View Full Version : I think I scratched my nav screen! nickc50310 04-28-06, 08:34 AM SO last night I decided to clean my car. My nav screen was kind of dirty so I decided to clean it. I used a paper towel and windex. Now my screen has a bunch of little scratches all over it. Theyre not real obvious but you can see them in the glare or when the screen is off. ANy ideas of how to fix it or make it better? I was thinking some sort of polish maybe? TagApl4 04-28-06, 08:40 AM Anyone have tried and tested methods on the propper way to clean the DIC? RobertCTS 04-28-06, 08:53 AM Don't know the name but there is a product used to "remove" scratches from eye glasses. Actually it fills in the scratch with a clear film. That might work. "As seen on TV" ad. Anybody remember the name?
edit- Here it is:

Do not use this. This product does nothing. I fell for it and wasted my money.
I use a microfiber cloth to clean my screen (the kind that comes with sunglasses) and nothing else. The screen cover is very soft and scraches extremely easily. In fact, if your screen already has scratches on it, you can actually use the microfiber cloth as a polish and rub out the scratches. RobertCTS 04-28-06, 09:32 AM Do not use this. There you go..straight from the horses mouth. It's suprising the number of commercials that hawk junk that doesn't work:mad:
My heart was in the right place:) mikesharon 04-28-06, 10:05 AM Some of that scratch remover works but not on our NAV screen, there is another coat on of protecting layer on there so if you use it, it will make the screen WAY worse, trust me I went down this route.
But feer not my lad you can easily replace the screen itself if you wanna put some work in and you have a table saw. Just get some acrylic at home depot, its like 3 bucks for an 8 1/2 x 11. Just take the face plate off and unscrew all the screws leave it face down so the buttons dont come out. Pull the NAV screen out make a marking on the new one and cut accordingly. I have done this a couple times now and it really makes it look like you have a brand new nav. dkozloski 04-28-06, 10:53 AM To cut acrylic plastic, go to your builders supply store and get a plastic cutter. Glass and window shops also carry them. This is a very inexpensive tool that scores the plastic like a tile or glass cutter and is what we used to cut hundreds of aircraft windows without all the wastage and annoying sawdust. The tool I'm talking about has a folding blade like a jack knife. mikesharon 04-28-06, 10:57 AM Dkoz is right you can go that route aswell, but if you have a table saw already set up that works fine to. I went and bought a microfiber cloth at walgreens during lunch. No go on the polishing. WTF are these screens made of??? WAX??? WTF!! ARRRGGGGG!!! dkozloski 04-28-06, 04:13 PM Polish out your scratches with Lemon Pledge furniture polish and toilet paper. Keep the paper moist with the polish and work it around. Let it dry for a while and then do it some more. This works as well on helmet face shields as it does on multi-thousand dollar aircraft windshields. This an old Alaskan floatplane pilots trick. urbanski 04-28-06, 04:28 PM are your buttons flaking?
you get a new nav under warranty for flaking buttons
so that's a solution too :) SoCadillac 04-28-06, 04:44 PM Why hasn't someone come up with the screen protection film used on PDAs for the CTS NAV screen?
I am afraid that you have permanently scratched your screen as a paper towel is abrasive, and you should have used a 100% cotton cloth or better yet, one of the newer microfiber clothes to careful wipe your screen. Also, Windex is a huge no-no as it has ammonia in it and this does terrible things to plastics (mainly crazing over a time). In fact, Windex should be banned from every car enthusiast's garage. It destroys window tinting in your car too. AznPrydeRegalRyde 04-28-06, 06:33 PM Windex is a huge no-no as it has ammonia in it and this does terrible things to plastics (mainly crazing over a time). Not only is windex bad, but alot of of generic car care companies (eagle, turtle, etc) use ammonia in their window cleaners. Ammonia = non-giggity on tints SO last night I decided to clean my car. Did same mistake..used windex and paper towel..I only had a scratch in the middle, ended up with several scratches across the screen. I was surprised to see how easily I could scratch the screen then I realized it was only the anti reflective coating on the surface that's scratched ( same coating you can see on the lcd monitors ). The screen got so bad that I couldn't stand it anymore so after 30 minutes and enough paper towel and windex I removed the coating completely. Now it looks like new and scratch free..the bad thing is that reflects all the light..I can clearly see my rear windshield on it..and expecially on a sunny day driving with the sun in your rear it almost blinds you. Luckly we have ebay :

SO if I buy this I wont be able to see the scratches anymore yes?? SO if I buy this I wont be able to see the scratches anymore yes??
If you remove all the coating you won't have any scratches left to see..just use plenty of windex :)
The nav screen protector is good for reducing glare and I guess some protection too. nickc50310 05-02-06, 12:21 PM Polish out your scratches with Lemon Pledge furniture polish and toilet paper. So does this fix the anti-glare coating or just remove it ompletely? nickc50310 05-02-06, 12:22 PM are your buttons flaking?
