Hi. I did a search and see that a lot of people talk about using the Valentine 1 for radar detecters. I was wondering if anyone has any firsthand knowledge on Whistler radar detectors... I am thinking about getting the remote mount radar and kinda on a tight budget right now.... I can grab that radar for like 160 compared to the remote mount passport for 600 and the Bel remote mount for 370.. just wondering if anyone knows the quality of Whistler.. my brother said he used it and it was a good detector...I dont normally speed or anything.. just like to have the extra protection considering summer is coming up and i drive down the shore alot... thanks

Save your money until you can afford a valentine one. That and the passport 8500 (think that is what it is), are the only ones to have.

I have had Whister, Bel, Cobra and many Escorts and Passports, the 8500 is good, but I have four V1's, one in each car, and they are the best for my needs. :)

I have just a $120 cobra radar detector and it works great for me. It even talks to me when I start the car.

I would have to agree with Cadnathan here. Save your money and get the V1.

I use to have the Passport 8500 X50. I loved it and it works great. I then gave it to my wife for her Lexus, and bought me the V1.

Both radars are great. I recommend either one. Of course, the main reason I love the V1 more is because it has the arrows. Whenever I drive my wifes Lexus and the X50 goes off, I would be looking all over the damn place for the cops.

But, with the V1, it tells you where they are hidden.

The valentine one has Been absolutely flawless for me. Always correct detections front, side, rear. If a cops got his detector powered up the V1 will know.

is the V1 cordless? Where do yall have it mounted?

If it isnt cordless, did you hardwire it to a fuse box?

i like the clean look, i dont want wires everywhere....

No it is not cordless. You dont want cordless anyways. My friend has a Cordless Passport and got rid of it when the battery almost died, and it didnt work. It slowly fades away, so if the detector goes off, you never know if the battery is almost dead, so it wont give you that 100% detection.

The V1 comes with a cord and also comes with the hardwire. I have my V1 right next to my mirror and hardwired up to my overhead console. You cant see the wires at all. Very clean look.

One more thing CK...do you have it mounted to the windshield with suction cups so you can take it down quickly IF you get pulled over?

If not, how is it mounted?

thanks,
Chris

I have it suctioned cupped to the windshield and its towards the driver side of the mirror (left side of mirror), a little higher than the mirror though.

Yes you can unhook it real fast if you're getting pulled over

Ok thanks. I currently have a passport brand. I got it suction cupped to the windshield but it is in the upper left corner. My hard wire is ran down inside that plastic piece right there and goes inside the left of the dashboard.

I am going to buy a V1 and i will prolly mount it where you have yours...

No problem. I use to have my old Passport in the upper left corner of the windshield too. But then one day, I was turning and for some reason, the suction cups came loose and it nearly went out the driver side window!!!!

Good thing the cord held it on! Thats when I no longer will ever put it at the corners, lol.

I have my V1 at the driver side of the mirror, and if a cop is pulling up from behind, I just put the visor down to cover it, so he cant see it.

Get only teh passport or the V1. I have used many many many different types and the passport so far is the best. i have not tried the V1 but im sure the advantage will be mainly the arrows. dont buy something cheap, you will regret it later.
My dad had 3 brands, 1 from costco, one from internet and a bell(that i used and gave him) now they all sit in a drawer waiting for ebay.

again up until now i have only used Cobra rad detectors and they have no failed me yet.. my thing is just that i dont feel it necessary to pay 600 for a remote mount radar detector when the whistler is 170 off ebay.. i mean i know you get what you pay for but radar is radar and im not that much of a speeder and i barely even use my truck.. i think just for the sake of saving ill jsut go with the whistler for now.. thanks for all the input on this subject..

Hard wired mine in from the overhead console, the detector sits on top of the mirror on the passenger side with sucking cups on the windshield.

will this unit fit inside the small sunglass compartment above the mirror. Then hard wire it.

Not sure, the 03' does not have that. :(

for detector friendly states I have it hardwired to my over-head console, but use the clip in the lower sunvisor above the rear view mirror...when I need to tuck it away when I leave the truck etc I flip it upside down and its out of site bewteen the 2 visors

in non-friendly states/provinces I have it hardwired under the pass headrest (between headrest and top of seat) - only drawback is you can't see the arrows when it goes off

I'm trying to figure out the best place to hard wire my V1! I also have the adapter module as well for stealth mode.

i have the bel vector 985 - have owned it for 2-3 years. Has saved me many a ticket. Previously I owned a Cobra which I was not happy with. While the Bel 985 originally cost me over $300.00 I see you can purchase them now for $100.00 online. It does not tell you where the cop is with arrows but what does that really matter? So if the cop is on your right you won't slow down? When this goes off, I know to slow down. Just my $0.02 if you are not looking to drop a car payment on a radar detector.
