View Full Version : New Car Possibility mccombie_5 04-03-06, 03:51 PM Well, I was looking on Auto Trader website at college today (yeah yeah I shudda been working) and I found this within 1 MILE of my house:
1992 VOLKSWAGEN POLO 1.05 Fox 3dr Hatchback,
34,000 miles, K Reg, 1 pevious owner, original miles, 8 month MOT and 4 month tax, CD/radio, 4 speed, some sevice history and reciepts, some rust to rear wheel arches hence price, solid little car and 100% reliable. £250. ONO

£250 is about $430.
I have £200 which is about $340. I think I should get it for that.
I spoke to Grandad (auto mechanic) on the phone earlier, and he's going to come with me on Wednesday to look at it after I telephone the seller tomorrow and ask them about it.
Its very low mileage, and it looks alright. Grandad will me able to tell me if its sweet or not, hopefully it is.
I wasnt looking for one of these, and its pretty basic, but its cheap to insure and its too good an offer to pass up.
4 Speed Manual
40bhp
Should be a barrel of laughs, but its a VW and it wont break, so its the best I can do. TeagueJT81 04-03-06, 03:55 PM Seems like a great deal if it runs well. It sounds like it gets great gas mileage and VW makes sturdy cars. Isn't the Polo the model they had the commercial with the suicide bomber for? mccombie_5 04-03-06, 03:57 PM I dont rememeber ever seeing a Polo advert, I didnt even know they sold them in America.
It should get 40-45mpg, which is just what I need. Two gallons of petrol a week will get me to and fro college :D
It's a 1.05 litre engine, which is feeble, but at the end of the day you said yourself its going to be sturdy, and witho nly 32k on the clock, its got another 170,000 miles left in it :D Eric Kahn 04-03-06, 04:11 PM They never sold Polo's in the USA, smallest VW we got was the Golf which they called a Rabbit back then, and they came with a 1.6 liter engine mccombie_5 04-03-06, 04:14 PM They never sold Polo's in the USA, smallest VW we got was the Golf which they called a Rabbit back then, and they came with a 1.6 liter engine
The smallest engined Golf the make is a 1.4 at present, and has been for a while so you guys missed out on the base model.
The Golf is a medium sized car here so its small for American tastes, and the Polo would just be a dot. The suicide bomber ad was a parody. :) slk230mb 04-03-06, 08:17 PM That's little. mccombie_5 04-03-06, 08:41 PM It's tiny, but its cheap and reliable (1992 VW - NEVER die) and It's a reasonable looker.
Sort of like a Sport Hearse. I~LUV~Caddys8792 04-03-06, 09:22 PM I'm in awe that someone actually makes a car with 40hp! mccombie_5 04-03-06, 09:35 PM I'm in awe that someone actually makes a car with 40hp!
They havent made it for eight years in fairness :p
It may be slow and looking like a Sport Hearse but at least its sturdy. slk230mb 04-04-06, 12:00 AM My truck has more horsepower per cylinder than that whole engine. :histeric: DopeStar 156 04-04-06, 02:03 AM Sort of like a Sport Hearse.
No..........no it's not....

LOL
I want it Jonas McFeely 04-04-06, 05:51 AM Buy it and drop the 1.8T in it.That thing would be nuts. mccombie_5 04-04-06, 11:24 AM Buy it and drop the 1.8T in it.That thing would be nuts.
I wouldnt be able to legally insure that though, otherwise I would!
It's since been sold, but I'm keeping my eyes open for another. slk230mb 04-04-06, 12:00 PM USes more gas per cylinder too :p
But it's oh so worth the price of gas. mccombie_5 04-04-06, 12:35 PM But it's oh so worth the price of gas.
I wouldnt be able to pay it here...
I liek the idea of a Land Rover Defender when I graduate university, I'll jsut have to get a Diesel though. Jonas McFeely 04-04-06, 01:42 PM I wouldnt be able to legally insure that though, otherwise I would!

Jeeze, you guys have some weird laws over there. mccombie_5 04-05-06, 12:35 PM Jeeze, you guys have some weird laws over there.
Well, I could insure it, but I'd have to declare it, and a 1.8 engine is waaaay too big for me to afford for a first car. I'm already looking at nearly or more than $3000 for my first car insurance.
It works differently to you guys, thats why young people can afford to insrue Cadillacs etc. davesdeville 04-05-06, 01:02 PM you guys missed out on the base model.
Oh damn, that's disappointing :histeric:
That car reminds me of my old Omni. Only the Omni at least had 96hp and torque in the 120s IIRC out of a 2.2L. It'd burn the tires through third. Kinda miss that thing.
I feel bad for you Brits and your crazy insurance stuff. I think I'd go on a shooting rampage if the insurance companies charged me $3 grand to insure a 40hp $400 car like that. Oh wait you guys can't even go on a good old fashioned shooting rampage either. :thepan: mccombie_5 04-05-06, 05:29 PM Oh damn, that's disappointing :histeric:

Indeed, its stupid, they wont even insure me for a Volvo 740 on my dad's policy...
Now what if I couldnt afford my own car, and would have to use the family car and share with my dad? I wouldnt be able to do it if our family car was a Volvo.
For the insurance on our 7 YEAR OLD, BASE MODEL, 1.8 LITRE Vectra it would be approximately $12,000 for me. | |
