A couple weeks ago I bought a Dell pocket pc. Really slick little gadget, as long as I can steal wireless access from someone, I can do anything.

While I was surfing around looking for free software, I caught an ad for Skype. What's the big deal for Vonage and all this VOIP crap they're trying to charge you for?

Skype to Skype is FREE. Skype to an outside line is only .02 cents per minute in most places. I tried it the other day and the quality was much better than cellular.

Not that I have anyone a long distance away that I need to talk with, but it seems to me like everyone's going to hop on this bandwagon within a year or two. I do a lot of conference calls with customers, and I'm sure they're having to pay a fee every time they set one up.

Your thoughts?

Skype is a however, a proprietry system.

There are a lot of software packages available that will all happily talk to each other over IP, for free. You only pay to dial out to a real number.

However Skype do have a good network in place and are making it as easy as possible to use.

I have a Skype account, but I never use it...

I don't leave it up because I don't have anybody to talk to. :(

Skype announced today that they're allowing free calling to regular lines in US & Canada until the end of the year.

I tried it, it works. NO CHARGE!!!

I saw a Skype phone attachment at CompUSA. You plug your phone into this USB device that dials out through Skype. Imagine using your home cordless over IP for free.

yeah and skype can not be traced.

Skype is the service of choice if you want to prank people.

My friends and I used to do that with Dialpad.com, back when it was free. We called a Wal Mart and told them I was in the bike section and a bunch of bikes fell off the rack and landed on top of me. I faked cries of agony, then the lady on the line said "But I cant see you! Where are you sir?"
I said, "Oops called the wrong store" and hung up."

We don't have any special services on our home telephone. Just basic BellSouth with caller i.d. and call waiting. We never make long distance calls.

It went up to $56 last month. That's $672 a year.
