View Full Version : Motor Is Racing at Idle

What in the world would make my motor race to as much as 3000 RPMs at idle? (normal idle is about 800 RPMs) This is not a constant problem, but it happens often enough to demand immediate attention. It does seem to be less of a problem once the car has warmed up, or later in the day. Any help from those northstar gurus in the know would be greatly appreciated. (forget suggesting cleaning the throttle body because I already cleaned it and it did not improve this condition) :burn:

vacuum leak.... it could also be a sticky TB but I doubt it because that car is only 6 years old.

Also check the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve.

Thanks Ranger buddy! The IAC was full of crud (carbon build-up) and I am now idleing at just under 1000 RPMs and so far very steady. Very easy to perform procedure. I even left the old O-Ring in there after lubing it a little. It appeared very supple and had no visible degradation. Thank you again for the diagnosis Doc!

Always like a success story. Thanks for the feed back.
