View Full Version : service loaners? gritter 05-12-06, 10:44 PM How old do you have to be at your dealership when you drop your car off to get a loaner car? Gotta call to set up a service appt for my car on monday. Figured id ask you guys what your local dealers policy is on loaners. I'm 19 and i heard you have to be 21 to get a loaner, if that's the case i'll have to make my dad drop the car off so i can get a damn loaner.. thanks guys.. i know i should wait till monday and just ask my service rep but oh well mebeg0d 05-12-06, 11:13 PM I am 20 years old and they gave me a loaner car with no problem. The loaner was given to me through enterprise, which is part of the dealership. Enterprise said you have to be 21, but I told them my insurance covers me for loaner cars, and that I pay extra for it(which isnt true... i don't pay extra and they DO cover me) This is all you need to know. If you're curious, I got the loaner in Virginia. If you have the rental insurance let them know, if not then offer to cover with their insurance. It should be no more then $11-$14 a day. If it's the dealer you bought the car from, then ask him to explain why it wasn't told to you before you purchased the car, that warranty issue's would not get you a rental while their being done, and why. My dealer gives out the loaner(usually a Cadi) if the service will take most of the day or more. I'm also still under warranty. dkozloski 05-13-06, 01:01 AM I'm 66 years old and the dealer won't give me a Razor scooter. I thought Enterprise wouldn't rent cars to people under 25 but maybe I just remember wrong. It sucks really.
I remember once I rented a car from Dollar, what a fight that was. I had renewed my driver's license and my plastic one had expired, at the time MO only gave you a paper copy to show that your old one was still valid. I traveled to CA to visit the Berkeley area (my wife was looking at schools).
She was 22 and I had this problem and I had to battle with the lady for an hour to get a rental car, they wouldn't rent to my wife because she was too young and my paperwork didn't seem to convince them even though it was from MODOT.
You might check Enterprise's website for information. All GM dealerships I know use Enterprise. I think they have a contract with GM. When my CTS was in for service, they arranged a Enterprise rental (Buick LaCross), picked my up at the dealer and since I was 100 miles away from selling dealer, the dealer delivered my car back to me and returned the rental. Age has to do with insurance rates which can be very high in some areas for under 25. In California the age is 25 too. gritter 05-13-06, 05:06 PM so to make a long story short... i'd be alot easier to have my dad bring it in... my dealer said i can get a loaner from them but they're 100 miles away from where i live now.. new closest dealer is 3 miles away and prolly wont like me to well because i purchased at a different location.. ChicagoCTS32 05-13-06, 08:54 PM Not sure about it being national law or state law or just a company policy, but here in IL when my gf rents a car from enterprise she gets the same rate as the 25+ age group because her family has rented so much from them. Normally there is a $5 age surcharge (read profit margin) for the 21-24 age group. *****s... gritter 05-16-06, 08:50 PM do u usually get charged when using the loaners? the dealer told me it was $30 a day for a loaner DDS rollin a CTS 05-16-06, 10:06 PM I'm 66 years old and the dealer won't give me a Razor scooter. My dealer provides free loaners only when doing waranty work or major service, but not for just basic service visits like oil changes. I get it through a counter in the dealership, but the cars come from an enterprise location down the street. They provide anything ranging from Kia's to Caddys and Hummers. The first time I was given a loaner the girl behind the counter said that it was Enterprises policy not to rent "luxury" cars to anyone under 25 but since she could see I already owned a caddy she could give me one as a loaner.
As for having your dad drop off your car, when you sign for a loaner you have to show your drivers license and thats the only person who can drive the car. If he signs for it but you get caught driving it (by getting a ticket, or worse yet by getting in a wreck) you'll both be in deep sh*t.
In general, the age issue is usually a company policy thing. I was looking for rental cars this weekend for a trip I'm going on this summer and found that every company that I came accross charges an "underage premium" for anyone under 25, usually around $25/day. It looked like most companies wont rent to anyone under 18 period. I would venture to guess this has to do with the maturity/driving record/insurance rates for these younger drivers. And before you get defensive, looking back at how I drove back then, I know I wouldnt rent a car to me when I was 18 or 19 either. gritter 05-16-06, 10:16 PM im 20 years old... i feel if im old enough to buy the car..have the credit to get financed for the car... i should be able to get a loaner when i bring my car in for warrenty work.. am i wrong for thinking this? Did you buy the car from them? If so, pitch a fit and tell them that they shouldn't sell cars to anyone under 21 if they can't provide the same service. Do a review on www.cadillacfaq.com (http://www.cadillacfaq.com) 's dealer registery and do one on this forum. Bummer. I feel for you, but you gotta look at it from thier perspective. First of all, drivers under 25 and especially those under 20 are statistically the group most likely to get in a traffic accident due to inexperience or wreckless driving. Second, very few people your age have the resources or maturity to buy something like a caddy themselves. Most of the time when you see a younger person driving a nice car its because their parents bought it for them, or their parents bought a new car and gave the kids their old one. Heck, I'm 24 and I still get the "oh did daddy buy that for you?" line every now and again. Unfortunately, unless you can talk your salesperson into pulling some strings for you, you're probably S.O.L. |
