And we've got 985 cubic inches here in 9 cylinders producing 450hp :).... .and to think its the little guy :)

Well, on our Beech 18, #2 engine was removed and put on the work bench and tear down started. Pratt & Whitney R-985 Wasp Jr. This plane had a water "landing" wasn't really a landing... durring a high-speed taxi run, the brakes faile dand plane went into Tampa Bay.... it was donated to out school. After 3 months or so the salt water really did a number on everything. Most all stuff is frozen up and inside the engines aren't too pretty, but, we are going to get them both running.... $1 they got to turn over by hand, #2 was stuck, so #2 gets torn down first.... most everything is going to be cleaned and reused... the bottom end.... err.... middle? is not going to be torn down if it dosn't need to be.... in fact when I asked... they may even re use the piston rings, just clean them up and stuff! Ah well... its a flight school (mechanic) plane... atleast they'll be running....

Here is the beast before hand...

Pics kinda suck, they are with my cell phone... but its still pretty cool. I'd like to get some time working on this thing if possible, right now the instructors are getting to have all the fun... but, when this is done, there is always #2....

some nasty oil was coming out of it... they said the guy changed the oil after it was flooded, but it was still full of water and really nasty looking...

The pistons are big... put your hand out, spread your fingers, and thats about the size of one piston.... think about it.... nearly twice the displacement of a Caddy 500, and only 1 more cylinder.... thats alotta bore and stroke :). To make 450hp at around 2,600RPM too... thats alot of sheer torque. There is no gear reduction either, so the prop is driven 1:1.

unmolested side (top of engine)..... lol, huge chain hoist around an I-beam holding the hanger roof up is what supported the beast while they got a work bench under it.

I think if I bore the 4.9 out a bit these will fit right in.... maybe bump the compression up a bit? :)

These are the Wasp Junior. Lindbergs plane had a Wasp (IIRC.... one of those record setting planes did) and the DC-3 had twin Wasps churring out 1,200hp from 1,800CID.... each...... oh sweet reciprocating glory....

Radials are just so cool.... to someone that really likes their IC engines.... they are just very interesting.....

Radials are cool. Although it's not a radial I've always wondered if an Allison 1710ci V12 would fit in my 75 Deville...
