Cadillac Models to Join the Action in Xbox 360 Game

A screen shot from Project Gotham Racing 3, which will include Cadillacs under an advertising deal.

There are few places online not full of advertising, but Xbox (http://tech2.nytimes.com/gst/technology/techsearch.html?st=p&cat=&query=xbox&inline=nyt-classifier) Live, the Microsoft (http://www.nytimes.com/redirect/marketwatch/redirect.ctx?MW=http://custom.marketwatch.com/custom/nyt-com/html-companyprofile.asp&symb=MSFT) broadband network that lets Xbox game console owners compete online, is one of them.
This week Cadillac will announce that it has struck an advertising deal to incorporate some of its cars in the Xbox 360 game, Project Gotham Racing 3. Virtual recreations of three of its high-performance models — the CTS-V, the STS-V and the XLR-V — will be made available as free downloads.
Deals like this also represent another source of revenue for video games, many of which now have the online connectivity that can allow advertisers to monitor the viewership of their messages.
Cadillac is one of the first companies to advertise on Xbox Live. But Kevin Browne, the Microsoft general manager for Xbox new media and franchise development, said that the company expected to announce between 10 and 20 such deals over the next year. Earlier this month, Microsoft announced that it had acquired Massive, a company that sells ads in games.
The Cadillac deal was put together by Play, the video game unit of Denuo, a division of the ad giant Publicis Group that focuses on new media.
"It's another model to distribute advertising," said Michael Goodman, a senior analyst at the Yankee Group. He said that the market for advertising in video games was $56 million in 2005, a number he expected to triple this year.
For years, racing video games have incorporated increasingly accurate representations of actual cars, which are able to accelerate and handle on the screen the way they do on the road.
Software makers usually pay a royalty for the right to use a vehicle's likeness, even though inclusion in a popular game can generate a certain amount of awareness in the young, male audience.
In Project Gotham, players who score top times on the Nürburgring, a race track in Germany that Cadillac has used to test vehicles, will receive a "Cadillac Elite" status to show off to fellow gamers and perhaps eventually use to receive other prizes.
"But it would be a mistake to capitalize on this space without taking advantage of it," said Saneel Radia, a group director of Play. "The fact that other people are looking at it creates an aspirational value for Cadillac." ROBERT LEVINE

I just finished a lap at the Nurburgring F1 Circuit in 1:20.70, which is good for the 84th best CTS-V lap in the world! (For now) I am now rocking my "Cadillac Elite" Gamerpic. Yay me!

I just got the X-box 360, and downloaded the V series update, and I have to say - it's very cool. Graphics are unreal for a video game. Driving the CTS-V in the system is a ton of fun. Certainly doesn't feel like a Cadillac advertisement, either. I would have paid to get this, considering I own a CTS! (But I'm glad it was free). I would highly recommend it to anyone else.

And I'm working on my Caddy elite gamer pic right now as well.

Wish they had this on X-box also. Can't get a 360 until the next Halo comes out.

To get the Cadillac gamertag, do you have to be in the top 100 overall or top 100 Cadillac's or what? Does anyone know?

Go to "career", then "view my cars". Select a V series car, then choose "Test Drive" (you may have to select "more" at the bottom of the menu first, below "walk around garage" and "photo mode"). Place in the top 100 times in the world on the Nurburgring F1 curcuit in the V of your choice, and the gamerpic is yours.

So how do you get the V's? Just get on Live? I got my xbox a few days ago and haven't gotten on Live yet.

I got on Live and found it. Very cool. Is it just me or is the V rated a little low. I thought the c6 was low compared to some of the cars above it. Seems like the braking and handling on the V should be higher.

I can already see Live is going to be a money maker for Microsoft. On the first night I downloaded my free V cars and bought the speed pack of cars plus I've downloaded 3 demo's.

I'm still no happy about the V's performance sucking. It looks like they have the GTO as a better car. Same acceleration and braking, but better drifting. Did GM not pay enough to have them make the V's good cars.

The GTO's "better" drifting rating just means it has less grip, making it more suitable for cone challenges and racking up Kudos. I spank GTOs all the time on Live, not to mention most other E class cars.

It's funny how in online races everybody goes straight for the Ferraris and Lambos, but I scoot right past 'em in the V. I love it.:histeric:
