View Full Version : Looking for a K2500 Suburban, 1996-1999 only

Anyone come across a K2500 Suburban in the $6K range, 1996-1999, please let me know. Really prefer an LT/SLT model.

It looks like ours is history, we think they totalled it on frame damage, slight, but I guess they are erring on the safe side (gotta admit I appreciate that). Looking deeper at it, both front fenders at the firewall are shifted around 0.2in to the pass side. So we think there is a shift that isn't good and may be hard to fix. We'll get an offer on Monday from what they tell us.

We would go with a K1500 as a last resort, but we really want the larger K2500 brakes and larger rear end.

I am in 53114, Darien, Wisconsin, so we wanna keep it within 200 miles at the most unless the deal is killer, then we would travel a little farther.

Thanks!!
Tom

Hmm...well it's definately going to be higher mileage with that price limit. What was the odo reading on your current wrecked one?

Not that it really matters (as most of us FW people know)...

Here's a couple Cars.com quickies:

Also, from that list, one is here with pics:

It is sharp, well taken care of, guy isn't a car guy, just drove and took to a shop. Doesn't look molested at all. My wife really liked it. Silver with dark red interior. Needs tires, but I have them already mounted/balanced on same rims. Has factory installed Bilsteins too. Most options on it (no astro roof). Even block heater, heated leather seats, G80 locking posi and 3.73's, 4x4, autotrac (auto 4wd/4wd/2wd/4LO), both key fobs, both original keys. This guy bought in 1998 from original owner. He has a 2005 now and still likes the 98, says he should have never bought the 2005....

Looks like it might be a nice deal. Very clean, doesn't look abused or run into the ground. All GM floor mats there, even a protective mat in the way back. Some "valet" starting, so I guess remote start, but he has no idea, he doesn't have the remote starter if it has it. Setup for dual batteries too.

This one you talked about in the other thread sounds quite nice:thumbsup:

I drove a '98 1500 LS 4x4 that belonged to one of my customer's once (my detailing business) and liked it. Not as refined or as quick as either the '02 we had or the '04 we have now, but still felt very tough. That was a while ago though and even our '04 now seems old to me...but it'll be replaced with a new '08 or '09 most likely anyway :)

454 or diesel, then 350. The diesel I have my reservations on reliability due to injector pumps and some scary stories of crankshafts breaking for no reason.

454 for the main reason I can swap injectors and experiement with my home grown DOD. I can't experiement on the 350 with the goofy "spider" EFI.

Which engine is your preference: 350, 454, or 6.5TD?

That dealer Rosen isn't far from work at all. Maybe 15 min tops. I will have to go check it out. Thanks!!!! That is just the ticket too, 454 and all. I know, gas prices are out of sight and go for a BB. But, I can convert it to E85 with some work and run it to my hearts content on corn!

I'm a good 3 hrs away, I'm around 50 min north east of Rockford. If you can get some pictures, miles, VIN, phone and a price, I would greatly appreciate it. Send to my email, (no spaces) n h z l v (at) p e n s y s dot c o m. And of course the (at) is @.

For the right truck, I will drive....

I am not afraid of higher miles, but I don't want a truck that is beat to death or just worn the heck out. I looked a 3.42 geared (that is like 2.73's or 2.56's on a car) K1500 for $4400 Friday that had a trailer brake controller in it. You don't tow more than like 4000# with a 3.42 geared truck. If you need a brake controller, you were towing a lot.... Forget it. And it was beat, very worn and handled rough. If they offered it for $2000 I would have to think hard on it and see what I could part out just to make some $$!

Thanks Pack and CaddyCruiser!! The leads are big help!

I will stop down there tomorrow ,it is like 1/2 mile down the road .
It is in real good shape ,It has to be close to a 99, it may even be newer than that ? I will check .
Why in the world this guy stopped driving it to drive a 4 dr. Ford truck :thepan: ,Maybe it is a diesel and he wanted the mileage .
I will get back with you Tom.

