 2006 CTS-V... To quote a famous dead guy, "What a long strange trip it's been..."

I rented the black on black Fleetwood at the Pensacola airport, picked up my my Mom and drove 100 mph down I-10 to Biloxi for my Mum's gambling pleasure. Spousal unit and mom didn't even notice the "ton" speeds, that's when I fell in love with quiet, smooth and very fast vehicles. The driver's side window wouldn't work but who cared, quiet, smooth & fast.

Great memory!

I still remember my parents renting a 1995 Fleetwood Brougham in December 1995 and we drove it from Virginia to Florida to visit my grandparents. That was the most comfortable 2200 miles you could have in a car with 5 people and luggage. My Dad let me drive 400 or so miles on that trip.

.. and come 10 years later, I am driving a 1996 Fleetwood Brougham
