Sandy's outstanding series of car sales tales have inspired me, even though I spent all my time 'out back' in service. Some really great memories started there. Here's the first.

It's 1978, and I'm an apprentice wrench bender at an AMC/Jeep/VW dealer. To prove myself, I have to spend my first six months renovating used cars to make them saleable. We did all the nasty tricks in the book to get some of these ratty beasts a few hundred miles down the road before they fell apart. I'm not proud of a lot of it, but that was the nature of the biz then.

Less than a month after I started, the dealership owner (a young Italian guy, very G.Q.) comes back to ask me a favor. His wife is stuck without wheels in a town about 45 miles away, and he's delivering several new cars that afternoon. Can I go pick her up? Of course I couldn't refuse, so we head out to the lot to find something for me to drive.

He looks around briefly, then out of impatience he just reaches into his pocket and tosses me his keys - to a gorgeous bronze Porsche 911 Carrera Turbo! I don't wait for him to change his mind and in a few seconds, I'm rolling north. This car is so sweet - smooth and blistering fast. I crank back the sunroof (yes, a hand crank) and before I know it, the Carrera is sizzling down the freeway at 80+. I think I'm in heaven.

Then I arrived to pick up Mr. GQ's wife. She's probably 30, and supermodel stunning. She's spent the weekend on a friend's houseboat, and sad misfortune - has gotten a nasty sunburn which requires her to wear a white tank top with nothing underneath, and very short terrycloth shorts.

So here I am - 19 years old, driving a 1976 Porshe Turbo on a sunny summer day with a drop dead gorgeous chick wearing hardly anything. You think cel phones cause distracted driving??? I don't think the Porche went over 40 all the way home - who's in a hurry? Not ME!

I know this sounds like a setup to a Penthouse Forum letter, but it was nothing of the kind. I was a total gentleman, and she had no interest in a long haired zit faced wrench bender with grease under his fingernails. Dammit.

But it was still two hours from almost thirty years ago that I'll never forget.

Oh 'ya... "THE BACK" > The back is its own kinda heII hole in its own right.
Is that dealership still functioning under the same owner ? Is it a chain-store?

After AMC was absorbed by Chrysler, Mr GQ lost 2/3rds of his car lines, so he gave up and sold the dealership to the Chrysler dealer next door. They now use it as a used car lot.

Oh. 'Ya, I miss AMC. They made some very decent cars, and offerred a 4th choice in the marketplace.

I can finish the story in a VERY dirty manner.

I'll do so later.

quite the contrary, I love Porsches of any color. I was thinking more in lines of tapping the boss's wifes ass. That would have made the story more memorable.
