I have a 1999 Cadillac Catera with 53000 miles and yesterday I experienced a peculiar problem. First let me say that that weather was really cold ~-12F. I was driving on the highway (I had already driven about 60 miles so the car was certainly warm), and all of a sudden a huge cloud of blue smoke was coming out the rear of my car. Eventually, the oil light came on, although the oil pressure gauge was in the normal zone. I topped up the oil (it took 2 quarts), and noticed a lot of oil around the oil filler spout. This was not spillage because it covered a fairly large area and I had never had to add oil before this. There was also a lot of yellow sludge on the inside of the oil filler spout. The smoke was coming from oil that had covered my exhaust system and was not being burned in the engine. I drove home about ninety miles with no further incident and no more blue smoke. Also there appears to be no more oil loss and not obvious oil leakage.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem. Naturally my car has just come off warranty so this could get expensive!
It appears to me that the oil was blown out the filler cap but that is pure speculation.
Thanks.
