Hey Everyone,
I was driving home in my 03 CTS on friday and coincidentally my friend was driving behind me. He called me up to tell me that my drivers side brake light (the top circular one) is out. When I got home, I turned the car off and sure enough, the brake light didn't work when the brakes were applied.

I thought it mostlikely the bulb had burnt out. However after a little more investigating, I found out the light still works as a running light when the car is not in park.

In other words, when the car is off and the brakes are applied, the passenger-side brake light lights up, but the drivers side does not.

However, when the car is out of park, both lights light as running lights, however when the brake is applied, the passenger side brake light works (lights up completely), however the driver side brake light only stays at running-light brightness.

Has anyone else expereinced this? I've seen this in many various cars while driving down the road. Are there 2 light bulbs in the top circular light (one for the running light, another for braking light?) or could there be a bad connection somewhere?

I'm going to call up the dealership on monday and I'll probably take apart the trunk tomorrow and take a look, but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this or if they know what might be occuring.

Thanks!

Haven't happened on my car.... but I would think that there is 2 different lights for the running and break lights and would be why!!!

The light bulb is burnt out. The brake light is a dual filament bulb. The brighter filament burned out but the dim filament is still intact. That's why it lights up when the lights are on but doesn't get brighter when you apply the brakes.

Cool, Thanks for the info!

I'm thinking of just going and buying a new bulb tomorrow and replacing it myself, however is this something that would be covered under warranty?

I had a sidemarker bulb out and my dealership replaced it for free.... you should probably go and check with them:)

It's pretty easy to change those if you have minimal technical skill. Give it a shot yourself, if you can't do it, take it to the dealer.
That happened to both of my brake lights on my old car. Stupid lights...

i had my brake light bulb replaced for free under warranty. It seems like it's a common to see a cts with a prematurely burnt brake light bulb

Talk about redundancies and back ups...how about 5 brake lights! :bouncy:

But it looks so damn good! I'd love to see a night shot with it all lit up!
