I am the new proud owner of a 1972 Caddy Sedan Deville. It has the 472 Torque Monster in it. I also have a 1969 Sedan Deville (unfortunately my friend put it in the Demo Derby- a sin on this site) but I have it's strong running 472 and trans as well. I picked up this solid '72 for $500 because it has a slight miss when you initially hit the gas. He told me it has a burnt valve?? Does that sound correct? I also read on this site that the '79 has better heads on it so I was thinking of taking the two moters and making one crazy mean Caddy out of it. Any advise would be appreciated!!! What is the best way to make this engine scream and to maximize its power without dropping a ton of cash?? I am still is college, but want to run with the big dogs!!

The '79 425 heads have smaller intake and exhaust ports. Your best bet would be to find out what is wrong with your heads, if there is a problem, and either fix them, or get another set of correct cc 472 heads.
A cam upgrade can make the engine scream like you want! As well as an intake, some headers, the list goes on!

I meant to say that someone on the site said the '69 472 heads are better than the '72 472 heads. Is that correct?? I was told the 1972 472 has a burnt valve. Should I rebuild those heads or should i yank the heads off the 1969 472 that I have? The person said something about a size difference (mm) of the heads on the '69 and '72 472CID motor??

Thanks for the build up advice!!

1972 was a very good year for Cadillac, one of my favorites of the HUGE years.

The 68-73 BBCads all had 76cc (combustion chamber volume in cubic centimeters) heads, which are all similar enough to where I wouldn't call one better than the other. If the head casting numbers end in '250, '902, or '950 they're 76cc heads. The 950s don't have the smog rail, that's the only real difference between the heads. If I were you I'd try troubleshooting the miss through ignition and carb adjustments making sure everything's right there before you get into anything else. If the 72 has a burnt valve, it would be possible to use the 69 head(s) on it. While they're off you could port them a bit if you have the tools - you already have an extra set if you hit a water jacket.
