View Full Version : Hugger & Cats Have Arrived! RobertCTS 04-27-06, 07:51 AM A long time has passed since placing my order but the Huggers have finally arrived!
Many of you know that Pete of Cadillac MotorSports purchased the manufacturing rights and design from Lund Performance Cadillac. He bought the remaining inventory of headers and header parts. Pete offered the Forum a Group Buy price for the 3.6 VVT design. He also took names for a 3.2 design which to date has not been designed but the plan is in place.
I plan to install the Huggers/Hi-Flow Cats hopefully in 10 days. I'll post what the installation went like and how well they perform.
http://usera.imagecave.com/BobsWork/Lund.jpg odysseus 04-27-06, 08:03 AM Is the pic of the actual headers you received (they still say Lund on them). If so, I presume they're part of his buy from Lund and had them Jet Hot coated, etc., just like SDMarine's. Has Pete successfully 'cloned' a set for the 3.6L yet? That's very important for us lowly 3.2L guys, since no headers exist to take a pattern off of. Our engines are 11% smaller, so the tube diameter (and possibly lengths) will need to be different (~1/8" smaller), as well as the flange that mounts to the head.
Cloning 3.6L headers will be easy compared to developing them for the 3.2L from scratch. FSU_Noles 04-27-06, 08:07 AM You are gonna have to buy more dynamat and really need that upgraded stereo system
Have fun installing and watch those knuckles :rant2: RobertCTS 04-27-06, 08:35 AM Is the pic of the actual headers you received (they still say Lund on them). I think Pete bought like 6 completed headers and I'm not sure how many parts were in the inventory. He's connected to a lot of Cadillac dealers for selling his merchandise, so I'm not sure how many has already shipped.
These are installed from under the car so a lift is a must. The install takes a lot of time so I've elected for my Dealer to install the huggers.
Pete says the Huggers really don't make the exhaust any louder. I was concerned about that. I may have to Dynamat the fire wall. We'll see. See if you can get a dyno going on after installation :) RobertCTS 04-27-06, 09:25 AM Since the 3.6 & 2.8 are of same design, It seems logical that they would fit the 2.8? jteolis 04-27-06, 09:32 AM That header says "LUND" on it. See the first post. He is still using the Lund stock he bought. He has a lot of exhaust flanges with the Lund name on them. When that supply is used up I'm sure it's more than likely you'll see CMS name. mikesharon 04-27-06, 09:54 AM Those look sexy. RobertCTS 04-27-06, 10:01 AM You can't see it in this pic but CMS polishes the inside of the header and applies the Jet Hot coating. It's a smooth as a new baby's butt.:) those are the one manufactured by LUND.
so these are resales.
man if i bought flanges from lingenfelter and made headers out of them and sold them his legal department would be ALLLLLLL over me. RobertCTS 04-27-06, 10:44 AM those are the one manufactured by LUND.

All of that is explained in this thread Kael. CMS bought the Lund inventory, paid off Lund's debt to the Engineering Company that designed them. Lund no longer has any claims on these headers. Currently they are the only headers available for the Cadillac CTS 3.6. CMS them polishes the interior of the headers to a mirror finish and sends them out for the Hot Jet finish. I'm really pleased with what I see. Can't wait to get them on:bouncy: onephatguy 04-27-06, 10:55 AM They look good Rob. I'm trying to resist buying them. I am waiting for an automatic CTS-V, but the temptation to purchase these is hard to resist. If they don't end up making a CTS-V auto, then I may go with a BMW M6 conv. when it becomes available. Nope on the krautmobile. Thought about the GTO with the same engine and a hydromatic tranny? onephatguy 04-27-06, 11:04 AM Pontiac's don't do it for me. If it were me I'd let the order stand for a while longer. I'm sure you would have no trouble selling them. pjohnesq 04-27-06, 12:06 PM those are the one manufactured by LUND.

Not necessarily. It all depends on what's in the purchase/sale contract. For example, right now if I install those headers and there is a manufacturing defect, although the name Lund is on it,I bet you if I sue Lund they would tell me to go screw myself and sue CMS...so it all depends on what CMS and Lund agreed to in their contract pjohnesq 04-27-06, 12:10 PM A long time has passed since placing my order but the Huggers have finally arrived!
Congrats. I wonder when CMS will be taking payment for the remainder of the balance due. And if they do come out for the 3.2L would it be around same number of increase performance, or a little less since the difference between 3.2L and 3.6L?

Kali,
Headers attach directly to the exhaust ports on your engine. Next in line are your catalitic converts(CATS). Next is you V Exhaust. Thats the entire exhaust. You want everything to be as smooth as possible to scavenge the gases as quickly as possible. Headers are a way of doing this. I'm guessing I'll bump my 255HP +CAI= 280HP RobertCTS 04-28-06, 05:54 AM i think robert should hold the huggers in his hand and take a picture of himself with a big smile on his face...then post it...

I looked into the Cats to see. I'm sure you know what corrugated cardboard looks like. It is a really fine corrugated material wrapped into a spiral and running the length of the CAT. Make any sense? kali_cts03 04-28-06, 07:06 AM Kali,

So how much would something like that be for the 3.2L CTS if they become available, would it be along the same price line as for the 3.6L? RobertCTS 04-28-06, 07:15 AM Wow, that's cool Robert!!!

I have no idea Kali but I imagine it would be inline with the 3.6 version, $1700. I imagine the install would be about 5hrsx$80= $400. Pete thinks this is a tough install and should be done by a licensed mechanic. I wouldn't be surprised if Ody did his own.
Expensive but where else can you get that kinda power for these Cadi engines? collapsed 04-28-06, 08:09 AM Hey Robert, How good is the Macro lens on your camera? Can you take a picture of the inside of the cats?

