I was sitting on Indian River Blvd. in Virginia Beach (posted location for the locals). This is a 3 lane (each direction)surface street with a turn meadian and a 45mph speed limit. At about 2pm today traffic started to back up as it often does. Right and middle lanes stopped, but left lane still moving briskly.

I was sitting in the median waiting to make a left when I see a kid start running from my right across the lanes. As I said, right and middle lanes were stopped so no problem. As he makes for the "fast lane" he's shielded by a van. He enters the fast lane and I hear tires squealing. The kid tries to go back but it's too late. A Fiero clips his hip and left arm, he spins twice and drops to the ground on his knees and then his butt.

He ends up facing me and his face tells me he's injured badly. I immediately call 911 and after being placed on hold for 2 minutes (seemed like an eternity) I give them our location. Cop and paramedics were there within 3 minutes. Great response time! Kid obviously had a broken arm, likely broken hip and maybe some internal damage unknown. He never went into shock, thank God.

It always scares me on these 3 lane boulevards when 2 of the 3 lanes stop and one lane of drivers refuses. Kids, cars, whatever, you just never know what or whom is coming.

Hope the kid is OK. At least he's young, kids usually bounce back pretty quick, even from severe injuries. An accident like that might have killed an older person.

Sheesh, being hit by a car myself, I know that it's no picnic. I'm glad he didn't go into shock. And it's something you wont soon forget...

CDR - You're exactly right. An older person would've been done.

slk - All I have to do is shut my eyes and I can hear and see it. Never have I been that close to one. I've been in plenty of car accidents (never at fault btw), but I've never seen a person hit by a car. Literally 15 feet from me.

Things like this makes me think alot about how our sexy, fast, cool cars can in one instance take me, you or someone else out the picture if were not careful. Hope the kid's OK.

I have no recollection of getting hit, and I stayed conscious throughout. The people that saw it tell me they can't forget it to this day and I got hit in October 1996...

When I was 12 I was hit by a car, and I also don't remember it. I was crossing a road on a pelican crossing and the taxi went through the red light and hit me.

I put a pretty big dent in his hood and cracked the windshield, but I was alright, no major damage just some bruising on my lower body and a bump on the head (presumabely where it hit the windscreen).

CVP33 - The kid should be fine, it isn't an easy thing to see and it can be quite haunting.

I have never been hit by a car, not even close.
I had it drummed into me as a kid (my father was a cop) to always, always look both ways, to never assume the driver will stop because it's a red light and never try and judge a cars speed and think you can beat it.

I wish parents would educate their kids nowadays to the same level, istead they keep lowering speed limits around here and other stuff in case a kid does run out on you. That's not solving the fundamental problem it's just hopefully reducing the damage if the problem happens. Instead they just penalise the driver over here.

I was apparently hit by a motorcycle. The guy on the bike didn't get a scratch, I ended up with a chip on my kneecap, which eventually started chewing through a tendon. I was wasted at the time, I just remember waking up on the floorboard of a friends car and being like WTF is wrong with my knee and where are we.
