So... Who does this to a perfectly good running Fleetwood???

(Answer... ME!!!)

ZZ3 Cam and new valvesprings. :) OH YEAH!!!! :D

Katshot
03-24-03, 08:59 AM
You gotta do SOMETHING to make that boat quicker ;)
Hope it works out for you Bill. The problem is that cam swaps quite often just move the powerband upwards, and that just screws up the best part of the "stock" LT1. The great lower rpm torque, which translates into better driveability. Let me know how the car acts when under light throttle and lugging 4th gear. I'll be interested to hear if the surge is better or worse.

toomanytoyz
03-24-03, 02:21 PM
Geez Kevin... Do you ever have anything positive to say??? ;)

The ZZ3 is actually supposed to be a bit better on the low end than the stock LT1 cam, a big reason of why I went with it. :)

I don't know how my 4th gear experiences will benefit you. Because I still have 2 more gears afterwards... And no converter. :p

Well... No. It's not in YET. But it will be in a couple weeks. I was going to put it in before I drove it with the new cam, but now I plan to get the PCM reflashed and drive it with the auto for a couple weeks. Taking it to the track next wednesday (Apr 2) to see what kind of numbers I can put down with the auto. :)

Oh, and thanks for the props on the car guys. But just know, mine is a bit nicer than Kevin's. ;)

Cuz I'll be able to do this: :burn:

:p

Katshot
03-26-03, 03:24 PM
The question is....will it be any faster ;)
BTW, Bill, why would you put a cam in your car that has BETTER low-end power if you intend to put a 6-speed manual in it? That seems counter-productive doesn't it?

I think Bill's trying to catch up to mine. Which shouldn't be to hard in the next couple weeks.

So when's the T56 going in anyway?

Katshot
03-28-03, 08:39 AM
Hell, he's got to catch up to mine first ;) As I recall, I still have him by a half second, and this spring I'll be tuning her up for the first time since I bought it so I'm hoping to see even lower 14's or MAYBE even a high 13.
It'll be awhile before either of us manages to catch up to yours though. Now if you disconnect that DAMN BOTTLE........;)

Scrapyard
03-28-03, 02:04 PM
The bottel's been dissconected for over a year. I sold all the go juice stuff or traded off by last October. All I got left is the Manifold, which had a lot of looky loos but no one would put up the cash for. So the 600hp estamite got knocked back down to 400hp. Times still suck ass with the 2.56 one wheeler though. The best time I had on a good nite with the car running half way decent was 14.7's off bottel. Never actually ran it at the track on bottel though. That was more for Saturday nights at the street races. You should see peoples faces when this big ass Caddy rolls up with a nasty rumble and N20 purging from the cowl. :D

Katshot
03-28-03, 03:56 PM
Best of 14.7's?
HA!!
Then it's BOTH of you that needs to catch up to me ;)
I always had you figured as the king of the hill, suddenly I'm feeling a lot better about my 14.5's :D

Yeah, the 3.73's and a posi help A LOT!!! On the bottel it's probablly a mid 13 sec car. I can only imagin what it would be like with the gears installed and it running right. I'd probablly need slicks... EVERYWHERE. The car has a hard time hooking now with 10 inch tires off the bottle. It spins through the 60' mark. That's with the front end dumped and like 60-90psi in the rear bags. I did another run with the front raised up and the same psi out back and pickup a couple tenth with a little less tire spin but not much. I don't know. There are thing it needs and My skill isn't exactly the greatest. It's a beast though. It's more fun to just take her out and cuase havok anyway. If it was still running right and I still street raced I'd probably make a lot of money with her. You guys can fight over bad ass of the FW comunity now. I'm selling the car anyway. My reign is over befor it ever really started.

03-29-03, 04:08 PM
Hey Guys,

Looks like we all need to catch ya, Kev. ;) You must have a wednesday afternoon car or something, cuz she don't run like she was built on a Monday morning or Friday afternoon! That's for sure.

I took it out for a ride today, and it feels really good. Less throttle input to get the car up to spped, and it feels more responsive. I haven't taken her above 3 grand yet though. I figure I'll laze through this tank and then have fun with the next one. :)

Oh, added bonus, I swapped over to new injectors, and it seems to have smoothed things out. The car doesn't smell like it's running rich anymore, so that's good! Hopefully that'll help out my mileage.

