I just pick up a 96 deville and have a number of (simple) questions

1) The remote control does not seem to operate the doors/trunk/fuel door - I checked the battery and it's OK. Is there something that needs to be done to syncronize the remote with the door?

2) The car runs at about 200 - 215 degrees. Is that normal? My previous car was a 98 LeSabre which never got above 195

3) The car has 75,000 on it. I was thinking of getting a bumper to bumper or a powertrain warranty - any suggestions?

4) How does one check the error codes stored in the computer? I think it's the "OFF" button and something else.

5) Any suggestion for a better radio (currently has am/fm cassette) - Does any specific brand works better with the rest of the caddy system?

6) Should I switch form the regular 15 inch wheels to a more modern 17 inch?

Thank you,

Vlad

If the '96 has the Northstar (I forget when the Deville got it), 200 - 215 is normal.

Extended warranty is a gamble and very personal. It depends on how much work you do yourself. I never buy one and have always come out ahead, but I do almost all of my own work. Remember, with an extended warranty, you are paying in advance for repairs you may or may not need. Also remember, they don't make money paying for repairs, so read the fine print closely.

Enter the diagnostics via the OFF & WARMER buttons. There are several threads that explain it in greater detail. Just briefly, once in the diagnostics HI FAN = yes & LOW FAN = no.

Extended warranty is like insurance really. We have health insurance for us and our family. We may not use it. We have life insurance and hope we don't use it very soon. Extended warranty is like that. I bought a 99 Deville in January, 51,000 miles in sweet condition. I paid $1210 for extended warranty. In March the Dealer replaced the head gaskets causing coolant loss and over heating. The invoice was $2700. So it worked out for me. And I still have the 36 Month/36,000 mile warranty. Spending $1210 on the warranty was less risky than gambling the same amount in Las Vegas.

Edit, Unlike Ranger, I dislike working on cars. I do what I can to fix my cars and save some money, but my hobby is woodworking not cars. IF I were a skilled mechanic like Ranger and others in the forum, I most like would NOT have purchased the warranty. Of the $2700 repair on my Deville, $2400 was labor.
