I bought a Cobra radar from this outfit. They use to be a Forum Vendor. Tomm was his user name. I hardwired mine up next to the mirror in the dark tint area. Can't be seen from the outside. Good FYI in the FAQ section. I love the Cobra. I need to check my model number.

the Passport 8500 is also very good radar. That the and valentine 1 are pretty much the best radars you can buy. About the 360 degress notifications on the v1, its cool, but i really dont see the point of it. I mean your gonna slow down when it goes off anyways...the arrows in my opinion are just a gimmick.

don't make me smack you. and...don't knock it because you can't afford it! :want:

i'm kidding...well not about the smacking part. but i think the direction radar is sweet...and yeah that includes the arrows. it lets you know exactly where the threat is...and being on the freeway you can tell if it passes you by and it behind you or in front of you. sometimes you don't always see the cops but you can tell the general area they are in. sideways is decent, but the front and back are definitely a perk.

There is a stealth install on cadillacfaq.com, you hook it up where the map lights are. Just do a search for radar detector

All good detectors do not use batteries. The problem with cordless detectors is since they have limited power the range is not as good. Besides just the range you also will not have support for POP radar which is a super fast signal 1/15th of a second because the detectors cycle on and off every few milliseconds in order to save battery power. Best thing to do is hard wire your unit like most of us do and you wont have the cords in the way any more.

I love my V1.. Wouldnt trade it for the world... Saved me many times..

Another plus, its upgradeable... i am sending mine in for $50 and they are going to upgrade the hardware/firmware to support pop3 (if you buy new, you dont need to pay this extra amount).... We dont know what is around the corner, but they are saying it is always upgradable and they came through on this one...

Thats why the V-1 is worth it's price. How many other detectors do this upgrade when new dangers emerge (like the pop radar). As far as I know none. i have the Passport 7500, a great detector when I bought it, and it has kept me ticket free. However the pop radar is here where I live, and I have no defense for it. I will need to buy for that protection as my current unit is not upgradable. Paid $249 when new. See how the price suddenly doesn't look so bad.

The Escort 8500 x50, Beltronics RX65 & New Beltronics STi Driver are all upgradeable. Not knocking the V1 because I have one here that I use for testing and its a good unit but I drive with the RX65 because I like it better and it falses much less.

Hey Tomm, since u are here and the expert on the subject matter can you rank what you feel are the top radar detectors on the market based off price, reliability, effectiveness, options, all things considered. Thanks! Not looking to get a radar yet because CTS isnt fast enough, but i will deffinately archive this thread.

CTS is definately fast enough for a need for a Radar Detector.

In any case I am working on a completely new information website on Radar Detectors and once its done I will post it. It will discuss the best radar detectors and we will discuss around 12 different specific models.

Right now if the budget is unlimited these are the top 4 radar detectors.

1. Beltronics STi Driver $449.95 (The only completely invisable radar detector) a top choice for anyone driving a truck or a person who lives in the 2 states where radar detectors are illegal.

2. Beltronics RX65 $329.95 (My Favorite and the one that I use)

3. Escort 8500 x50 $299.95 - $339.95 (Red Version is $299.95 and Blue Version is $339.95 - Only difference is the color of the blue LED's)

4. Valentine 1 $399.00 (This unit is big and bulky but it has direction arrows which some users love)

I just want to take a minute to say thanks to tomm. He got me a great deal on a Bel RX65 and shipped the unit next day. He was a real pleasure to work with and he knows what he's talking about. If anyone is interested in a radar detector, contact tomm and he'll get the job done right.

The reason we have radar detectors is because we speed from time to time. Speeding is illegal. We cover our butts with radar detectors. So is a Jammer really a big deal..if they work? I use a Detector in VA and that's illegal.

Tomm, Do you have any input?

Yes, I know speeding is illegal, but it also doesn't include the hefty fines of having an illegal detector or jammer (most of the time). FYI, they have the technology in DC and VA to check for cars that have radar detectors

I make a lot of trips up & down I77 thru VA with my detector on. Never been stopped. You think that's hefty try street racing. Jail time, lose your license and in some states your car. It's amazing what we do for a RUSH!:D

We sell the same units for $20 less and we only sell them because there is a demand for them. I have personally tested this unit with a few of my radar guns in my collection and I got a reading everytime. My suggestion to anyone is to buy a radar detector with some range and there should never been a need for any type of jamming devices.

They use this technology in every state to check for radar detectors because radar detectors are illegal in commercial vehicles and trucks. True Jammers are easily detectable because every radar gun that I own lets you listen in to the frequency and you can hear if anything is being broadcasted to block the signal. The fines can range from $10,000+ for using active jammers that broadcast. If you are in a state where radar detectors are illegal you can buy a Beltronics STi Driver radar detector for $449.95. They are pricey but it is the only detector made that is completely invisable to all RDD's (Radar Detector Detectors.)

Bob - have you ever been busted for street racing? I have, and I'll agree its a pain in the butt. Had to get a lawyer (which ended up costing about four times as much as my actual fine), do community service... Let this be a lesson to you all, street racing's bad m'kay?

Tomm - whats the big draw for the Bel STi Driver, it's "invisibility" to radar detector detectors? Hows it compare to the other options in the >$300 category as far as range and reliability? I just picked up a Bel RX65 so I'm no longer in the market, but I keep hearing about the STi so I'm curious.

Bob - have you ever been busted for street racing?

Once but the cop felt sorry for me and gave me a speeding ticket. :)

Lucky you. Unfortunately I didnt get off so easily. My best friend and I were busted for a "speed contest" when we were both about 19. This happened to take place about a week before the first "Fast and the Furious" movie came out. Since we ended up being the first pair to go through the courts with this charge after the movie's release, the prosecutor decided to "make and example of us". We both had to get lawyers, and from then on were forbidden by our parents to go to the same place in separate cars.

Long story short, I ended up with 40 hours of community service, about $450 in fines, and 6 months unsupervised probation. Fortunately my lawyer was able to get me in the "differed judgement" program, which meant nothing would show up on my record as long as I behaved myself for the next 6 months.

Though it didnt seem like it at the time, my lawyer made sure I knew that I had gotten off very easily compared to what the prosecutor had been pushing for. Apparently my charges carried a maximum sentence of $2000 in fines, a 1 year license suspension, and 60 days in prison! The prosecutor never really tried for the prison time, but he definately wanted to take away our licenses until the very end. It wasnt until my lawyer actually brought in the police officers who originally stopped us, and they testified that if they'd known how aggressively the prosecutor would go after us they wouldnt have written our tickets, that he finally backed off.