We looked at the one from Rosen, actually I have it home for the night. Not too bad, good price ($4000 window sticker says $7K), stereo missing, ABS broke, dent on left rear, misses a little at idle, freaking LOUD exhaust, 454 that may have some mods. PDL lock, but don't unlock any door except the driver's door. Keys don't work in the rear door (lock frozen). Secondary electric pusher fan runs all the time. AC doesn't work.

It has great power. My wife was driving it and she was leaving me behind when I was driving the Quest. The Quest runs ok, but I had to step on it to keep up with her normal acceleration.

Not sure how mileage is yet, but it doesn't seem terrible, but not fantastic either (duh, it is a 454!). It has 3.73's and 265 75 16's. So rpms aren't too bad.

My wife doesn't like it, I actually do. With the 454 and the exhaust it really is almost fun to drive harder. Ride is nice, pretty quiet.

Does it have the rear barn doors or the tailgate and glass? Aside from the bar in the middle of the rearview mirror, I loved the barn doors on my '93 Sub. Loading and unloading is much easier than with a tailgate.

caddycruiser

That one sounds a bit beat, but not too bad...and pretty good for the price.

Power is there, definately, as are more heavy duty components, but that can also have it's downfalls--just depends on what you want it for.

But, would you rather have a very nice 1500 or a slightly ragged 2500?

The transfer case on the K2500 that is at Rosen has bad syncronizers, so that rules that one out. Bummer. But it runs good, 13-14 mpg so far, which in that driving is good, likely 15-16 highway if you keep speeds down.

It is a barn door, I like the barns too. On the tailgate I haven't figured out how to open the glass without unlatching it from inside at the dash, which is a big negative for my wife for sure.

On my dads 1995 Suburban Turbo Diesel, he has a button on the remote to pop the glass, and turning the key one direction or the other makes the glass open too.

Has the 6.5TD been worthy for reliability? I would love to have one.

This one had a key FOB, wonder if the rear button wasn't working. It didn't do anything when we pressed it 2x like my truck does.

This one had a key FOB, wonder if the rear button wasn't working. It didn't do anything when we pressed it 2x like my truck does.

Our remote has a third button centered under the lock and unlock buttons. We got it in 2000 with 60k miles, It ran great until 130k when two oil return lines blew and the engine lost oil pressure. My dad was on the highway and couldn't get to the shoulder fast enough to shut her down and the bottom end went bye bye. We had a new block/bottom end installed and it has run like new since then. Aside from the normal maintenance on an 11 year old truck - tires, breaks, batteries and battery cables, it has been rock solid. It does a solid 18mpg on the highway at crusing speeds and around 14-16 around town. Every so often we throw some diesel additive in the fuel and that helps keep the engine smoke in check. We don't need it nearly as often on the new block as the old. The only user error problem was when my dad got a little zealous and tried to shift into 4x4 on the fly, he chewed up the syncros in the transfer case pretty good, but we got that rebuilt and it's been fine. He's hauled a lot around with that thing and it still feels good on the road. If you come across one, I'd look at it, they are fun trucks.

Ok, will ponder that one. We found a nice one tonight. 1997 K2500 with, of all things, the L31 350 and 4.10's. Drives good, this is as close to a new one as I have ever seen. It is $5995 advertised and the underhood and interior look like someone liked to be able to eat off of it if needed. No amount of cleaning would get it looking that good. It is almost as clean as new. No evidence of a wreck.

Everything works but the AC, likely low on freon, I will force the compressor to be sure (short low pressure switch temp).

Same deal, almost every Burb I find has a small dent on the left rear. Go figure. Even this one has a very hard to see one, but my son caught it. Almost like someone bumped into it with something very soft, but hit the right spot.

We'll let you know. State Farm offered us $4400. Can't even think about getting another Burb for that, let alone cover tax/tag/title too (that is supposed to be covered). So they said to send them some listings. Most are in the $6-$8k range.

