View Full Version : Video of my 4.9 5spd in Action. Capt Fiero 05-09-06, 01:33 PM Here is Part 1. I will post Part 2 "The Ooops Factor" in a bit.
Well I have never had a chance to post up a decent video of my car. Well we had our annual Hells Gate run this last weekend. It is 300kms round trip through some of the most beautiful roads, canyon's lakes, you name it.
Well I was the lead car and on an open canyon road. A few fiero's behind me and open road in front of me. Lisa was in the passenger seat, and just happened to have a camera.
No shots of the speedo were taken, but the drive was done in 4th gear 5500 rpms, then into 5th to cruise, then downshifted to 4th to accelerate through a corner. I tried 3rd and it just ground. Not sure if it was too high of speed or the trans is going. In either case, the car was wide open until............................
Just watch the video and note the stuff that ends on the windshield at in the last 2 seconds of the video. New video clip will come later.

Basically the last ½ of P2 is just talking in the background. I filled coolant from the engine and had someone cap of the rad as soon as it started to come out. But the problem was you could hear the water begin to boil and hiss as it went in the engine. I had to stop and wait for the sizzle to go away. All in all it took 3 gallons and 3 burping sessions to get all the air out of the system Night Wolf 05-09-06, 03:53 PM Damn those are some sweet roads!.
Even in a Fiero with 3.5' of exhaust... the sound of a 4.9 is unmistakeable :).
So very cool! caddeville 05-09-06, 04:50 PM Yeah, our roads are pretty damn good. I just got an 80series flowmaster camaro muffler on my 87. I'll make a driving full throttle video. The #5519 edelbrock muffler doesn't exist anymore, so you can forget about that muffler Rick. That fiero is pretty sick bro, i wanna get one and make it into a sleeper, so when a mustang pulls up next to me, there will be a little surprise for him:stirpot:!!
My 4100 now does 0-60 in 9 seconds!!!! Capt Fiero 05-09-06, 05:06 PM Just a quick question, a 4.5 from late 80's converted to a carb setup. Is that a decent motor. What were the stock power numbers. We have the option to go and pick one up. The kicker is the motor was used in a fiero and is still bolted to the fiero cradle and transmission. It would be a plug and play swap for Lisa's Fiero. caddydaddy 05-09-06, 06:02 PM The 4.5 was just a smaller stroke 4.9 with a 155 HP with 9:1 compression in 1989 and 180 HP with 9.5:1 compression in 1990. So, find out exactly what year the engine is! CoupeDevilleRob 05-09-06, 07:22 PM The 4.5 is a good motor, basically a bigger, better 4100. I'd like to hear some details on that carbureter set up though. I'd love to know how it works. Night Wolf 05-09-06, 09:45 PM Yeah, our roads are pretty damn good. Just because Edelbrock dosn't make the 5519 dosn't mean I can't get it.
But, thats ok. One of these days I am going to call them up and see what model replaced the 5519. At Advance, we can order stuff right from Edelbrock, and I get my employee discount too, so it'll all work out.
I never liked Flow Masters, and I don't want one on the Caddy. Night Wolf 05-09-06, 09:47 PM The 4.5 was just a smaller stroke 4.9 with a 155 HP with 9:1 compression in 1989 and 180 HP with 9.5:1 compression in 1990. So, find out exactly what year the engine is!
He said it was swapped to carb.
For that engine a 450cfm carb would be good. When you start mixing and matching stuff like taking a FI engine and slapping a carb on it... noone will know how much power its making, take it to a dyno. Even then, there is no need to switch to a carb in the Fiero.... caddydaddy 05-09-06, 10:40 PM He said it was swapped to carb.
Yeah, but the compression ratio was different, so that's what probably affected the power the most. But who knows what the engine makes with a carb! Night Wolf 05-09-06, 11:46 PM no, he just said it was a 4.5 converted to carb.
It could be making anywhere from 130hp-200hp how you look at it, and depending on setup, though I would guesstimate it would be at, or slightly below the TBI ratings.... caddydaddy 05-10-06, 09:27 AM [QUOTE=Night Wolf]no, he just said it was a 4.5 converted to carb.

Yes, but my point was that the compression ratio was raised in 1990. So that can make a big difference in how much power the engine makes, carb OR TBI! So he should find out exactly what year the 4.5 is! caddeville 05-10-06, 05:09 PM Just because Edelbrock dosn't make the 5519 dosn't mean I can't get it.

That muffler is discontinued period. I already searched, and found **** all, but true, you might find something close to it. The 80 series sounds nice and raw. It should be louder on the 4.9 because of the roller cams and more valve lift. I'll make a video. Oh, and one off topic thing for your engine, PLEASE use the GM oil supplement!!! The best stuff i've ever used man, you will feel a bit more pull on acceleration!! Capt Fiero 05-10-06, 06:12 PM The conversion to carb is done for simplicity's sake. You don't have to fight with the caddy ECM to install the motor. You go old school distributor shaft that uses weights to change the ignition advance. Rip off the throttle body get an adapter plate and toss on a vacuum operated carb.
As for year, I am betting it is an 88 or 89 motor. When put in a Fiero with our shorter exhaust the caddy motor usually gain a bit or top end. There is more than enough torque to sacrifice some.
As for exhausts I couldn't be happier with mine. You could probably do the same setup on a caddy but your exhaust tip would exit in front of the front tire. Would be kinda weird to see a caddy with a Camaro exhaust tip coming from in front of the front wheel. As in the video it is not that loud either and gives a nice growl when asked to.
Thanks for the heads up on the 4.5 I will take pics when I go to look at it. However there are many write ups on the net on how to converter the 4.X motors to carb. The carb usually makes more power at WOT but sacrificing some drivablity at part throttle operation. I have had my fiero dynoed, 4.9 block and heads, 4.5 intake and a holley 500cfm 2bbl. Three pulls with the best HP being ~160 HP at the wheels. This is in a 88fiero and older 4sp auto. The pull was recorded in 3th gear and pulled to over 4000rpm but under 4500rpm. The car was running so bad due to wires that they couldn't get a torque reading. awadecki 08-19-06, 02:53 PM capt fiero--how fast were you going? i'm surprised with the fiero's small cooling system that you made it that far going WOT. what 5-speed transmission did you use? | |
