I was sitting on Indian River Blvd. in Virginia Beach (posted location for the locals). This is a 3 lane (each direction)surface street with a turn meadian and a 45mph speed limit. At about 2pm today traffic started to back up as it often does. Right and middle lanes stopped, but left lane still moving briskly.
I was sitting in the median waiting to make a left when I see a kid start running from my right across the lanes. As I said, right and middle lanes were stopped so no problem. As he makes for the "fast lane" he's shielded by a van. He enters the fast lane and I hear tires squealing. The kid tries to go back but it's too late. A Fiero clips his hip and left arm, he spins twice and drops to the ground on his knees and then his butt.
He ends up facing me and his face tells me he's injured badly. I immediately call 911 and after being placed on hold for 2 minutes (seemed like an eternity) I give them our location. Cop and paramedics were there within 3 minutes. Great response time! Kid obviously had a broken arm, likely broken hip and maybe some internal damage unknown. He never went into shock, thank God.
It always scares me on these 3 lane boulevards when 2 of the 3 lanes stop and one lane of drivers refuses. Kids, cars, whatever, you just never know what or whom is coming.