I'm hitting the track this wednesday, so hopefully I'll have some low 14's to brag about. :) I am also swapping to tri-y's instead of my quad 1's in the next couple weeks too. Oh, and the t56 goes in on the 12th. Can't wait!

Engine assembly lube.

I had purchased the thick, red, cam lube oil to smear it with, but I was outvoted on the day of the install. One of the guys had brought that lube to use. I know you don't need it for the roller cam, but it was easier to just use it. I did an oil change right away anyways...

Dude, you have NO IDEA how I'd LOVE to take you up on that!
After my accident in '94, my wife made me give up bikes and I had to sell all 8 that I had at the time. My pride and joy at the time being my worked Katana 1100. My best times were low 10's and I managed to get it to 167 once before running out of road and having to back out of it. Either way, yeah, I'd go at it with you if I could :(

kcnewell
04-12-03, 03:14 AM
Hey Kat....What do you think of 10:20's? We've got a street legal Sportster at the shop that does it.....It's a 1966 XLCH with lots of mods. The guy built it in his garage and rides it to the track!

Katshot
04-12-03, 07:04 AM
When I was in the Navy, one of my commanders had a Harley drag bike that did low 10's. It was a TOTALLY custom, hand-made frame bike. Granted he was like 6'6" and probably 250+ [ounds but, that was fast back in the late 70's.
If you've got a "street legal" Sportster pulling low 10's, I'd say it's fast by anybody's standards. What kind of mods? All engine? Turbo, juice, or what?

kcnewell
04-12-03, 10:55 AM
Lot's of head work...Stock displacement (1200 cc ) Naturally aspirated 12.5 to 1 compression, (100 octane race gas) Custom made exhaust system, I'm not sure what cams, Lightened by about 40 pounds from stock. The rider only weighs about 150 pounds. I rode the thing......It's a fun run!:D

Katshot
04-12-03, 05:09 PM
Awesome times from a fairly "stock" engine! Although cams could make a sizable difference. Should I suppose that with 12.5 to 1 compression, the bottom end has also been "massaged" as well? I wouldn't think anyone would up the compression like that and not strengthen the bottom end too. Either way, she's fast and I'm sure FUN ;)

kcnewell
04-13-03, 12:36 PM
She's both! To tell you the truth the bottom ends of these things are as strong as they need to be for high compression right from the factory. I've seen guys put up to 14 to 1 compression ratios in them with no mechanical issues other than the normal wear and tear that extreme high performance mods put on an engine.
Try finding fuel at the local Pump'n Puke for an engine with that kind of compression! They're primitive but they're strong....

Katshot
04-13-03, 06:05 PM
Fuel like that is NOT on every corner.

kcnewell
04-13-03, 10:03 PM
Yeah, I always tell my customers that want high compression to not go higher than 10.5 to one so they can run pump gas with no problems...You can get away with a little more if you're paying attention to the sound of the motor but I trust very few people to really listen to an engine.

Katshot
04-13-03, 10:22 PM

I run my compresion high (11.5 to 1) and then pay close attention to what I hear the engine doing..... I also use timing offset to get the exact timing on each cylinder indivdually.....The problem with a customer is he'll load a fat chick and a bunch of other stuff on it and start up a hill on a hot day and never hear the pinging until the thing seizes....Then of course it's somehow MY fault that he hasn't got two brain cells to rub together on a good day! Consequently, I don't EVER set a customer engine up as far out on the edge as I would my own!

Katshot
04-14-03, 11:44 AM
That "little" extra in the tune is what makes the difference on the street too. I can't tell you how many times I've been able to win a race because I kept my engines tuned right to the edge. When you compare that to what the "average" level of tune might be of any given engine at any given time, you're maintaining a clear "edge" over most everything out there.
Of course when you come up against someone that either has his engine just as meticulously tuned, or just "THAT" much more powerful than yours........
That's what they make nitrous for ;)

kcnewell
04-14-03, 12:04 PM
I don't know...I've never thought Nitrous was something I'd want to use. If you can't make it run, use Nitrous! I'm kind of a pureist when it comes to motor racing. I'll do all the mods and use the best fuel I can buy at the pump. But I.M.O. nitrous is a tool for people that can't find the horsepower any where else. I've beat a few guys that used nitrous on their bikes and that's a real embarrassment for them. I've been beaten by plenty of guys that used nitrous when they saw that they didn't have a chance any other way. I never feel bad when I lose a race to a "Nitrous Junkie" I just figure it's a crutch to be used by guys that can't figure out how to really make horsepower.