Any advice for dealing with them?

If you guys saw my pictures, I got the offer on the truck today.

I am going to keep it and sell. $1300 obo as is. (sorry, put the wrong price in the title)

1996 Suburban K1500 with 9.5" SF rear end from a 1994 K2500 (has only 115K on the rear now), new front and rear brakes, could use tires, but we can work something out, just ask, has L31 Vortec 350 and 4L60E in excellent running shape. Has AM/FM Cassette/CD, barn doors. Newer (lifetime warranty from Autozone) alternator and battery only 18-20 months old. Front shocks are newer, but I don't care for them. The rear shocks are only 10K miles old, new when the rear end went in back in November.

Truck has 233K miles and runs and drives excellent.

She runs and drives fine as is, just munched. The frame has some damage, but might be able to be fixed easily (they only said it needed 1hr frame straightening time) and I found a front clip same color for $1000 on car-part.com.

PM me. I'll post more pictures of the it if people are interested.

I finally got a chance to call, we deposited the insurance check today. Now, to get enough $$ to be able to make a decent offer. Things hinge on selling the existing Suburban. And still trying to get up some additional $$. It sounds like the nicest one I have seen yet, except for the seat that is torn. That is hopefully something repairable.

I hope this weekend or next we can get there to take a look if we can get up the $$.

Pack, did you notice if it was a barn door model or a tailgate model?

I take it the truck looks a lot like this one? http://www.tompeckford.com/pages/present/flm/notlocalized/searchinventory/vehicledetailsused.asp?orgid=1721&vin=1GNGK26R0VJ330918&photo=5

IMO, The one down here I like better than that one ,It is dark grey and just as clean as that one and its a GMC ,and the added benefit of the rat motor,I am sure this guy will take alot less ,with the fuel $ he has had no bites on it here :) And it is the swing out barn doors !
I would go snap a few pics ,but I am leaving in a few to go to a car show in PA.

If he would take less, we can do it pretty quickly, if not, we will have to wait. Still hinging on selling ours. Trying to get up enough so we can afford taxes/plates right away.

Glad it is dark grey, I am not so fond of the silver color.

Yes, we like the truck a lot, I tried to call him today but no answer. We are trying to make plans to get there to buy it. He hasn't sent picts of the interior yet, still would appreciate those and for someone to drive it and give a second opinion on how it drives and all things that work/don't work. Things like 4WD, hi/low trans, ABS, any check engine lights, AC, etc. Any noises/rattles/etc too.

Will he be around tomorrow?

Randy_W
05-27-06, 08:32 AM
He is off on Saturday, but I will see him this afternoon. The interior is good, not perfect, the drivers seat has some scuffs and surface cracks in the side boxing, nothing a good clean up and treatment with shoe cream wouldn't make acceptable. It runs great and all transfer case functions are normal, hi/lo both engage and work, I tried them when I was thinking about buying it. No SES light, no noises, in fact it's quieter than my '04 Tahoe Z71.

I believe it to be a very good buy, it's not perfect but for the money and being mechanically sound it's one hell of deal! In fact, after looking at it again, I might still buy it if you don't!:D

It seems like it, that is why we are serious enough to come so far (900+ miles). Most of our friends think we are nutty. But hey, it is a 3/4t and they don't grow on trees anymore. After that happened to my wife in the accident, I want a 3/4t, the bigger brakes being the key point.

Hope it went to a good home, it was a pretty nice one. The one that Randy pointed me to so far is a pretty nice one.

Just can't figure out who went mudding with it! There is mud packed WAAAY up in the frame, on the trans, on TOP of the rear end, etc. Even UNDER the intake resonator! Someone went and had fun and buried it deep....

So far we like the truck a lot. My wife has gained a lot of her road confidence back after the accident now, mainly due to the better 3/4t brakes. They REALLY make a difference.
