View Full Version : God I hate brake work noahsdad 05-27-06, 05:32 PM Just finished a brake job on my wife's Silhouette. One of the pads had separated and the thing was shuddering like a whore in church. What a PITA! The disc brakes weren't bad, but since it's been 20 years since I did any brake work, I'd forgotten what a pain drum brakes can be. You need four freakin' hands to assemble those damn things!
Then last night about midnight, my very last bolt on the front caliper had a bad thread where the pin bolt goes in - I was making up new swear words at that point.
Anyway, thanks to the guys at NAPA, I found a tap to clean up the threads this morning, and she's back in the stopping business. Which is good, because now I can take a nice air conditioned ride in the caddy...
Have a nice Memorial Day weekend everybody! I~LUV~Caddys8792 05-27-06, 05:36 PM Oh man, that reminds me of when my dad did the brakes on his brother's '92 F-150 4x4. Took him 3 days to do new rotors/ calipers and shoes all because of the 4x4 hubs not acting right or something when he had them apart. Stoneage_Caddy 05-27-06, 05:51 PM lol , always hated drums .... Same here. I do believe that I will never own another car that doesn't have discs at all four corners. I just did all four rotors and pads on Friday, and was done in two hours, including clean-up. This sounds like a decent time, but consider this. I had knee surgery on May 1st. I am still in a full leg brace, that doesn't allow my leg to flex. Needless to say, clean-up time (putting tools away in my basement) took way longer than it should have. I can remember doing drums, having every part I needed laying in front of me, and it taking an hour per side easily. Sometimes it took that long to get the drum off (damn star adjusters). I love disc brakes.
Don dbdartman 05-28-06, 08:09 PM Rookies... If it takes me 30 minutes to do a brake pad & shoe change on any of my old Mopars, I stopped for an ice water & smoke... Add another 10 minutes to get tools out, jack & J-stands, etc., then put them away again. I just did the rotors on the Q. It would have been easy if not for the AWFUL HUMIDITY. Ugh. I need a climate-controlled garage. When I was done my heart was racing and I was feeling dizzy from exhaustion. I used to hate replacing shoes on drum brakes too until I bought myself a tool kit for drum brakes. Made all the difference in the world. It's amazing how easy a job can sometimes be with the right tools! Long thin phillips screwdriver and a hammer are all ya need for the good 'ol Mopar brakes! DBDartman is right...quick and easy! Porsches use those nifty quick-swap clips for the pads. Of course, they eat pads more often. And when those clips break... terrible one 05-31-06, 10:38 PM I recently did the front drums on the Charger because the guy gave me all the new parts with the car. It was a pain, but it only took me about 2 hours to do it all. Stoneage_Caddy 05-31-06, 11:13 PM Porsches use those nifty quick-swap clips for the pads. Of course, they eat pads more often. our 73 vette has those , so nice .... Ohhh...'68 Charger with drums? you shouldn't have wasted the time...it MUST have discs...because if you put anything other than a big block in it, you just ain't right! :) RobertCTS 06-01-06, 10:10 AM Four wheel disc brakes jobs are easy.

Yeah, I plan to put a disc setup on it up front after a while, but with no engine or trans it's not going to need the stopping power for a while. with no engine or tranny it doesn't need drum brakes either than! :) I've got the 'ol 72 E-Body prject I'm working on...finished detailing the engine compartment, interior is coming along nicely...brakes are all back to a little better than stock and brand new. Tranny is built, engine is built but has to go in...time is all I need...time and money...both damned near impossible to come by.