Katshot
04-14-03, 02:31 PM
I agree to a point.

In support of nitrous:

Nitrous is unquestionably the best "bang-for-the-buck" you can get. On top of that, you can install it on a "stock" car and not compromise the dependability or driveability of the car as is so often the case with engine mods. It also won't kill your gas mileage. It's only there when you want it and therefore not something you have to "put up with" in order to have a fast car.

The down-side of nitrous:

Anybody can do a nitrous kit install and therefore it proves nothing of the driver's abilities. Using it against another car without it is kind of a hollow victory. If used improperly, it will torch your engine.

Bottom Line:
In heads-up racing, it's an unfair advantage but there are times that you just HAVE TO beat that other guy and it gives you the ability to do that. My favorite thing about it is the way it promotes sleepers. Besides, just because you have it, doesn't mean you ALWAYS gotta use it.

elwesso
04-14-03, 05:41 PM
I am not a huge fan of Nitrous, but do agree that it is a good bang for the buck. But I would rather have a car that can NATURALLY go fast than having to spray a chemical in it. It just seems more honorable.

04-16-03, 07:40 PM
You all sound like a bunch of whiners. Fast is fast no matter HOW you do it. Nitrous is a mod like any other. It just happens to be fairly cheap, fairly easy, and virtually undetectable to you opponent.
I think what pisses some people off is that a guy can more than make up for literally thousands of dollars worth of mechanical drivetrain mods with just a push of a switch. I know some will say that it's a win without honor, but is it any different than the guy that's rich and just PAYS somebody else to mod his car for him, or the "rich kid" that daddy just bought a fast car for? Hell no.
Sure, I'll always respect the guy that built the car with his own talent and money but a win is a win boys.

elwesso
04-16-03, 09:44 PM
Very, very true. But still its a win with out honor.

Mad'lac
04-16-03, 11:10 PM
Define honor in racing. The only one that counts is the person who comes in first. Now if that person set up his engine as far as he can go NA and decided that he wanted some Nitrous to go faster so be it. If its allowed in the rule books then so be it. As for the street races there are no rules, run what you brung. I prefer to go the NA way until I reached the very limits of NA then I go look into some power adder and Nitrous is by far the best bang for the buck.

Elvis
04-17-03, 12:44 PM

I think that Cadillac should come out with a new car like the deville that is rwd and leave the old deville fwd. My opinion is that FWD is better anyways. Only 2 things bother me about FWD...torque steer and loss of traction off the line. Other than that, all is well in a FWD.

I'm going to assume that tubbing will be involved, because there is no way you are going to get any traction with the clearance we currently have.

Tubbing a FW slightly might be cool mod all it's own, for the traction and handling benefits.

If you go this route, better make sure you have some other car for everyday driving. With mods like that you can forget about reliability or driveability for that matter. But it will sure make a cool ass weekend terror machine

That depends on how wild the engine is really. Hell, maliboo still gets almost 6mpg with a 1147hp 500, caddycarlo seems to drive his supercharged 500 around... FI and proper parts will make it reliable enough.

2. cand do power slides with FWD

Hum, not necessarily true. I've seen people do amazing stuff with front wheel drive cars.

Donuts, nope, burnouts, boring, but some can do power slides with a front wheel drive car; pavement, dirt, snow, ice, name it, some can. It's just that it requires a different technique than RWD. Search me how they do it, I drive both and I can only do it with RWD.

Anybody can slide a car with the E-brake!

It's not that easy. I'm talking power slides, in curves, at high speed, with another car alongside you. Some road racers seem to have spare arms and legs, 'cause I have no idea how they can brake, clutch, gas, shift, turn and pull on the E-brake simultaneously (since the turns often take less than a second).

Some pretty amazing drivers out there. Shoot, even I can do 'powerslides' with my '91 Sentra, but I'm talking about intense racing conditions. If you've ever raced FWD cars, you know what I mean, it's even more intense on dry pavement.

I've driven bikes since what seems like forever, and my mind cannot understand a racer leaning to what seems like beyond 45deg, and he does a controlled power slide of his rear wheel. :bonkers: To me that is impossible, but bike racers do it every freaking turn.
