Hello, I just inherited a 81 Sdv, with the 4.1 V6 in it. It's Silver with Red Velvet, and a red Vinyl Roof. Not a lot of options, but It's been in the family for years, and It has developed a blown head gasket. I have worked on caddys and other cars for a while, but I do not know anything about this engine. My service manual says that you have to lift the engine to get the Left Cyl. Head Off. Has anyone tried it, or does anyone know?

I have an '82 that started life with the same engine. I can't see any reason why the engine would have to be lifted. You could try to remove the head and see how it goes. Lifting the engine can be done by removing one motor mount bolt and placing a floor jack under the oil pan with a piece of wood in between. The engine gets jacked up an inch or 2 on one side. That would give a little more room. Service manuals can be way off.

Thanks for the info. It turned out that the head is ok for now, just needed a new radiator and a little StopLeak.