Yes, I have a macro lens but the real problem will be lighting. The camera blocks most incoming light. I have to think about that. I have a camera tripod. That might help.:hmm: The corrugated material is a dark grey. So the contrast ratio of chrome and dark grey might present some problems. jteolis 04-28-06, 10:16 AM Yes, I have a macro lens but the real problem will be lighting. Flashlight? Shoplight? Sunlight? RobertCTS 04-28-06, 11:24 AM Flashlight? Shoplight? Sunlight?
Fiber optics would be cool. The light source has to illuminate the inside of the cat. You have to have the Camera directly infront of the opening at a fairly close range. Any light behind me or the camera will cast shadows. Maybe I can play with some bounce lighting. A flash may be to intense. Industrial photograhy was part of my job for 24 years at AT&T. I could dig out my film camera and do some long exposures but that's a bit much for this cause. RobertCTS 04-28-06, 01:59 PM I agree! Put the conspiracy to rest. Well, at least we've come up with three scenarios:

You might wanna start bugging Glenn, his shop Forman. Rather than bug Pete. Glenn seldom answers e-mail but my bugging him seemed to help. Devil_concours 05-01-06, 09:09 AM can you post a close up pics of the header?

Silly boy..they are from Lund's inventory. Nothing to compare them to. The welds are beautiful. The welds inside are polished, chromed and Jet-Hot coatings. I will do some more pics as I get the time. Devil_concours 05-01-06, 09:20 AM Silly boy..they are from Lund's inventory. Nothing to compare them to. The welds are beautiful. The work is done underneath on a car lift. Probably 5 hours at $80= $400 to install. Huggers are $1700. mikesharon 05-01-06, 12:01 PM Thats only one header by the way where is the other one? You musta missed my post earlier. That's my wife. She recently broke her leg in 3 places. 3 months in a wheel chair. You really don't wanna see my face:eek: mikesharon 05-01-06, 12:19 PM Gah sorry to hear that about your wife.....she wasnt talking smack about the CTS right before the "accident" I hope. RobertCTS 05-02-06, 11:32 AM Just got back from the service Dept at my Caddy Dealership. They estimate 6 hours for the install just like CMS said. 6x $70= $420. Scheduled to go in this coming Monday. The 3.6 DOC VVT Engine is very wide. Access is only from the bottom while on a lift. The job takes a pro 6 hours with his arms over his head. Not my idea of DIY. SoCadillac 05-02-06, 01:01 PM DIY dude

I too would install them myself, but freely admit that they would be a major PITA and knuckle busters. RobertCTS 05-02-06, 01:23 PM I too would install them myself, but freely admit that they would be a major PITA and knuckle busters.
I took Pete for his word when he suggested only a trained professional install them. Some special tools are needed for the awkward angles. I was also hoping my bonding with my tech and Service manager will help down the road when some unrealted part break they won't try to blame the Huggers. CadiKing2006 05-06-06, 03:01 AM hey, so did you get them installed yet?
I can't wait for the 3.2L headers

I believe Robert is going in this Monday to get it installed....
Yeah, it would be cool to have them for our 3.2L CTS, but it's kind of pricy so it just saves me from going under.... RobertCTS 05-06-06, 08:13 AM Yep, Monday. It's a 6 1/2 hour install. If they get started first thing I'll get it back the same day. If not, you know how that goes, it'll be Tuesday. I'm really anxious to get it back and drive it. I'll be stalking the Ricer Boys.:bouncy: I'll get you little ricer decals to display on your door for all the kills you claim!:blasted: collapsed 05-07-06, 03:49 PM Do they have a DYNO where you are getting the work done, or will youhave to schedule that somewhere else? I know this probably will not make you any more at easy about your car still being without the headers, but my car is going in to the dealership once again today for warranty crap!!! Hope this time it won't take them more then 2 weeks.... :alchi: Robert, just keep think of the coming road kills! :devilheh: yeah, think of the road kills and the probable increase in gas mileage.
for those that dont know, an enigne is basically an air pump, the headers let this pump breath easier hence upping efficiency.
i am interested in a few things.
robert, are they jethot (ceramic metal) coated on the insides as well? I cant remember yes or no. I wonder since I am worried about the close coupling of our cats to the headers. its a cadillac specific design that allows them to het up faster.
hmm. coem to think of it, with a thermal coating the headers are going to be transfering heat to the cats much faster, this will probablylower your cold start emissions by a couple of percent, so you can feel better about the environment.
the heat coating will also keep the underhood temps down, allowing the engine to run a bit cooler.
have you ever driven around and then popped the hood and felt the air intake? its hot as hell. I want to put a thermal barrier around that. no sense in heating the air charge and the throttle body if one does not have to.
if you could, do a test without a cross over, I have a theory on why sd marine saw good gains with the x pipe. I was takling to some gm people and was being told how the stock headers are specially designed for length and to time the exhaust pulses for best efficiency and power. since we have DOHC engines , back pressure becomes more important. These new headers open up and change the exhaust flow, maybe causing some turbulence or other unforseen issue that the cross oevr helps with. I could see the collison that is going on at a X pipe giving some better backpressue at low speed then allowing for faster out gasing at higher speeds.
gee, can anyone tell i had too much caffeine this morning?

Kael,
The Huggers are Jet-Hot coated inside and out. The Cats are the best money can buy. These Bosanni Cats are about $700 each and are also Jet-Hot coated.:) |
